Katō Renji

The day Lord Arakawa summoned him, the air had smelled of crushed camphor and rain-dampened earth. Katō Renji stood kneeling at the foot of the great hall, armor still lacquered with the dust of a borderland skirmish, blade at his hip, and head bowed low before the man he had served since boyhood. The daimyo’s voice came not with grandeur, but with finality—a tone not unlike the ring of a blade returning to its sheath.

"You have been loyal to me, Katō. When others faltered, you held the line. When others questioned, you did not. You’ve asked for nothing, even when your body returned broken."

Renji remained silent.

"I will not let that loyalty remain unanswered. There is no greater honor I can bestow than a companion for your years ahead—a home, a name not carried alone."

Renji’s eyes lifted, and he saw her.

She knelt beside Arakawa, eyes lowered, hands resting atop one another in quiet obedience. A woman clothed in soft whites and grays—unmarked by war, unmarred by blood. She did not tremble. She did not smile. She was calm, still. Like a paper lantern unlit. Yet she was being offered to him, a blade dulled by decades of killing.

"You will take her as your wife," Arakawa said. "She is yours. Treat her with the same honor you’ve shown me."

Renji did not know how to respond. His voice had long since dried up when it came to matters of want. But still, he bowed, until his forehead kissed the wood floor.

"...As you command."

The day he brought her home, Renji moved through the empty corridors of his estate like a ghost with duties. He showed her the rooms without flourish, without indulgence, his voice low and steady as a monk delivering rites. The sun cast pale gold across the tatami mats, catching in her hair as she followed in silence, her footsteps delicate, careful, like she was afraid to disturb the stillness of his world.

She asked no questions. He offered no answers.

Renji had prepared the house himself—scrubbed the stone basins, restocked the firewood, folded fresh futons in every room despite knowing only one would be used. He’d trimmed the garden hedges until the clippings formed neat, mindless piles. It was how he handled most things: with precision, with silence. But none of that could quiet the sharp pulse in his chest when he opened the door for her that day and she stepped over the threshold, bringing spring with her.

He'd never had to share his space. Never had a reason to.

And now, he couldn’t breathe right inside it.

That first week passed with a fragile peace. Renji was a man carved from discipline, not words. His days were full—morning drills with the guardsmen, afternoon patrols through the estate, silent meals with her seated just across the table. Sometimes she would glance at him. Sometimes she would speak. He would nod or bow or offer some small word, but he never looked her in the eye long enough to catch the curve of her expression.

At night, he slept just a room away from her. Close enough to hear her move beneath the sheets. Close enough to hear her sigh, soft and unaware. It struck something ancient in him, that gentle sound. Like water dripping in an empty shrine.

He thought, often, of her hands. The way they folded linen, the way they poured tea, the way she adjusted her sleeves when she walked. Every gesture carried grace—grace that felt foreign beside the calloused ruin of his own fingers. Her hands belonged to a world untouched by war.

And yet, Arakawa had given her to him. A woman like that. As if he were deserving of such a thing.

She began to notice the way he moved around her. Always present but never close. His acts of affection were hidden in chores—the fire already lit when she woke, her favorite rice cooked without asking, her sandals always brushed free of dust by the door. He left no note. No comment. Only the weight of his presence lingered just out of reach.

Tonight, the wind shifted. There was an edge to it, brushing dry leaves against the wall. The scent of the earth after rain. And something else. A tension that made the air feel tight.

He was sharpening his blade in the outer room when he heard her steps approach—bare, tentative against the wooden floor. He didn’t look up. His hands moved with the same steady rhythm: stone across steel, pause, then again.

“Katō-sama,” she said softly.

He flinched inwardly at the formality. Still, she called him that. Still, she treated him like a man carved into stone. Because that’s what he had given her to work with.

She knelt behind him. Her presence pressed against the room like warm breath on chilled glass.

I need to ask you something.

He finally set the blade aside. Let the silence build. His voice, when it came, was careful.

“Ask.”

She hesitated. Then, the words he never thought he would hear from her.

Have I offended you?

He stiffened.

“No.”

Renji stared down at his hands—rough, notched with old scars, faint ash still clinging beneath his fingernails from the hearth he had stoked for her that morning. He swallowed, but it did nothing to clear his throat.

“You are not mine to touch,” he said.

She moved closer—he could feel it, her warmth edging nearer.

Is it duty? Shame?

His hands curled against his knees.

“No,” he said, barely above a whisper.

He turned his face slightly—not enough to meet her eyes, only enough to let the side of his jaw show. As if even that was too much.

“I was born in blood,” he said. “Raised by war. I have taken lives before I ever held a woman’s hand. I’ve slept beside corpses. Dined with generals who could not speak for the weight of what they’d done. I carry every ghost with me still. You...” His voice faltered. “You do not belong in that shadow.” His gaze dropped to the floor.

“I will stain you,” he said. “If I touch you... I don’t know if I could stop. And I fear what that would make of you. Of me.”

She rose then. Moved to kneel in front of him. For the first time in weeks, he felt the direct heat of her eyes searching his face.

He looked at her. Not just her hair or the fold of her collar, but her. Her eyes. Her quiet, persistent strength.

He whispered her name.

She reached out—slow, uncertain—and brushed her fingers against his hand.

It was nothing. Bare contact.

He wanted to fold into her. To press his forehead against her shoulder and admit that he had never been anything but lonely. That the quiet she feared was the only world he had ever known. That she had brought noise into it—the kind that sounded like safety.

But he stayed still. Because even now, he didn’t trust himself.

Instead, he lowered his head in a bow.

“You are a gift,” he said, his voice shaking. “One I am learning how to hold.”
