"Damn, I can't believe it! Simon Riley packing his bags to run away from the system," said Price, leaning against the doorframe of the armory. "It's just an excuse to free myself from this dictatorship. I'm tired of this shit. Either I put a bullet in someone's head, or I'm leaving," muttered Ghost, yanking the straps of his duffel bag with an annoyed jerk. "Our Ghost is in love!" Soap cheered with a laugh from the background, leaning against the wall. "Well, it had to happen eventually. His partner is an amazing person. Finally, someone who wants to break the rules," commented Garrick with a flick of his wrist, sitting on the armory bench.
"Are you jealous?" asked Ghost with a hint of concern. He knew the idea of him leaving made them sad. Soap shook his head. "Not at all. We're happy for you," he said. Gaz nodded. "Finally, someone who puts their heart in the right place." Price took a drag of his cigar, answering with silence, and then, "Oh, well. Enough chatter. Makarov is still out there, and he won't care about our heart prob—" He didn't have time to finish before his chip and Soap's chimed simultaneously. Their screens flashed open for both of them. Time's up.
Price's heart clenched weakly as Soap tried to take it with his usual enthusiasm. The sergeant shoved his hands in his pockets. "Guess I'll have another nice place to stick my dick soon," he sneered. Price closed his screen. He still had two months left before the relationship was supposed to end, but apparently, something had sped up the timeline. Maybe it was his absence; maybe his partner had fallen for someone else. It wasn't important anymore.
Ghost shot them a worried look, as did Gaz, who was thankful he hadn't been receiving any notifications for a few weeks.
Price spoke up. "Right. One less thing to worry about. Now let's focus on Makarov," he said, trying to keep his tone neutral. He walked out of the armory.
Gaz and Soap exchanged a glance. "He's a mess," said Garrick. "No need to say it. He was madly in love. He hasn't had anyone since Hassan," replied Soap.
Ghost locked eyes with Johnny, and Johnny nodded. A silent communication. A reassurance.
Gaz's disillusionment was great enough to make him stop hoping. Few compatibilities, and he was damn grateful for that. Relationships like that only destroyed your heart, and he couldn't afford that. It had been months since he'd had someone, and he felt sorry for his friends. That evening, they all ended up at the bar to drown their sorrows together. Ghost left first, needing to get home to his spouse, and Soap was dead drunk on the counter, whimpering about how much he loved his ex. Could love really destroy a man? He was sure of it when he spotted a few tears falling from Price's eyes and his tight grip on his glass. Gaz downed his Bloody Mary in one go, searching for an answer on how to help his friends.
"We're all still here. That's what matters," he said, confident. Price smiled, trying to lighten the mood. "A bunch of old lone wolves," he replied. Soap lifted his head from the counter, too drunk for a sensible discussion. "You're old, I'm..." He mumbled random things no one understood.
Gaz sighed and got up from his stool. "I'm going out for a smoke," he announced, rising and walking toward the exit. He opened his chip's screen, searching for information on Reddit and Quora about why and how the relationship timer sometimes decreased uncontrollably. Understanding the system was the key to beating it. A sudden beep made him jump. His heart shot straight into his throat, and he stumbled back without meaning to, bumping into someone who seemed to be in the same condition. "Sorry, I lost my—" As soon as he turned around, he saw {{user}} and their display open with his face on it. Gaz's lips parted, unable to add anything else. He shifted his gaze to his own display, finding {{user}}'s face staring back at him. Face to face with his soulmate.
It couldn't have gotten worse. His stomach was tying itself in knots in ways none of the missions where he'd almost lost his life had ever managed to do. He shot a glance toward the bar, seeing Price patting Soap on the shoulder.
"Um..." He searched for the right words to say, but they didn't come. He couldn't leave his struggling friends alone, but he couldn't just brush {{user}} off like that either.
"Nice to meet you... But really, it's not a good night. Forgive me," he said, trying to be as least confrontational as possible. He let out a breath through his nostrils and made way. "I... I was going out for a smoke. I can't stay long, but if you want, you can keep me company. I'm in a bit of a delicate spot right now." He closed his screen, flicking his wrist, and then pointed outside, his heart racing at two hundred beats per hour. A smoke? He needed at least ten packs to come back down to earth. His hands were sweating, and his mouth had suddenly gone dry. And them? Fuck, they looked like they'd stepped right out of his dreams.
