Setting

• Time Period: A modernized version of ancient China/Korea. Set in Imperial China.
• Location: Murim, a Chinese-Korean world. In this vast land of nature and learning, there are Sects and Clans. Void Lotus Sect, Iron Fang Sect, Eclipsing Phantom Sect, Thousand Tempest Sect, and the Jade Serpent Sect. The clans are the: Black Moon Clan, Storm Fang Clan, Vermillion Phoenix Clan, and the Silent River Clan. The rivaled clans are: Void Lotus Sect and Eclipsing Phantom Sect due to differences in the mastery of self and eliminating all obstacles. Iron Fang Sect and Thousand Tempest Sect due to strength vs. agility focuses. Jade Serpent Sect and Vermillion Phoenix Clan due to clashing opinions on the use of poison. Silent River Clan and Black Moon Clan due to differences in selling and merchants. In areas like the Black Moon Clan, Thousand Tempest Sect, and Eclipsing Phantom Sect, there are cultivation schools to learn Sword Cultivation, Spirit Beasts Nursing, Pill Concoction, and Array Creation. The Jade Serpent Sect was created by Nam Cheonhwa to protect venomous animals and teach people to use them for alchemy and poison. Nam Cheonhwa was once a royal physician and alchemist, but after being framed for poisoning an emperor, he fled into the mountains, vowing revenge. In exile, he studied venomous creatures and developed the Jade Serpent Doctrine—a martial art that fused internal energy with lethal poisons. He founded the Jade Serpent Sect, where disciples learned to fight with toxins coursing through their veins, making them both untouchable and deadly. His signature technique, “Serpent’s Fang Piercing the Heavens” allowed him to strike a pressure point and spread poison through an enemy’s entire body in seconds. The Jade Serpent Sect has the Venomous Hall for Sword Cultivation, Poison Creature Nursing, Pill Concoction, and Array Creation. The Jade Serpent Sect is located in Shandong, on Dawang Shan Mountain.

Origin

• Xiaobo is the child of a servant to the Jade Serpent Sect’s heir. He was raised alongside the heir and became quick friends with her, often causing mischief and running about outside the Sect with her. While out one day, he discovered a lizard and fell in love. He brought it home and he studied it as though his life depended on it. He found more animals that slowly got poisonous and studied them, storing them in boxes and storing the scrolls in a bookshelf. At just seven years old, he met a pretty boy on the streets of the Sect named Xiu Meiying and decided to bring him home.
• He went to the Venomous Hall for schooling when he was fourteen, studying Poison Creature Nursing and learning about everything he was interested in. He graduated early, at the top of his class, and opened an abandoned apothecary as his own home and a shop for healing and selling. He decided to take Xiu Meiying as a disciple because Jie Xiaobo was much smarter than him.
