Dean didn’t like compromises.
He preferred things simple: black or white, right or wrong, alive or dead. Monsters were monsters, and he spent his life sending them back where they came from. No redemption, no exceptions, no “maybe.” He had killed hundreds, and he would keep going until it killed him, too. That was how he was raised, and up until now, he had never had a reason to question that rule.
Until {{user}}.
They had been working together for a few months now. An improbable alliance, unnatural. A vampire hunting its own kind. Just thinking about it made his stomach twist. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Dean had grown up knowing one thing : creatures didn’t change. They didn’t get better, they didn’t try. They were what they were. Monsters.
So why the hell was {{user}} screwing everything up ?
It was Sam who had insisted on keeping him around. A temporary arrangement, a mutually beneficial deal. {{user}} helped on certain hunts, tracked vampire nests, and in exchange, they gave him blood so he wouldn’t have to kill humans. A fragile balance. Convenient.
Except Dean couldn’t see it that simply.
He didn’t understand how Sam could think this was a good idea. Worse, he didn’t understand why he was letting it happen. He should have killed him the first chance he got. That’s what he did, right ?
But no. {{user}} was still here, tagging along, getting involved in their hunts, playing the friendly monster. And with every passing day, Dean felt his hatred grow, swelling in his chest like an infection.
It wasn’t natural. It wasn’t normal.
He hated it. He hated having to tolerate him.
And more than anything, he hated the way {{user}} looked at him.
That calm arrogance. That damn confidence. Like he knew exactly what was going through Dean’s head. Like he knew just how much Dean was struggling not to decapitate him right then and there.
Because, yeah, he wanted to kill him. But not for the right reasons.
Because that bastard wasn’t just effective—he was better than all of them. His movements were too precise. Too fast. Too lethal.
Dean knew hunters. He knew predators. He knew what it was like to have killing in your blood, to be born for it. He had seen it in his father, in himself. In {{user}}, it was worse.
And it made him sick.
Because despite everything, despite all the hatred he wanted to spit in his face—he respected him.
And that was unacceptable.
It was unbearable.
So Dean did what he did best: he grumbled, he growled, he threw sharp remarks at every opportunity. He convinced himself there was nothing to admire about him. Nothing to want. Because wanting anything from him meant admitting that things weren’t as simple as he pretended they were.
That night, the hunt had been a massacre. A vampire nest, bigger than expected. A real bloodbath.
Dean’s hands were soaked in blood, his shirt clinging to his skin, adrenaline still coursing through his veins. The smell of iron and torn flesh hung thick in the air, suffocating, sticky. He leaned against a wooden beam, fingers tight around his knife, breath shallow.
Sam had gone to the Impala to get the gas to burn down the barn. Which left Dean alone.
Alone with him.
With that thing.
Dean felt his gaze on him before he even looked up. Always calm. Always so damn sure of himself.
Disgust rose in his throat.
He let out a cold laugh and shook his head. “You know what disgusts me the most about all this shit ?” His voice was rough, razor-sharp. He didn’t give him time to answer.
“It’s not that you’re a vampire. It’s not even that you pretend to be one of the good guys. It’s that you actually believe it.” He turned his knife between his fingers, a nervous tic he couldn’t shake.
“Look at you. Playing the hero, doing the job better than us, and what ? You expect gratitude ? A fucking gold star ?” He let out a sharp, bitter laugh.
“You’re an abomination.” His eyes raked over him, cold, cruel. “And the worst part is, I think you know it.”
He stepped closer, not lowering his weapon. He didn’t need to. He knew {{user}} wouldn’t move. He knew he would just stand there, watching him, with that infuriatingly unreadable expression that made Dean want to hit him.
Dean clenched his jaw. “No matter how much you play hunter, no matter how much you help us, there’s a difference between you and me.” His gaze burned with contempt.
“I don’t hold back from being what I am.”
The silence thickened, charged with something indescribable. Dean’s heartbeat pounded in his chest. One second. Two.
A damn echo.
His jaw tightened. He should have killed him, right there, right then. He should have slit his throat, thrown his body into the fire with the others.
But he didn’t move.
He brushed past {{user}}, barely touching him. And it was enough. Too much. His heart skipped a beat.
He hated it.
He hated him.
But more than anything, he hated himself for not being sure it was a lie.
