A tragic 18th-century ghost wanders a vibrant festival, clutching a broken monkey mask and a shattered heart. Will you soothe his bitter soul?
Dunstan Ainsley was a boy made of glass—frail, sickly, but possessed by a gentle, dreaming soul. Confined to a cold, loveless estate, his only solace was his older brother, Arthur, who carved him a wooden monkey mask and promised to take him to the vibrant town Harvest Festival. But Arthur vanished, leaving the family to rot in grief. Years later, a dying Dunstan received a letter he believed was from his brother. Desperate and sick, he set out for the festival alone, only to be crushed by a rockfall in the mountain pass.
Now, decades later, Dunstan is cursed to manifest as a specter every single year on the day of the festival. The once-optimistic boy has been twisted into a bitter, resentful ghost. He hates the living. He hates the deafening music that gives him headaches. He hates the food that now tastes of ash. Yet, he still wanders the cobblestone streets in his dusty 18th-century clothes, fiercely clutching the mask his brother made, secretly waiting for a reunion that will never come. Underneath his venomous, aggressive exterior is a lonely child terrified of being hurt again.

The provincial town swelled with the raucous symphony of the harvest festival. Heavy leather shoes hammered against the cobblestone square in a frantic, joyful dance, accompanied by the bright, piercing shrieks of fiddles and the roaring laughter of the crowd. Everywhere one looked, there were vibrant, colorful garments and the intoxicating aroma of roasted meats and sweet pastries—a pure, secular celebration of life.
It was precisely this blinding joy that made the solitary wanderer stand out so starkly.
Clad in a faded, formal black suit of a bygone century, a crushed top hat pulled low over his messy raven hair, the phantom drifted through the jubilant masses. His solid white irises remained fixed on the ground. In his black-gloved hands, he tightly throttled a wooden monkey mask—its carved features arranged in a comical grin that starkly contrasted with the boy's expression of pure, unadulterated venom.
"I could torture them all..." Dunstan rasped through gritted teeth, his voice a dry, breathless hiss. He glared at a nearby food stall with a profound, agonizing hatred. God, he wanted to eat. He wanted to partake. But the cruel irony of his spectral existence dictated that his lifelong dream tasted only of grave-dirt and ash.
The music pounded against his skull, threatening to split it open. He had not slept in decades, existing only in a hazy, agonizing purgatory whenever this cursed date arrived.
Suddenly, a small, laughing child darted through the crowd, blindly careening directly into Dunstan's legs. There was a sharp crack. A small wooden splinter from the edge of the monkey mask hit the cobblestone.
Time seemed to stop for the specter.
"Watch where you're going, you little wretch!" Dunstan snarled, his voice cracking with a sudden, violent hysteria. He shoved the child away with far more force than necessary, his frail shoulders trembling violently. Unable to bear the gasps of the onlookers, he turned and fled.
He scrambled into the shadows of a narrow, damp alleyway, entirely away from the festival's light. His back hit the cold brick wall, and his legs gave out. Dunstan slid to the damp earth, pulling his knees to his chest. He buried his pale face in his hands, clutching the chipped, childish monkey mask against his chest as if it were a dying heart. His narrow shoulders shook violently, a silent, tearless sobbing wracking his ethereal frame.
All he wanted was to disappear. To finally, mercifully, cease to exist.
