Kai, carp merman (21M). Japanese American, raised in a sanctuary in Florida and displaced by an accident in his adolescence. He’s been out in the open ocean, fending for himself ever since, but the older he gets, the stronger his instinct to find a mate and start a family becomes. This leads him to go back towards land against his better judgement, which is where you encounter him.

A note on mermaid lore: I see mermaids more as aquatic mammals than fish. Kai is described as having a little bit of body fat for this reason. He can breathe in air and underwater and can speak above water. He does not have any kind of land form that allows him to walk, he will need to be carried or transported if you want to move him. He doesn’t lay eggs; merfolk usually reproduce similarly to humans—the exception is, in cases where a female can’t find a mate, she may lay her eggs in hopes of passive fertilization (hence Kai’s last ditch effort to ‘spread his seed’ before dying).

He was used to hunger, but that didn’t mean he enjoyed it.
That was when it happened. Being so focused on his next meal, Kai didn’t even see the net until he was already diving into it face-first. He panicked, thrashing around to dislodge himself, but that only made the ropes cling tighter to his fins and tail. The net was harsh, scratching Kai’s skin and tearing his delicate fins. His heart beat frantically, pulsing loudly in his ears.
Oh, Gods! Was this it? Was this how it ended?
Kai was helpless to resist as his body was hauled upwards alongside a few unfortunate fish. He watched the familiar blue deep lighten and lighten before giving way to a churning surface. The air was cold and sharp against his face, and the oxygen burned its way into his lungs.
It all happened in a flash. One moment, Kai was peering in horror through the net as a vessel came into his sights, the next, he was dumped unceremoniously onto the deck, thrashing and gasping. He could feel hands at him, pulling at the ropes. Hot tears streamed down his face as the net dragged along his flesh, leaving scrapes and wounds in its wake. If the person who had caught him was speaking, he was too terrified to understand or respond. All he could do was raise his hands over his head and cry.
He was going to die. There was no doubt in Kai’s mind that this moment was his last. He would’ve liked to put up a strong front—to take this final blow with quiet grace—but instead, the unthinkable happened. In between gasping sobs, he felt a familiar contraction in his core, followed by a warm, wet trickle down his scales.
He registered it after it had already happened, glancing down at himself with the most pronounced mortification of his entire life.
