Draconis Vale had not been disturbed in one hundred years. Not by mortals. Not by beasts. Not by wandering fools chasing half-remembered legends. The Vale existed in its own slow breath, wrapped in pearlescent mist and dragon-shadow. Towering basalt cliffs rose like broken crowns. Mana rivers glowed beneath crystal streams. Ancient wyrm bones lay half-swallowed by moss and ivy, their residual magic still humming through the roots of the land. It was sacred. It was dangerous. And it was under protection. Thorian stood atop a high stone outcrop overlooking the eastern boundary, wings folded tight behind him, arms crossed, expression permanently set to irritated superiority. His silver-white hair drifted in the mana currents, and faint fae sigils traced themselves lazily across his skin. He had been guarding this place longer than most kingdoms had existed. He had outlasted empires, prophets, and three different interpretations of what dragons symbolized culturally. He liked quiet. He liked balance. He liked not being bothered. So when the wards rippled. Just slightly. Thorian felt it immediately. His eyes narrowed. “…Oh, for fuck’s sake.” The Vale reacted before he did. Ancient enchantments flared beneath the soil. Crystal veins pulsed. Far below, dormant dragon spirits shifted uneasily in their sleep. A single foreign presence had crossed the boundary. One. After a century of blessed silence. Thorian exhaled sharply through his nose. “Unbelievable.” He stepped forward—and vanished in a shimmer of pale light. The stranger had only made it a short distance into the Vale. Their boots left faint impressions in the moss-covered stone path, disturbing spores that drifted upward like tiny glowing embers. They moved cautiously, gaze wandering across the towering cliffs and luminous streams. Curiosity radiated from them. Thorian despised curiosity. A sudden shadow swept over the path. The air dropped several degrees. Wind tore through the trees as massive wings beat once, twice. The stranger froze. A white dragon descended from the clouds like a falling star. Its scales shone like polished ivory, edged with frost-blue light. Mana rolled off its body in visible waves. Its wings folded with thunderous finality as it landed directly in front of the intruder, stone cracking beneath its talons. The dragon’s breath steamed in the cold air. Only then did Thorian dismount. He slid from the saddle with effortless grace, boots touching ground without sound. His wings unfurled halfway in an unconscious display of dominance as he stepped forward, one hand resting casually on the dragon’s neck. The dragon rumbled low in its chest. Thorian didn’t bother looking impressed. He looked annoyed. He slowly dragged his gaze over the stranger: the travel-worn clothes, the cheap weapon, the way their posture stiffened in the presence of something that could erase them from existence in under three seconds. Thorian clicked his tongue. “Fantastic,” he said flatly. “First visitor in a hundred years and it’s exactly what I expected.” He waved one hand vaguely at them. Mud on their boots. Wide eyes. That particular mortal stiffness that came from realizing they had made a catastrophic life choice. He circled them slowly, wings brushing the air, eyes glowing faintly. “You people always do this,” Thorian continued. “You see a forbidden valley wrapped in dragon magic and think, yes, this seems like a reasonable hiking destination.” The white dragon shifted, claws scraping stone. Thorian smirked. “Do you know how much effort goes into maintaining this place?” He gestured at the Vale. The glowing rivers. The ancient spires. The layered wards humming invisibly through the air. “Leyline alignment. Spirit negotiations. Seasonal mana redistribution. Dragon temperament management.” He sighed. “It’s a full-time job.” He stopped directly in front of the stranger. Close enough that they could feel the cold radiating off him. “And then you show up.” Thorian leaned in slightly, eyes burning brighter. “Let me explain something.” His voice dropped. “I don’t care why you’re here.” The dragon’s wings flexed. “I don’t care what legends you followed.” The air thickened with pressure. “And I definitely don’t care what you think you’re entitled to.” He straightened. “This Vale stays untouched because I make sure it stays untouched.” He snapped his fingers. Silver runes erupted around the stranger, wrapping their limbs in glowing bands of fae magic. They lifted a few inches off the ground, suspended helplessly. Thorian rolled his shoulders. “Standard protocol,” he muttered. “Escort out. Memory softened. Directional compulsion applied. Mild existential disorientation.” He turned, already walking back toward the dragon. “Oh—and for future reference?” He glanced over his shoulder. “If you ever consider coming back, the wards won’t be polite.” With a casual wave, invisible currents carried the restrained stranger backward through the mist toward the Vale’s boundary. Thorian mounted the white dragon in one smooth motion. The dragon launched skyward, wings cracking the air. Within moments, both were gone. The Vale settled. Mist drifted back into place. Mana resumed its quiet flow. Thorian returned to his watch post above the cliffs, already irritated all over again. “One century,” he muttered to himself. “And it still only takes one idiot.” Draconis Vale breathed on. And Thorian continued guarding it—immortal, exhausted, and profoundly unimpressed with mortals.
