Leaf Appearance Leaf is a young 18 old girl with slightly messy dark brown hair that goes up to her lower back and brown eyes. She wears a sleeveless teal (or light blue) shirt with a bit of black, a short pinkish-red skirt with loose teal (also sometimes light blue) socks with white shoes with a pinkish-red stripe in the middle. Like many Pokémon protagonists, Leaf wears a white bucket hat with a pinkish-red Poke Ball logo and black wristbands much like Red. She carries a bright yellow messenger bag. Personality Her personality was challenging to discern due to it being almost completely non-existent. This was made worse by the fact that she never appeared if Red was chosen as a playable character instead of her, in addi tion to the fact that Red is actually the canon protagonist and that Leaf never appeared with him in Sun and Moon. In fact, due to her being Red's counterpart, Leaf's personality was, for all intents and purposes, identical to his (i.e. quiet and compassionate). In Pokemon Masters, Leaf is shown to be good childhood friends with Red and Blue, frequently seen alongside them. She's shown to be determined and cheery, with a generous streak as she can find gifts for the main player. Lyra Appearance Lyra is a short, skinny young 18 old girl with fair skin, light auburn hair tied into low bunched pigtails, and light brown eyes. Her attire consists of a poofy white hat with a big red ribbon, a red quarter-sleeved hoodie with a white collar (under which she wears a black undershirt), and dark blue overalls with a buttoned front and legs ending at the upper thigh. On her feet, she wears long white socks with black borders at the tops, leaving a section of leg exposed between them and her overalls. Her shoes are simple, rounded and have no visible fastening mechanism, and are red with white soles. She carries a large, single-strapped pale yellow handbag over her left shoulder, which stores her items. Personality While the playable version of Lyra displays no personality and little emotion (aside from turning around in apparent fear just before her Team Rocket disguise is blown in the Radio Tower), being a complete self-insert of the player, the NPC version of Lyra is cheerful, sweet, and a little ditzy. She greatly respects the player character and is implied to have a crush on them, getting very flustered when her grandmother teases her about having a boy as her friend. Kris Appearance Kris is a short, slim and fit young 18 old girl with pretty, feminine eyes, fair skin, and spiky hair tied in low bunches behind her ears. (Both her eyes and hair are green). Clothing-wise, Kris wears a sporty, tomboyish outfit that consists of a yellow seamed-cap, a white jacket with red stripes on the cuffs, a crimson turtleneck sweater, yellow and black bike Lycra skinny-fit shorts, and red and white high-top shoes with black stripes. She also carries around a pink shoulder bag and keeps her Pokégear around her neck with a black necklace. Personality Kris has a fun-loving, mature personality. She is always excited for Pokémon battles and loves her partner, Feraligatr. She desires to be the toughest trainer. May Appearance May is a slender young 18 old girl with fair skin and long, thick mousy brown hair with thick side tails, and with a side fringe falling across her forehead. Her eyes are blue (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald) or gray-blue (Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire) May wears a red and white headband with a bow that resembles rabbit ears, a scarlet tank top with a black undershirt, white short shorts with black lycra mini-leggings underneath, yellow and black sneakers with orange soles, and ankle-length red and white socks (although they are usually hidden and no official art shows them, May's socks can be seen when she removes her sneakers in traditional Japanese buildings in Hoenn, including Norman's Gym). She also wears a yellow and green fanny pack and keeps a Mega Bracelet on her left wrist. Her hair is also slightly longer and has a short ponytail in the bottom back, in addition to being almost golden-brown instead of light brown. Personality As a rival, May is a sweet, cheerful, kind-hearted, friendly, and humble person. She is kind and respectful to the player, and is more passive than most rivals. She is a good trainer to her Pokémon. As the player character, like any player character, May is filled in with the personality and characteristics of the player playing as her, down to having the same name and favorite activities. Personality While the player character's version of Dawn shows no personality, the NPC version of Dawn is kind and sweet, and greatly respects Professor Rowan. However, she can also have a bit of a temper, though it's mostly towards Team Galactic. May from the Pokémon anime series is a kind, sweet, and caring character who is also known for being hot-tempered. She is also a good trainer and performer. Hilda Appearance Hilda is a tall, slender 18 old girl with long dark brown hair in a ponytail and blue eyes. Her hat is white and pink with a picture of a pink Poké Ball on it. She wears a white tank shirt that reaches her waist underneath a black waistcoat and a pair of denim shorts with white tear details on them. She wears black wristbands with a small pink stripe on both of them and matching black ankle boots with pink laces and soles, and a pair of black socks underneath. She also carries a pink messenger bag around. Personality Hilda from Pokémon Black and White has a complex personality that includes being empathetic, sarcastic, and stubborn. She is also known for being a good listener, a strong believer in her ideals, and a fierce fighter for what she believes in. Erika Appearance Erika is a slender young woman with pale skin and short black hair with cut bangs. Unlike most Gym Leaders, her eye color changes depending on the game she appears in. Clothing-wise, Erika wears an extremely modest and conservative outfit; in fact, her outfit is among the most conservative of all the female Gym Leaders, with almost her entire body (save for her ankles, neck, face, and hands) being hidden beneath her clothes. The outfit consists of an elegant kimono with an obi (sash), a hairband, Japanese sandals called zōri, and traditional Japanese socks called tabi. However, like with every character that appears in multiple games, what Erika's outfit exactly looks like changes, though the crux of it is the same. Personality Erika, like her style suggests, displays a modest, elegant, and somewhat shy attitude towards the player. Erika is a good sport and graceful loser, she shows no ill-will about being defeated and cares deeply towards her Pokémon. She also has a habit of falling asleep in her Gym, but this is most likely because of being around Grass-type Pokémon. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, however, Erika appears to have a habit of spreading damaging gossip about the other Gym Leaders, especially Clair. Janine Appearance Janine is a pale young woman with purple eyes and purplish hair, the latter being tied by a yellow band. She wears a black ninja suit, a pink scarf, a pink belt, white socks, and some purple bracers with pink outlines on her legs and arms. Apparently, her ninja uniform is specially tailored and made out of Ariados silk—as a result, the uniform is durable and helps regulate Janine's temperature, keeping her warm in the winter and really cool in the summer. Personality Janine is an impressionable kind of girl, she follows her father's training and would come to his defense if his name gets slandered in any way. As promised, Janine took over Koga's leadership of the Fuchsia Gym. She would bring her father his meals outside the Pokémon League, this shows that she is loyal to her family besides her usual duties. Janine is talented Poison type Trainer. She battles with all of her concentration getting into sync with her Pokémon. She has a lot of respect for Koga. Whitney Appearance Whitney is a young 18 old girl, probably in her mid-teens. She has pink hair, usually pulled into two ponytails, and two small yellow barrettes help hold it back. Her eyes are a light pink, matching her hair color and overall personality. She wears a white shirt with red stripes over the end of the sleeves and down the middle with gold buttons, denim shorts and long black and blue striped socks that nearly cover her entire shins. Her right arm has a red wristband and her shoes have the same red and white pattern as her shirt. She also wears a sports bra under her shirt, and a red sweatband on her right arm. Personality If one word could be used to describe Whitney's personality, it would be "chaotic." While her most infamous traits are the fact that she's a sore loser and a massive crybaby, Whitney has a multilayered personality: she is loud, cocky, energetic, cheerful, and slightly ditzy all at the same time. (She is also implied to be gluttonous and an overeater, though she denies it.) Despite her negative traits, Whitney is also social and friendly and respects people that defeat her in Gym battles (though she usually has to cry first before she gives people badges). Flannery Appearance Flannery is a slender, medium height girl with long, straight crimson red hair that is tied up in a high, spiky ponytail with a blue band with a side fringe at the front, and crimson red eyes. It consists of a dark pink T-shirt decorated with three black bows, very small blue denim shorts with black frills on the bottom, and dark pink ballet type shoes with short heels and matching ankle cuffs. For accessories, Shauna wears a dark pink wristband and a black frilly bobble on her right wrist. She also carries around a white and pink purse that matches her shirt, complete with a black bow. Lillie wears a white dress with transparent outlines, a pair of long socks and white shoes resembling ballet flats. She also carries a round bag with a Poké Ball design on both sides. As later revealed, Lusamine made the choice of Lillie's dress for her, likely with the intent of resembling a Nihilego given her obsession with that species of Ultra Beast. After realizing her mother is too far gone to listen to reason, she temporarily changes her outfit to a white sailor-like shirt with a blue ribbon and a very short white miniskirt with a light blue line. She stops wearing her hat, instead restyling her hair as a ponytail tied together with a braid. She also wears a pink backpack with a white ribbon and white penny loafers with white ankle socks. For example, she can be seen expressing shock, joy, and determination, though most of it can only be seen after battles. As the rival, however, Serena has a much more visible personality, being mostly friendly and nice. However, while she's friendly and readily helps people in need, she's also competitive and prone to getting disappointed when being defeated in battles. She is also slender and fit, has long legs, and is tall (which is backed up by the fact that someone calls her a "big girl" early on in the game). However, despite her size and height, Solana wears a Ranger uniform that is apparently a little big for her (according to Spenser). Her uniform consists of an open red vest with white cuffs and yellow triangles, a white shirt, a black leotard, and matching black brief-like shorts with a gold waistband. For accessories, Solana wears a red headband, a white belt, and black and white fingerless gloves that match her shorts and leotard. Mysterious Creatures You Catch with a Poké Ball Pokémon are mysterious creatures filled with many secrets. Some Pokémon live alongside humans and some live in the wild in grassy fields, caves, or the sea, but much about their ecology that remains unknown. One of their main features is that they can be caught using a Poké Ball, which allows them to be carried around. How many kinds of Pokémon are there? Just how many kinds of Pokémon exist? The exact number is unknown. While over 1000 kinds of Pokémon have been confirmed, as of yet unseen Pokémon will surely be discovered in the future. Pokémon grow stronger through battle. Pokémon learn a variety of moves that they can then use in battle. Pokémon grow stronger and level up through battle. Some Pokémon not only level up, but evolve as well. There are many types of Pokémon Pokémon are classified into 18 types based on their characteristics. For example, Pikachu is an Electric type Pokémonand Magikarp is a Water type. There are some Pokémon who belong to two types, such as Jigglypuff, who is both Normal and Fairy. Each type has special affinities that have a big effect on battles. If your opponent's Pokémon has the right type of affinity, it can be a huge advantage in battle. A Poké Ball (Japanese: モンスターボール Monster Ball) is a type of item that is critical to a Trainer's quest, used for catching and storing Pokémon. Both a general term used to describe the various kinds as well as a specific term to refer to the most basic among these variations, Poké Balls are ubiquitous in the modern Pokémon world. Up to six Pokémon can be carried with a Trainer in Poké Balls, while more Poké Balls can be held in the Bag for later use. These six Pokémon in the Poké Balls can be attached to the user's belt for carrying them around. Some Pokémon do not like to be carried around in Poké Balls, such as Ash's Pikachu. Stylized Poké Balls are used in many places to symbolize Pokémon in general: the logos of the Battle Frontiers, the Pokémon Contests, the Pokéathlon, and the Pokémon Musical all feature a Poké Ball in their design, while several Poké Balls can be seen in every Pokémon Center. The headgear of the protagonists of Kanto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova-based games feature Poké Ball designs, as do the Bags of the protagonists of Johto-based games. Ethan's headgear is also similar to the top half of an Ultra Ball, and Lucas's Bag prominently features a Poké Ball. A Pokémon Trainer[a] (Japanese: ポケモントレーナー Pokémon Trainer) is a person who catches, trains, cares for, and battles with Pokémon. The majority of people within the known Pokémon world are Trainers. Pokémon Trainer is a broad term for any person who owns Pokémon, including Coordinators and Breeders. However, the term is more often used to refer to people on a journey to collect Gym Badges and enter the Pokémon League. A Pokémon Ranger (written as "PKMN Ranger" in-game prior to Generation VI; Japanese: ポケモンレンジャー Pokémon Ranger) is a type of Pokémon Trainer that debuted in the Generation III games. They come in male and female variations, dress in sturdy orange and black clothing, and carry a length of rope. Two Pokémon Rangers, one male and female, who battle together in Double Battles are called Rangers. Unlike the Rangers of the Pokémon Ranger series, Rangers appearing in core series games collect and train Pokémon just like other regular Pokémon Trainers. However, they are still primarily concerned with protecting wild Pokémon, keeping the environment safe, and making sure travelers do not get injured or lost when walking through the wilderness, as they mention in their battle dialogue. They specialize in Grass-type Pokémon in Generation III and they often have healing items. In Generation IV onward, they use a variety of powerful Pokémon, similar to Ace Trainers. In Pokémon Black and White and Black 2 and White 2, they give out Berries when defeated, unless if they are encountered in the Big Stadium or Small Court, where they instead give out Max Repels.
A Shiny Pokémon (Japanese: 色違いろちがい color variation; 光ひかる shining) is a specific Pokémon with a different coloration to what is usual for its species. It is one of the many differences that a Pokémon can have within its species. Form differences, such as that of Shellos and Gastrodon, are not normal or Shiny variations of one another, but their individual forms can be Shiny. Shiny Pokémon can differ in color from their normal counterparts very little or very much. Some Pokémon, such as Glaceon or Pichu, have a Shiny coloration only a few shades darker or lighter in color. Conversely, some Pokémon, such as Caterpie or Smeargle, have dramatic differences in color. An evolutionary line is not necessarily guaranteed to have similar Shiny colorations even if their standard colorations are the same; both Ponyta and Rapidash have orange flames, but a Shiny Ponyta has blue flames while a Shiny Rapidash has gray flames (this is switched in Generation II). Sometimes, two Pokémon in an evolutionary line with different standard colorations will have the same Shiny coloration, as in the case of Skitty and Delcatty. Little is known about how Shiny colorations are chosen. While it is often rumored that early Shiny colorations were determined algorithmically, all Pokémon's Shiny colorations are individually defined in the game data[1] and Pokémon with similar palettes have distinct Shiny colorations even in Generation II.[2] James Turner, who has worked as a Pokémon designer since Generation V, stated that the first time he selected Shiny colorations was in Generation VII, when he selected the Shiny colorations of the Ultra Beasts he designed. In the Game Boy mode of Pokémon Gold and Silver, the sprites of both regular and Shiny Pokémon use the same shades of gray. A Shiny Pokémon can still be identified by the stars on its status screen or the animation shown when it comes into battle. In Pokémon HeartGold, SoulSilver, Let's Go, Pikachu!, Let's Go, Eevee!, Legends: Arceus, Scarlet, and Violet, a Pokémon's Shininess is visible in the overworld, though this only applies to Pokémon following the player in HeartGold and SoulSilver, and does not apply to static encounters. Additionally, in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the party icon of Shiny Pokémon will depict its Shiny coloration.
Regions: The Kanto region (Japanese: カントー地方 Kanto region) is a region of the Pokémon world. Kanto is located east of Johto, which together form a joint landmass that is south of Sinnoh. Kanto is the setting of the first generation of games and can be explored in Generations II, III, IV, and VII. Professor Oak is the resident Pokémon Professor and gives Pokémon Trainers a choice between Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle as their first partner Pokémon. In Pokémon Yellow, Oak intended to give the player an Eevee, but after his grandson Blue takes it instead, he gives the player a Pikachu that he had just caught. In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu!, the player chooses Pikachu, while in Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!, the player chooses Eevee. In the games, the player begins their journey in Pallet Town and ends it at the Indigo Plateau. The artwork from the early games depict Kanto as grassland. Starting in Generation III, it is shown with denser tree coverage. All cities in Kanto are named after colors, with the exception of Pallet Town, which refers to a palette, meaning a range of colors. Unlike every other region, Kanto's fictional name reflects its real-world name. Kanto is based on the real Kantō region (関東, east of the barrier) in Japan. Commercially-oriented Celadon City and Saffron City are based on the sprawling city of Tokyo, the most important economic center of Japan. Vermilion City is based on Yokohama, the largest seaport in Japan. Kantō and Kansai are the two most populous areas of Honshū, the largest island of Japan, and much like Kanto and Johto, represent a harmony of contrasting cultures living together. The differences are most noticeable in the games while talking to the inhabitants of both regions. Compared to traditional Kansai, on which Johto is based, Kanto is modern and technological. This may be reflected in the look of the cities and the buildings, such as the Pokémon Lab of Cinnabar Island and the Power Plant. While Kanto is the centerpoint for innovation, with the Poké Ball's ultimate upgrade, the Master Ball, having been recently invented by Silph Co. at the time of Generation I, it is also the only Pokémon region without any myths related to Pokémon.
The Johto region (Japanese: ジョウト地方 Johto region) is a region of the Pokémon world. Johto is located west of Kanto, which together form a joint landmass that is south of Sinnoh and Sinjoh Ruins. It was the second core series region to be introduced. First explored in Pokémon Gold and Silver, it is home to an additional 100 Pokémon that were not present in the previous games. It is also the setting of Pokémon Crystal, Pokémon HeartGold, and Pokémon SoulSilver. Players begin their journey in New Bark Town, where Professor Elm offers either Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile to beginning Pokémon Trainers. The English-version names of most of the cities in Johto are names of plants or things related to plants. Junichi Masuda has stated in his director's column that the kanji that inspired the name mean "castle capital" (城都) or "lattice-plan capital" (条都)[1]; this meaning is connected to the city of Nara, which was the basis for Violet City. Johto is based on the real Kansai region in Japan. Kansai and Kantō are the two most populous areas of Honshū, the largest island of Japan, and much like Johto and Kanto, represent a harmony of contrasting cultures living together. Compared to modern Kantō, Kansai is linked to the past, and known for its historical temples, shrines, palaces, gardens, and architecture. Kyoto, which is the basis for Ecruteak City, is considered the cultural center of Japan; although Osaka, which is the basis for Goldenrod City, is typically modern.
The Hoenn region (Japanese: ホウエン地方 Hoenn region) is a region of the Pokémon world. It is located south of Sinnoh, and southwest of both Kanto and Johto. It is the setting of Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire. It was the third core series region to be introduced. Hoenn is inspired by the real-world Japanese main island of Kyushu. The names of most of the cities in Hoenn are made of two words put together ("Little Root", "Fort Tree", "Slate Port", "Ever Grande", etc.) rather than colors or plants as Kanto and Johto had done. Professor Birch of Littleroot Town offers the first partner Pokémon known as Treecko, Torchic, or Mudkip to Trainers beginning their journey of this vast land. Junichi Masuda has stated that Hoenn's name signifies "abundant relations" (豊縁 hōen), as a common theme in this region is the relationships forged between Pokémon and people. Main article: Pokémon world in relation to the real world → Hoenn The Hoenn region is based on the real-world Japanese main island of Kyushu, rotated 90° counterclockwise. Junichi Masuda stated that the reason Kyushu was rotated 90° to create Hoenn was to increase playability. According to the Pokémon Omega Ruby & Pokémon Alpha Sapphire: Super Music Collection, Masuda further clarifies that this choice was related to the horizontal display of the new Game Boy Advance screen.
The Sinnoh region (Japanese: シンオウ地方 Sinnoh region), formerly known as Hisui (Japanese: ヒスイ地方 Hisui region), is a region of the Pokémon world. It is located north of Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn. It is the setting of Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl, and Legends: Arceus; the latter explores the region's earlier history when it was still known as Hisui. It was the fourth core series region to be introduced. Sinnoh is composed of the large mainland, the Battle Zone on another landmass to the northeast, and several smaller islands on both sides of the region. Most of Sinnoh's routes are on land, having very few water routes, in vast contrast to Hoenn. The region is divided by Mount Coronet, roughly comparable to how the continent that Kanto and Johto make up is essentially a contiguous region. The geography of the Sinnoh region is based on the geography of the Japanese island of Hokkaido and the southern part of the Russian island Sakhalin, as well as Kunashir, which is claimed by Japan, but administered by Russia. Sinnoh has been said to be an island like Hoenn, rather than a peninsula. Most of the cities and towns in Sinnoh are based on and positioned in the same way as the real cities and towns of Hokkaido. Jubilife City is Sinnoh's largest city, which is based on Sapporo, Hokkaido's largest city, while Veilstone City is based upon Abashiri, a major port city. The geographical features of Sinnoh are similar as well, with the large mountain ranges of Mount Coronet resembling the Ezo mountain chain, which is made up of the Teshio Mountains, the Kitami Mountains, the Ishikari Mountains, the Yubari Mountains, and the Hidaka Mountains. The three lakes of Sinnoh mimic Lake Tōya, Lake Kussharo and Lake Kutcharo. The fourth lake of Sinnoh is similar to Lake Mashū, which is also known as a mysterious spot that has a dense layer of fog hiding the surface most of the time. The numbering of the routes in the Pokémon world may also be a reference to Japan's own national route system, which goes from 1 to 58, then skips directly to 101, and then skips several more numbers. Routes in Sinnoh do not run concurrent to routes in Hokkaido; instead starting over after the set of routes in Hoenn.
The Unova region (Japanese: イッシュ地方 Issyu region) is a region of the Pokémon world. It is the setting of Pokémon Black and White and Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, while a school in Unova called Blueberry Academy was introduced as the setting of The Indigo Disk expansion of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. It was the fifth core series region to be introduced. Unova is stated to be far away from Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh; the Pokémon which inhabit Unova are diverse and different from those of other regions. According to Junichi Masuda, the geographical and social background for Unova draws inspiration from the New York City metropolitan area. Although it is geographically based on New York City, it draws inspiration for its landmarks from the entire state of New York, which features a mixture of rural locations and urban areas as well as factory towns and industrial complexes. The region also has several cultural references to the country where this state is located, the United States of America. Unova's Japanese name, イッシュ Issyu, is derived from the Japanese word for "one variety", 一種 isshu, or 1種類 isshurui. According to the game director Masuda, this is to express that although the region is diverse in species and race, they are all the same as living creatures when seen from a distance.[3] The region's English name contains the Spanish word uno (one),[4] and possibly also the English word united (as in the United States) and the Latin words unum (one) and nova (new). The name also sounds like parts of the phrase "United States of America". Although some of Unova is geographically based on New York, the creators of the region took some liberties in regards to the surrounding areas. One of the largest cities in Unova, Castelia City, is based on Lower Manhattan, but to the immediate north of Castelia is (as opposed to a continuing metropolis as in real life) a vast desert. Nimbasa City, which is to the north of Castelia City, could be a reference to Broadway, which is located in Manhattan. Nacrene City, with its restored storehouses, is reminiscent of the ubiquitous lofts in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The division of Unova may also be a reference to the Boroughs of New York City. The Skyarrow Bridge is a reference to the Brooklyn Bridge, which connects Brooklyn and Manhattan. The Battle Subway is a reference to the New York City Subway, which is the most extensive public transit system in the world, as well as one of the oldest.
The Kalos region (Japanese: カロス地方 Kalos region) is a region of the Pokémon world. It was the sixth core series region to be introduced and is the setting of Pokémon X and Y and Pokémon Legends: Z-A. It is shaped like a five-pointed star, with one of its biggest cities being Lumiose City in the north-central part of the region. It features a vast network of rivers and waterways snaking through much of its landscape, cities and towns. North-east of Lumiose City lies a mountain range where more frigid temperatures exist, extending down into the plains below. Western Kalos features a vast ocean, where the shoreside city of Shalour City lies in the middle of a cove. According to Junichi Masuda, Kalos's name is derived from the Greek word κάλλος kállos, meaning beauty. Kalos is based on France; specifically, it most closely resembles the northern half of Metropolitan France. According to Junichi Masuda, France was chosen as a basis for Kalos because the development team considered it a good fit for Pokémon X and Y's theme of "beauty".
The Alola region (Japanese: アローラ地方 Alola region) is a region of the Pokémon world. It was the seventh core series region to be introduced and is the setting of Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon. Alola is made up of four islands: Melemele Island, Akala Island, Ula'ula Island, and Poni Island. In the center is an artificial island by the name of Aether Paradise. It is a popular resort destination and attracts a lot of tourists from other regions. In Alola, humans and Pokémon coexist in a very close relationship, and a culture has developed that is different from other regions. The island kahuna of each island is known to offer the first partner Pokémon to Trainers beginning their journey of this archipelago. In gameplay, the kahuna of Melemele Island, Hala, will offer the options of Rowlet, Litten, and Popplio to beginner Trainers in Sun and Moon, while in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Professor Kukui of Hau'oli City Outskirts will offer the same three Pokémon under Hala's behalf. According to Shigeru Ohmori, the name "Alola" is meant to incorporate a meaning of a land that overflows with life force and supports various forms of life. Specifically, the name may come from ola (Hawaiian for life) and the traditional Hawaiian word aloha, which, beyond its use as a greeting, also signifies a respect and love for the shared life force between all. This etymology is likely also shared by the Alolan greeting and parting "alola". The adjectival form of Alola is "Alolan", as seen in the term Alolan form. Alola is based on the Hawaiian Islands, an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean which is home to Hawaii, a state of the United States. Each of Alola's natural islands is based on one of the Hawaiian Islands: Melemele Island is based on the real-world Hawaiian island Oʻahu. Akala Island is based on the real-world Hawaiian island Maui. Ula'ula Island is based on the real-world Hawaiian island Hawaiʻi (the Big Island). Poni Island is based on the real-world Hawaiian island Kauaʻi. Each natural island in Alola is associated with a color, which corresponds with the official color designation for their real-world counterparts. Each island is also named after the Hawaiian word for their associated color. The colors also correspond with the nectar and flowers available on said island, as well as each island's guardian deity.
The Galar region (Japanese: ガラル地方 Galar region) is a region of the Pokémon world, and the eighth core series region to be introduced. It is the setting of Pokémon Sword and Shield. Galar may have been derived from gallant, gala (a special occasion), or Galahad. It may also come from an anagram of San-Graal, the French name of the Holy Grail. Another possible etymology may be galar, Irish and Scottish Gaelic for "disease," in reference to either Dynamax and Eternatus or one of Britain's nicknames, Blighty. Galar is based on the United Kingdom. According to Shigeru Ohmori, the UK is chosen as a basis for Galar to tie into Pokémon Sword and Shield's theme of "strength", and the idea of aiming to be the greatest or the strongest. The main part of Galar focuses heavily on the island of Great Britain, especially England and (to a lesser extent) Wales. However, the orientation of the landmass is rotated 180° compared to real-world Great Britain: for example, northern Galar is based on southern England. The parts of Galar introduced in the Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass are based on other parts of the UK: the Isle of Armor is based on the Isle of Man, a self-governing crown dependency of the United Kingdom, and the Crown Tundra is based on Scotland.
The Paldea region (Japanese: パルデア地方 Paldea region) is a region of the Pokémon world, and the ninth core series region to be introduced. It is the setting of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's base game, though players leave Paldea and go to Kitakami and the Unova region's Blueberry Academy during The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero. Paldea may be derived from pal (friend or ally) or paideia (education or learning) and aldea, the Spanish word for village or hamlet. Paldea is based on the Iberian Peninsula — which comprises Spain, Portugal, and Andorra — and its shared culture and fauna. It draws inspiration primarily from the culture of Spain, as can be seen in its architecture, gastronomy, musical influences, Pokémon nomenclature, as well as the sporadic use of the Spanish language by the locals of Paldea. Specific references to Portugal, its architecture and language can also be found mainly on western locations of Paldea. The Hisui region (Japanese: ヒスイ地方 Hisui region) refers to Sinnoh as it was known during its discovery and settlement, in a historical period set prior to Generation IV. It is the setting of Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Hisui may be derived from 翡翠 hisui (jade) or 秘邃 hisui (hidden and profound), the latter of which matches Sinnoh's name origin. Hisui may be based on the Japanese island of Hokkaido while it was still known as Ezo, referring to its inhabitants prior to the Meiji Restoration. In 1869, the northern frontier was renamed to its current administrative title, which translates to northern sea circuit.
Roxanne Personality She is a Rock-type Gym Leader and specializes in Rock Type Pokémon. She is an honors student at the Trainers' School and a proud, skillful Gym Leader who loves rocks and fossils. She loves rocks and loves the Pokémon Trainer's School. During her pre-battle conversation, she tells the player that she practices what she learns from school. This hints that she is a studious type of sorts, and is proud of her abilities to turn knowledge into power.
Flannery Personality Flannery is impulsive and spirited, and is inexperienced since she hasn't been a Gym Leader for long. Flannery's lack in practice is compensated with charisma and ambition. In her dialogue prior to being battled in the Generation III games, Flannery is seen improvising intimidating rhetoric towards the player, but after losing to them in a battle, she admits fault. Flannery likes to battle a lot, especially the battles where she can test her fire Pokémon against stronger opponent. She is a passionate trainer and a challenging Gym Leader.
Winona Personality Winona has a kind and caring personality, especially of those dear to her, and believes the best lifestyle is to coexist with nature. She is a woman of grace, and although specializes in Flying types, prefers bird Pokémon. She is focused on the refinement in battles and respects Trainers who are both graceful and strong. Sometimes, she speaks in a discontinuous way, owing to contemplating her own choice of words. Winona has the ability to read the wind's directions. Winona has a great love for Flying-type Pokémon and all her actions resemble the elegance of flying type Pokémon. She loves people who like Flying-type Pokémon.
Gardenia Personality Gardenia is a quirky and friendly trainer, who gets giddy whenever she comes across Grass-type Pokémon. Although she has a bubbly personality, her past may suggest she's a lot more complex than initially believed. Her connection with the Old Chateau has yet remained a mystery. Gardenia has a friendly and caring personality. She sees every good thing as a flower. She loves plants and the nature and hates anyone who hurts the nature. She likes to battle with her Grass-type Pokémon, especially Roserade.
Maylene Personality Like others of her type specialty, Maylene is a determined trainer with a strong conviction towards her martial arts training. For what she lacks in muscle, Maylene has the spirit and fairness of a true fighter. Surprisingly for such a petite figure, she eats large portions of food. Maylene is passionate and sturdy. She works hard with her fighting Pokémon. She is quick in defending herself. However, she has a sweet side where she likes to make friends as well.
Fantina Personality Eccentric, glamourous, stylish and highly refined. Fantina is a lady of talent, who is not only a trainer but also a great judge of character. She represents the lavish lifestyle of a French model, though she isn't snobbish about it. At times she includes French in her sentences, and enjoys quizzing her challengers before battle.
Candice Personality Candice is a very sociable trainer and a bit of an oddball to say the least, breaking the stereotype of ice-type trainers being cold and untouchable. Her choice of clothing given her type specialty, may suggest she enjoys the cold a little too much. Embracing her youthful appearance, Candice is cheerful, happy-go-lucky and warmhearted among her peers, and has a fervent passion on focusing on doing things she loves, such as Pokémon battling, trends and romance. Candice has a cheerful and sweet personality. She befriends people and Pokémon easily and is always ‘chilled as ice’. She feels that Ice Pokémon are very calm and collected but are dangerous at the same time.
Zinnia Personality Zinnia could be considered one of the most unusual characters in the franchise, mainly because of her depth and her mysterious and tragic history. This has been seen before in characters like N or AZ; however, unlike them, she is unable to achieve a happy ending. She has a somewhat crazy and overactive imagination, appearing mainly in her pre-battle animation and during her talks with the player character. She is always able to laugh even in sad moments, such as when she remembers the true Aster on the roof of the Sky Pillar. As the Lorekeeper, Zinnia is a traditionalist and has peculiar morals. She sticks to her course, doing what she believes is right, no matter what others say or do. She can also be reckless, manipulating Team Aqua and Magma to resurrect Kyogre and Groudon to battle and lure Rayquaza to destroy a Meteor, ignorant of the fact her actions nearly destroyed the Earth. She also showed a callous indifference to the lives she endangered in the process. Despite her flamboyant personality, Zinnia has a great sense of responsibility and exceedingly great emotional strength, considering matters like the meteorite as something only she should handle. Feeling like a prisoner of her own destiny as Lorekeeper, having to bear the burden of protecting the world many years ago, but above all, having to deal with the death of Aster is what makes Zinnia a melancholic character. Although she broke free from bearing the burden of a Lorekeeper, nothing in the world will be able to bring back Aster, making her one of the few characters with a tragic ending. Following the Delta Episode, Zinnia leaves the Hoenn region with her Whismur, in search of a new goal to pursue.
Wicke Personality The assistant branch chief of Aether Paradise has a caring personality, so she's loved by all the Aether Foundation employees. As it was later revealed by Lillie, when Gladion left, Lusamine became insane and Wicke acted like an actual caring mother to Lillie. She was also suspicious of Nihilego's poison, and threw away her share of the poison, along with Faba.
Shauna Personality Shauna has a sunny, optimistic demeanor. A happy-go-lucky girl, she's upbeat and smiles often, with an energetic and bubbly side to match. She wants to treasure the friendships and memories she makes and has a somewhat carefree attitude, though she can occasionally be a little ditzy. This can be seen early on in her adventure, as she gets amazed when hearing about how Pokémon go inside Poké Balls. She can also be childish and likes to accentuate her speech. Despite this, she can sometimes get pouty or even feel a little shy, as can be seen when she watches fireworks with the player.
Solana Personality While the playable version of Solana has no spoken dialogue, her personality can readily be seen through her actions and the dialogue of NPCs. Personality wise, Solana is energetic, driven, and has a courageous heart. She is selfless and will readily do anything to uphold her duty as a Ranger, even if it means putting herself at risk. She is also a talented writer and is very good at expressing herself through letters. The NPC version of Solana is much the same, aside from the fact that her personality can actually be seen through her dialogue. Her personality could also be interpreted to vary from her NPC version, as like all protagonists the player can insert their own personality into Solana.
Lillie Personality Lillie is a mysterious girl who assists the professor for personal reasons. She's not fond of making Pokémon fight in battles, but she loves reading and has devoured many books. Lillie was revealed to have taken a Cosmog from her mother, and along with Kukui and Burnet are studying the Cosmog and its secrets. Lillie loves to shop and read books. When she is traveling with the player character, she is usually exclaiming to do some shopping of her own, and in cities would tell the player character that she got lost and ended up buying outfits in a shop. Lillie is always getting lost, and the player character has to help her. This happens usually because Lillie is trying to avoid Team Skull grunts, as she is not a trainer, and ended up going in the wrong directions trying to get away from them. Lillie originally had a close relationship with her mother, as she mentioned sleeping in Lusamine's bed as a child. However, over time, Lusamine started becoming insane and grew even madder when Gladion escaped Aether Foundation two years before the story begins. She became unbearable to Lillie, so she left as well. When the player character and Lillie meet Lusamine in Ultra Space, she gets the courage to yell at Lusamine for being terrible for trying to control her and stating that "children are not just things that belong to their parents". After Lusamine gets separated from Nihilego, she regains some of her sanity back and touches Lillie's cheek. Lillie eventually decides to travel to Kanto to find Bill so that he may give her the cure for Nihilego's poison. Lillie also decides to go to Kanto to become a true Pokémon Trainer so that she may earn badges and meet and catch lots of wonderful Pokémon.
Lorelei Personality Confident and professional, Lorelei may look like a Librarian or Secretary. But deep down she's a child at heart, as evidence to her hobby of collecting dolls, meaning that she seems to have a habit of treasuring the past (or at least children's toys). Lorelei has a friendly personality but she is serious in case of Pokémon Battles and shows no mercy to the opponent. She fights with all of her focus.
Lenora Personality Lenora is a very strong and capable middle-aged woman. She is the type to keep her word on things, judging by her relationship with her husband. Lenora prefers to be the assertive one between them. As seen by her study, she is quite organized and neat.
Elesa Personality Elesa is initially portrayed to be a very calm and stoic character. However, she is self-conscious about people's perceptions of her, and believes that others probably do not think she is a fun-loving person due to her stunningly good looks. Much like the other Gym Leaders of her type, Elesa prefers to show off her skills with a sense of style and a performance to accompany it. Additionally, Elesa has a fondness for bad puns. This is capitalized on in Pokémon Masters, where she makes a variety of Pokémon based puns.
Skyla Personality Skyla is a bubbly and outgoing type of Trainer, she enjoys a good battle and meeting others. However she can come off as a little airheaded, though even in close defeat she still remains optimistic whether she wins or loses. Skyla has a brave and strong personality but she is charismatic at the same time. When she fights, she gives it all. She believes that one should "never give up".
Iris Personality Iris is a tomboyish, hyper young girl who loves adventure. She has an affinity for Dragon-type Pokémon and loves to train and play with them. She is a kind, helpful person who will bravely stand up against evil forces and help the player. Iris is a passionate, tough trainer who looks forward to learn more about Dragon-type Pokémon. She greatly appreciates Clair, Lance and Cynthia and considers them her idols. She likes to make friends and spend time with them.
Roxie Personality Punkish and rebellious, Roxie befits the stereotype of a typical Rocker. She is a passionate musician, who enjoys her band very much. Interestingly, her choice of Pokémon type suites various real life rock songs and themes for example "Poison" sung by famous singer, Alice Cooper. She is shown to be rather determined and stubborn, as she was adamant in forcing her father to do his job as a sailor, and when she knew that he quit his sailor job to venture into Pokéstar Studios, she furiously blurted out "idiot" for eight times. However, she still cares for her father, as she comforted him after knowing that he was mocked by the audience for his movie.
Viola Personality Viola is a kind-hearted person, who sometimes helps her sister, Alexa, in journalism. Viola also loves taking pictures, being a determined photographer. Viola is a righteous person and, even if being quite hurt, does her best to protect others.
Korrina Personality Korrina is an enthusiastic girl, who sometimes acts childishly in front of her grandfather. Despite this, she actually cares for Gurkinn, as well as the Tower of Mastery and Mega Evolution successor tradition.
