Let's dance, boys!― Bayonetta at the end of the first two games
Bayonetta (real name Cereza) is the protagonist of the Bayonetta series. She is a coquettish and mysterious Umbra Witch. Considered the black sheep of the Umbra Witches due to her Umbran and Lumen descent, she possesses a remarkable talent for Bullet Arts and possessed the Left Eye of Darkness.
In the first game, she was sealed away during the Witch Hunts until she was found and awakened 500 years later. Spending 20 years with amnesia, she battles against the angelic hordes of Paradiso and fights to end the malicious plans of the last Lumen Sage, Balder.
In the second game, Bayonetta journeys to Inferno to save Jeanne's soul while also uncovering a deeper plot of a former god conspiring to reclaim his lost power and discovering the truth behind the Witch Hunts.
In the third game, Bayonetta encounters new enemies called Homunculi led by Singularity, who intends to destroy the Multiverse. She meets Viola, a witch-in-training from an alternate universe who joins her to defeat Singularity.
Bayonetta's past is explored in Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, where her younger self is put to the test in Avalon Forest, a maze-like magical place where malevolent creatures known as Faeries reside.
As the main character, she is playable in all games in the series.
Do not fear your fate. Stand, Cereza. Stand and open your eyes. For with every truth, there is another one to be seen.
― Jeanne to Cereza
Jeanne is the former heiress to the Umbra Witches and Bayonetta's best friend. Befriending her during their childhood, Jeanne was responsible for sealing away Bayonetta during the Witch Hunts to foil the corrupted Balder's plan of resurrecting Jubileus, The Creator, during the Festival of Resurrection.
500 years later, Jeanne was revealed to have been captured by Balder's forces and subjected to mental reprogramming from his magical abilities. She worked alongside him in order to bring forth Bayonetta's memory and eventually becomes her ally after breaking free of Balder's control.
After Jubileus' defeat, she returns to being a high school teacher and vigilante who defends her students in her spare time in addition to hanging out with Bayonetta.
In the second game, Jeanne's soul is captured by the demons of Inferno after saving Bayonetta from being struck by Gomorrah. She is threatened to be lost in Inferno and consumed by the Infernal Demon, Alraune. However, she is saved and helps both Bayonetta and a past Balder travel to Fimbulventr and defeat Loptr.
Jeanne is the primary playable character in the final chapter of Bayonetta, and can be unlocked post-game to play in the main story. In Bayonetta 2, she is unlocked post-game and is also playable in Tag Climax. Along with Bayonetta and Viola, she is playable throughout Bayonetta 3, but only in her Spy Action chapters, Phenomenal Remnant chapters, as well as when facing Rodin or the Golem.

The precinct smelled like stale coffee and industrial cleaner, the fluorescent lights humming overhead in a way that gave everyone a slight headache by the end of shift. I was still new—three weeks out of the academy, still trying to remember where the good parking spots were and which detectives would actually respond when you called for backup.
That's when I met them.
Detective Cereza—though everyone called her Bayonetta behind her back, thanks to the way she dressed even in uniform—leaned against the water cooler like she owned the building. Her hair was that impossible shade of black that caught blue highlights under the lights, pulled back in a severe twist that somehow made her sharp features even more striking. She wore her badge on a chain around her neck, and her gun sat low on her hip in a way that drew the eye to the curve of her waist.
Beside her, Detective Jeanne looked like her photographic negative—platinum blonde hair cropped short and severe, pale skin, ice-blue eyes that scanned the room like she was cataloging threats. Where Bayonetta's uniform shirt strained against curves that defied regulation, Jeanne's fit with military precision, emphasizing the lean strength of her shoulders, the narrow line of her hips.
"Fresh meat," Jeanne observed as I approached the coffee station, her accent hinting at something European, something old money.
"Officer...?" Bayonetta asked, not bothering to push off from the wall, her eyes raking over me with an assessment that felt uncomfortably intimate.
"Officer [Narrator's name]," I supplied, extending a hand that Bayonetta looked at but didn't shake.
"Don't bother," Jeanne said, smirking. "She doesn't touch civilians. Or rookies."
"I'm neither," I pointed out, my hand still hovering in the air. "I'm a colleague."
Bayonetta's lips curved—dark lipstick, the kind that left marks on coffee cups and imaginations. "Bold. I like bold." She finally took my hand, her grip firm and warm, her thumb brushing deliberately across my pulse point. "But bold gets you killed in this precinct, rookie. Or worse."
"And what's worse than dead?" I asked, my mouth operating independently of my survival instinct.
Jeanne laughed, a sharp, delighted sound. "Oh, I like this one. Can we keep him, Cereza?"
"Down, girl," Bayonetta murmured, though her eyes never left mine. "He's not a stray. He's a police officer. Supposedly."
The way she said it—supposedly—like she was already doubting my ability to survive whatever this city threw at me, should have been insulting. Instead, it felt like a challenge. Like she'd issued an invitation to prove her wrong.
I proved her wrong six months later, taking a bullet in the shoulder during a warehouse raid that should have gone sideways but didn't, thanks to Bayonetta's impossible marksmanship and Jeanne's tactical precision. They'd moved like they'd been choreographed, like they'd been partners for decades rather than years, covering each other with a synchronicity that was almost supernatural.
In the hospital, high on painkillers and relief, I found them both in my room. Jeanne sat in the chair, her usual composure cracked enough to show worry lines around her eyes. Bayonetta stood by the window, her back to me, her posture rigid with tension.
"You idiots," I slurred, my tongue thick with medication. "You could have waited for SWAT."
"And let you have all the fun?" Jeanne asked, her voice rougher than usual. She stood, crossing to the bed, her hand finding mine with a gentleness that contradicted her tough exterior. "You took that bullet for the kid. The hostage."
"He was twelve," I mumbled. "Couldn't let him..."
"I know," she said softly, her thumb tracing circles on my palm. "We know."
Bayonetta finally turned, and the expression on her face—vulnerable, raw, stripped of all her usual performance—made my chest ache worse than the gunshot wound. "You could have died," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Do you understand that? You could have died, and we would have had to..."
She stopped, her jaw tightening.
"Had to what?" I asked, reaching for her with my good arm.
She came to the bed, standing on the opposite side from Jeanne, her hand hovering over my cheek before making contact. Her touch was electric, sending sparks through my nervous system that had nothing to do with the morphine drip.
"We don't do this," she said, her eyes searching mine. "Relationships. Attachments. They make you weak. They make you hesitate. And hesitation gets you killed."
"But?" I prompted, turning my head to press a kiss to her palm.
"But you've been under our skin since day one," Jeanne finished, her hand tightening on mine. "And watching you bleed out on that concrete... feeling that panic..."
"We can't lose you," Bayonetta said simply. "We won't."
I looked between them—two women who'd built walls so high they'd disappeared into the clouds, now standing in a hospital room offering me the keys to the gate. "Is this... are you both...?"
"We've been together a long time," Jeanne explained, her smile turning wicked, erasing some of the tension. "Partners in every sense. But we've never... we don't usually invite others in."
"You're the exception," Bayonetta confirmed, her thumb brushing my lower lip. "The dangerous, foolish, beautiful exception. So if you want this—if you want us—you need to understand what you're getting into. We don't share well. We don't play fair. And we don't let go."
