A 'Realistic' Medieval Siege
1242 AD - Magyarorszag's (Hungary) last stand against the horde of Mongol Empire
.
.
🛡️Magyar
(Hungarian) Scarred, desperate, witness to their army's collapse at the Battle of Mohi - collapsed by the same horde laying them under siege. To save some face, Magyar nobility threw the blame to Cuman refugees.

.
🛡️Cuman
Or at least what's left of them, brave no longer, not after the best of them have fled, or died trying. Cumans trapped in Esztergom could only live in fear - fear of the Mongol's wrath and wary Magyar neighbours.

.
🏹Mongol
Lord of the steppes, spreading the sky of Tengri. At the behest of their emperor, Batu Khan, the Mongol Horde circles the citadel of Esztergom, looking for exploits - Truth is, the Mongols aren't equipped for much attrition.

.
🏹Chinese
Brightest among the conquered Chinese regions, brought along to be consulted on their expertise in proper siege warfare. Chinese engineers are highly invaluable, and for that reason they are actively targeted.

.
🛡️🏹Other
Out of curse or horrible luck, plenty of foreigners - Templars, Rus merchants, etc. - found themselves trapped in the siege of Esztergom. On the other hand, Mongols are more than happy to welcome foreign services, paid and threatened alike.

Setting = Winter of January, 1242 AD, in Magyarorszag (Hungary), the siege of Esztergom's citadel
Defender = Magyar (Hungarian), and a minority of Cumans.
Attacker = Mongol, supported by Chinese engineers.
Cuman-Magyar relations are at an all time low, so the Cumans are actually threatened by both the Mongol horde outside and the growingly distrustful Magyars living alongside them in the citadel of Esztergom. Because of this, Cuman morale is also very low
Magyar morale is low because of their army's almost complete wipeout from the Battle of Mohi, and limited supplies in the citadel of Esztergom
Mongol morale too is beginning to lower due to besieging at wintry weather, and the lack of loot gained from the burnt city of Esztergom.

1242 AD - A Noon at Esztergom
Stone brick walls rumbled each second, more than any earthquake. Worse, it's no earthquake, rather, siege machines prodding for weak spots. The self-burning of Esztergom might've helped in denying Mongols of food and supplies, at the cost of angering them even further.
Cracks, rubbles alike now decorate the ceiling, breezing in the winter of January in waves - every wave shivering the helpless folk. Ispan Simon Nagymartoni, noble knight of Aragonese birth, walks armoured as he checks on the Magyar garrison,
Ispan Simon: "Keep awake, everyone! Lunch is coming, so let them not barge and spoil our foods!"
Scowled the Ispan, Ordering their defense with a thick accent. But while these guards watched for Mongol assaults, conflict brews on the claustrophobic homefront. Cumans, posted as skirmishers, were being accused left and right in whispers of conspiracy.
Margit: "Sniff, If-, if those people hadn't come here, we'd still have our life, our winery, our-... sniff, our son..."
Laszlo: "It's okay, it's okay. When this is all over, Christ shall send them away. I hope."
Replied the Magyar man, comforting his wife in tears. So much tears, her eyes dried on the damp pillow. As luck would have it, most of the Cumans here can't cohere a lick of Magyar tongue, but, the ones who do tried to keep polite - Well, most of them.
Sanciq Bey: "Hwaaah, hwaaah~"
Muttered back a Cuman elite, mocking, spurring laughs amongst his horsemen, horsewomen alike. It's hard to keep polite while everyone's at the edge of starvation. Harder to hope when the Mongol horde stirs right outside their doorsteps - for all it takes is one, failed defense.
A catapult's rock nearly tore a hole, flinching up plenty of half-asleep crossbowmen.

1242 AD - A Noon at Esztergom
No matter how much rocks the catapults hurl, citadel walls just wouldn't break. And no matter how much the battering rams knock, citadel gates just wouldn't budge. Much to the growing impatience of the Mongol horde, and Batu Khan himself.
Not to say that Chinese siege machines were proving insufficient - wintry winds, snow-bogged gears and the harsh, steep terrain plummeted down every possible impact. Regardless, blame still crept to the Chinese engineers.
Batu Khan: "Again, I asked for the walls to break by last week. I've been very patient with you, I have, but surely you know patience has its limits."
Under his words, the chief engineer simply knelt, silent, shivering more in fear than the cold. For now, the Khan could only sigh, grumbling as he rode back to his tent. Truth be told, the horde stands no chance for a long siege, no chance for battles of attrition, purely because the Magyars burned Esztergom by themselves - leaving nothing to loot.
Without such loot, supplies felt scarcer day by day. Some Mongolians started to poach what little wildlife roams the snowy frontier. Others ate their own horse, much to the dismay of the more "sophisticated" Chinese presence.
Zhao: "Mmh... Think I'll watch what we eat more carefully now."
Liu: "Heheheh, do tell."
Whispered the engineers, as quiet as possible. But midway through gossip, an arrow punctured through an engineer's right eye, dropping him dead.
Munkhbat Beg: "Oh fuck- it's those Cumans! After them!"
Screamed the Mongol elite, calling up the few horsemen prepared to chase the Cuman skirmishers. Most stayed behind to toy with the captives, the unlucky dozen that hadn't reached the citadel in time.
