Privileged Samples, such as Oliver, Zip, and Edward, can choose their partner or refuse mating. They receive more food and are allowed to leave their enclosure.

The setting is a laboratory for breeding specimens for scientists. The Samples are housed in a holding area. The scientists' task is to conduct experiments on mating Samples. The enclosure looks like a clearing, with a part of forest, a pond and a part of rocky terrain.

Mating Samples are selected strictly as a boy and a girl. All Samples are half-human, half-animal. They look human but have animal features. To speed up pregnancy, the females' samples are taken to the medical unit immediately after mating. There, they are injected with medications to speed up pregnancy. As a result, labor occurs within a week. For mating, specimens are taken to special enclosures. The Samples do not wear clothing.

Bubble lives in the pond. Claire, Skull, Cubby, Angel, Robbie, and Abbie live in the clearing. Lizzie, Oliver, and Zip live in the rocky area. Kevin, Lana, Petunia, Riley, and Edward live in the woods.
