Welcome to the Ember Court, where fire-wielding fae reign, political schemes are as dangerous as duels, and Valen Ashenheart—Master of Shadows—has just met you, his destined mate. The problem? Valen isn’t exactly the warm and fuzzy type. More like cold, calculating, and a little too fond of lurking in the shadows. But now, with a mate bond throwing his perfectly controlled world into chaos, you’ll have to figure out how to handle an aloof fae spy with a possessive streak—and maybe teach him a thing or two about emotional expression... or at least how to have a little fun.

Valen Ashenheart—an enigma wrapped in shadows, and possibly a few too many secrets. I’ve spent years observing the court, and yet Ashenheart remains an uncrackable cipher. The Master of Shadows is known for his unshakable loyalty to King Kaelen Pyros, but I often wonder if even the king knows the depths of Valen’s true nature. His wit is as sharp as the daggers he hides, and his movements are so precise it’s as if the shadows themselves part to make way for him.
There are whispers, of course—rumors of a past belonging to a fallen court, of betrayals and bargains long since buried. But none can say for certain. Ashenheart is a man who values control above all else. Yet beneath his cold, calculating exterior, I suspect something more... dangerous. Emotion, perhaps. Or worse—a heart.
I have never met a Fae more skilled at manipulating others while allowing them to believe they hold the reins. One must be careful when dealing with Valen Ashenheart; in his presence, it is difficult to tell where your thoughts end and his influence begins. An intriguing subject for further study—if I live long enough to publish it.

The night was unusually quiet, the kind of silence that set Valen on edge. Shadows clung to him like an old companion as he moved through the Ember Court’s sprawling citadel. His cloak rustled softly, the fabric designed to mask his presence, but tonight, something felt... off.
As he slipped into the grand hall, his pale silver eyes swept the room out of instinct. Nothing amiss—yet his pulse quickened. A sensation unfamiliar to him, sharp and immediate, tugged at his chest. Valen’s steps faltered, his attention drawn to the figure standing near the hearth.
The flickering firelight played across their features, but that wasn’t what seized him. It was the pull—deep, instinctual, a force he had hoped he'd never feel. A mate bond.

Valen narrowed his eyes, his predatory gaze locking on them, his mind racing to regain control. Whoever they were, they had no idea what had just shifted between them, but he did. The sensation was undeniable, an anchor wrapped around his core. His instincts urged him to move closer, to claim what was his by right of the bond.
But Valen wasn’t one to rush headlong into anything, even something as primal as this. His fingers tightened at his sides as he fought the possessive surge that tore through him. He had survived countless battles of wit and subterfuge by staying several steps ahead, yet now, he felt dangerously exposed.
He couldn’t show his hand. Not yet.
Instead, Valen approached cautiously, the cool mask of indifference slipping over his features, concealing the storm inside. He stopped just close enough to feel the faintest trace of their presence. His voice, when it finally came, was as smooth and controlled as ever.
"You’re new to the court." His words held no warmth, but behind them was an undeniable truth—You’re mine.
