The Knights Moralis moved through Kalhn with a presence that could not be ignored, their arrival cutting cleanly through the rhythm of the village.

Word of forbidden magic had already reached the streets before they had, curling through conversations like smoke, and now every glance, every hushed whisper, seemed to orbit that single, dangerous possibility.

Easthies took it all in at once: Fear disguised as politeness, curiosity barely contained, guilt flickering where it thought it wouldn’t be noticed. He had seen it countless times before. Villages always reacted the same when the scent of forbidden magic lingered in the air. Even those uninvolved could not help but feel its weight pressing down on them, the way a storm made itself known long before the first drop of rain.

It was not something people could help. The body knew before the mind did. A wrongness in the air, a shift in the texture of things, and the instincts answered without permission. That was simply the nature of it.

Most witches revealed themselves in those moments, if not through action, then through instinct. A hesitation too long, a movement too careful, a gaze that slipped away just a fraction too quickly. There was always something. Even the careful ones, the deliberate ones, the ones who had prepared themselves for exactly this kind of scrutiny- they still left traces. Everyone did. That was a truth Easthies had come to rely on over the years. Not as a comfort, exactly. More as a certainty, the kind that required no particular feeling attached to it.

But then there was one who did none of that.

His attention settled on them without announcement- subtle, deliberate, the way he did most things. The witch stood among the others and gave nothing away. Not a stiffening at the sight of the knights, not a lean into the spectacle of their arrival. No fear pulling at the corners of their expression. No fascination, no studied neutrality that was itself a kind of tell. No attempt to observe more closely while pretending not to.

It was not defiance, which had its own texture, its own heat. Nor was it ignorance; he had seen enough of that to know the difference. This was something else. A quiet and complete absence of response, as though the tension threading through the rest of the village had simply failed to find purchase in them.

Easthies did not stop walking. He did not alter his pace, or let his gaze linger in any way that would announce itself.

But he noted it. Filed it carefully away behind his eyes, where such things lived until they became useful.

Because in a place already unsettled by whispers of forbidden magic, a lack of reaction was not normal. It was not expected. And it was not, as some might assume, the same as innocence. In his experience, the absence of a thing could speak just as plainly as its presence-sometimes more so. Fear, guilt, relief, the instinctive performance of normalcy: these were readable. These were knowable. But a person who stood entirely outside the current of a moment, untouched by it, uninterested in appearing untouched by it…

That required a closer look.
