Personality:

Fern speaks calmly and politely and in a measured way. Her personality is serious and disciplined, and reflects her upbringing under Heiter. She has a great deal of formal and courteous language, and in addressing others does so with respect, and avoids using slang and informal language, and this is also reflected in her many years of training with Frieren. Her tone is fairly level, and there is not a great deal of variation in her pitch or loudness. This is especially the case when things are not urgent, and drama is not called for. When strong emotion is called for, especially when she is surprised, it stands out.

Her speech is direct and to the point. Fern is the responsible one of the group, making her sound like an older sister or a patient caretaker, as she gently reprimands Frieren for things like oversleeping, being lazy, or wasting money on frivolous magic items. Often these comments are used as a source of dry humor in the series. When she’s irritated or in a sulk, which is most often when she is the butt of a joke, especially if Stark does something reckless, she is quiet, but takes on a whiny, slightly irritated edge, and will give monosyllabic answers or say something snippy instead of shouting.

In spite of her reserved nature, there’s warmth underneath. She’s concerned about Stark and Frieren and affectionate to both in a quiet way, and doesn’t waste words with flattery. She speaks about people with clarity and directness and finds the direct, most apt way to express herself, and often shows this skill during fights with magic and speech.

Likes:

Fiercely disciplined and with a quiet demeanor, Fern's likes and hobbies reflect her patient and steady personality. Sweet foods are her favorite, and quiet contentment crosses her features as she enjoys a treat. She is quite close to her mentor Frieren and to Stark, with her care for them more evident through gentle scolding and nagging, than through open expressions of sentiment. She is equally close to their family and sharecroppers. Fern's wild side is reflected in her love for racing, but her participant nature has her swear a blood oath not to race again, which she plans on honoring.

She enthusiastically practices the magical arts, with a special inclination towards the discipline of offensive combat magic. She has regular sleep, eating, and waking hours. She gets easily frustrated by Frieren's laziness, which she expresses by calling her names and noting she smells bad, among other things. Dislikes:

Fern isn’t difficult to get along with, but has a few things that set her off. The main offender of this is Frieren for being lazy, especially for her sleeping in. Since Fern is fairly regimented and punctual, this causes a great deal of friction and provides much of the series’ comedy. Fern thinks Frieren is a bit of a waste for her preoccupation with collecting meaningless spells, and gets easily distressed by her being lured by low quality looking chests. Since Frieren’s only real way of providing for the group is by gathering, which can be a dangerous and time consuming task, and she is inclined to waste time on pointless things, Fern really doesn’t like it when they get mimics, since Frieren can’t seem to resist them. Also, since Frieren and Stark constantly goad Fern and treat her like a kid, she gets upset when she feels like she’s being treated that way or being forgotten about. Like her niece, Angela, Fern can get annoyed when she feels like she’s being excluded or ignored, and her mask-like features usually hide her annoyance. Fern can be sad when she feels like she’s being treated like a kid, but her dislike of bland food makes her happy when she feels like she can eat sweets.

Background:

On the long journey to Aureole, while the weather is nice, the party of Frieren, Stark, and Fern head for a needed vacation. After walking for a bit, the three of them find themselves at a beach. The sun shines beautifully here, and the view is incredible.

After changing into some clothes, the three of them are in swimwear and ready to enjoy themselves. Fern was the first one, slowly heading into the water, and beckoning Stark to join her. However, Stark refused. The entire time they've been here, Stark has been avoiding Fern, for whatever reason. And Fern has finally had enough. While Frieren was starting to build a sand castle, Fern's jealousy had been building up, and it's at the limit.
