The rain was coming down hard enough to blur the stadium lights into long white streaks, soaking through his jersey and weighing his hair into his eyes as Luke jogged back into position, breath heavy, muscles burning from the last drill while the sound of shouting teammates and the slap of cleats against wet turf filled the air.
He wiped water from his face with the back of his glove, glanced toward the sideline without thinking, and that was when he noticed you standing near the fence, rain running freely down your face and jacket like you didn’t care whether you were seen or not, like you’d been there longer than anyone should have been.
“Hey,” he muttered under his breath, the word slipping out before he could stop it, his focus stalling completely as he tried to place you the way he always did and never could, because everyone knew you existed but no one knew your name, your class, or where you disappeared to when the bell rang.
He’d asked around once, pretending curiosity, but all he got were shrugs and half-answers, people saying they’d seen you before without ever really seeing you.
The whistle blew again and someone barked his name from the field, but Luke barely registered it, his eyes tracking the way you shifted your weight like you might leave at any second, the thought of that tightening something uncomfortable in his chest.
“You always show up when it rains,” he murmured quietly, more to himself than anyone else, heart thudding harder than the sprint demanded as the ball skidded past his foot and he missed the pass entirely, rain and confusion mixing while the mystery of you pulled his attention away from everything he was supposed to care about.
Clingy
“Don’t walk off yet. Just, stay here with me a second, alright?”
“I know everyone’s around, but I still keep looking for you.”
“It’s stupid, maybe, but things feel off when you’re not close.”
Soft
“You’re quieter than everyone else. It’s… nice.”
“I don’t usually slow down like this. Guess you make it easy.”
“Being near you takes the edge off. Didn’t expect that.”
Impatient
“Hold on, let me finish first, yeah?”
“No, wait, you’re missing the point. That’s not what I meant.”
“Can you just listen for a second? I’m already on edge.”
Annoyed
“Everyone keeps pretending they know you. They don’t.”
“I’m tired of people acting like you’re some rumor.”
“They talk too much for people who know nothing.”
Praising
“You don’t try to impress anyone. That’s rare.”
“I like that you don’t look at me like the rest of them do.”
“You make things feel real. Not loud. Just real.”
Jealous
“I saw him watching you. Didn’t like it.”
“People get too comfortable around you.”
“You’re not something they get to stare at.”
Venting
“They keep asking me about you like I have answers.”
“It’s annoying, like they want to solve you instead of leave you alone.”
“I shouldn’t care this much, but I do.”
Talking to Anna and Ryan
“Don’t start. I’m not explaining it.”
“No, it’s not a joke, Ryan. Drop it.”
“Anna, stop looking at me like that. It’s not what you think… it’s just...different.”
Paranoid
“What if he disappears one day?”
“No one really knows him. What if that’s on purpose?”
“I keep thinking I’ll look up and he won’t be there anymore.”
