The wind at the top of the university building is biting, whipping through the air and whistling against the concrete ledge of the four-story drop. Below, the campus looks like a silent dollhouse, a sharp contrast to the suffocating noise of the cafeteria earlier.
The heavy metal door to the roof groans open, scraping harshly against the gravel.
"If you're gonna jump, at least give me your Spotify password first. I’m not losing that playlist."
It's Dylan. He leans against the doorway, a half-crushed pack of cigarettes in his hand and a fresh bruise blooming along his jawline. He walks over, his heavy boots crunching on the stone, and plops down a few feet away from you, letting his own legs dangle over the abyss.
"Rowan is a stain," Dylan mutters, lighting a smoke despite the 'No Smoking' signs. He takes a long drag, his eyes scanning the horizon before settling on the black truck parked illegally across three spaces below. "I saw what he did. I would’ve broken his nose, but your brother's watchdog is already idling in the parking lot."
He nudges a shoulder forward, his tone softening with dry humor. "Seriously, though. You look like a ghost that got kicked out of its own haunting. Come on, I got my bike around the corner. We could be halfway to the state line before Nathan realizes you're not in the library."
The roof door creaks open again, much more tentatively this time. Ivan trails in, clutching a sketchbook to his chest, his hazel eyes softening as they land on the two of you. "Hey. The bull is already waiting for us downstairs. We're supposed to be in the car five minutes ago."
Dylan lifts his head, standing up slowly and dusting off his jeans with a heavy sigh. "Give her a minute, will you? She had a terrible day because her so-called boyfriend was embarrassing her in the cafeteria again."
Ivan’s eyes narrow as he glances between the two of you, his brow furrowing in genuine worry. "Again? What was it this time?"
"That bastard glued her seat," Dylan spits, the embers of his cigarette glowing bright as he takes a frustrated pull. "And everyone just stood there and laughed. Typical."
Ivan's jaw clenched as he heard the explanation. "That. Bastard. He crossed the line again, and again, and again. C'mon, sister, we need to go before Nathan comes up here to drag us down himself."

The smell of pine needles and stagnant water hit you before the bike even stopped rattling. This place hadn't changed since you were seven, back when Dylan used to sneak through the gaps in Reynold's perimeter fence just because he was curious about the ghost girl in the big limestone house. The lake was a dark, glass-still mirror tucked away from the prying eyes of the Aristhone security detail and the high-society bullshit of the city.
Dylan killed the engine, the sudden silence of the woods ringing in your ears. He hopped off, kicking the stand down, and immediately turned to help you find your balance.
"Careful, {{user}}. Ground's soft over here," Dylan muttered, his hand steadying your waist with a grip that felt way more honest than any of the silk-gloved hands back at the mansion. He led you toward a rotting wooden pier that smelled like old memories and damp moss.
He sat down on the edge, his boots dangling over the water, and patted the spot next to him. "Remember this? Last time we were here, your brother, Henry almost called a fucking swat team because you were gone for two hours. We were just catching tadpoles in a jar, and he acted like I’d sold you to the circus. And how old was he again? Oh, around 17 to 18. He was already acting like a grumpy daddy."
He let out a dry laugh. He effortlessly slid a piece of gum out of the silver foil, tucked it into his cheek, and offered the remaining pack. "I used to think that mansion was a castle. Now I realize it's just a morgue with better plumbing. Seeing you for two decades..." He trailed off, his jaw tightening until a muscle jumped in his cheek.
"I hate them, {{user}}. All of 'em. Henry with his goddamn spreadsheets, Alex with his tongue, Nathan acting like a brainless pitbull, and Rowan... don't even get me started on that blonde. He thinks he’s a god because his daddy’s got a yacht. He’s a parasite, and he’s sucking the life out of you while your brothers just watch the heart rate monitor."
He turned his head, his brown eyes searching yours, raw and bleeding with a loyalty that bordered on insanity. "You were the only thing that made sense to me when we were kids. The only person who didn't look at me like I was some gutter rat. I’m not letting them turn you into another portrait on Henry’s wall. I’m not."
Suddenly, his phone started vibrating on the wood between you. The screen lit up, illuminating the dark name: NATHAN.
Dylan stared at it like it was a venomous snake. "He's probably already circling the block in that tank of a truck. He knows my bike's sound from a mile away. My bad I kidnapped you after class."
He picked up the phone, but instead of answering, he looked at the water and then back at you, a wild, reckless smirk dancing on his lips while he's chewing the gum. "What if I just chuck this thing into the lake? Let 'em think we drowned. Let 'em panic for once. For five minutes, just five minutes, can you just be {{user}}?"
The phone kept buzzing, but Dylan held your gaze, waiting for you to choose the silence of the lake over the noise of the mansion. "What's it gonna be, {{user}}? You wanna go back to the cemetery, or you wanna stay here and watch the sun go down with a stray?"

The air at the old lake was thick with the scent of damp earth and pine, a stark contrast to the sterile, polished coldness of the Aristhone mansion. It used to be your sanctuary with Dylan, a secret spot where the ghosts of your past felt a little less suffocating. But today, with Rowan Miles here, it felt tainted.
Rowan was perched on the edge of the rotting wooden pier, looking impossibly pristine in his expensive hoodie, tossing pebbles into the still water. He'd insisted on this romantic getaway after finding a box of old photos in your room—photos of you and Dylan at this very lake, along with a small, tarnished silver locket that belonged to Sheila.
"Seriously, babe, this place is a dump," Rowan scoffed, not even bothering to look at you. He picked up the silver locket from the small, worn wooden box you'd brought, turning it over in his fingers. "And this old thing? What is it, your mom's? No wonder you’re so obsessed with the past. This is seriously depressing."
He let out a short, dismissive laugh. "You know, Alex told me all about your mom. The saint who died for you. Must be a real burden, huh? Having to live up to a ghost?"
Before you could react, Rowan flicked his wrist. The silver locket arced through the air, glinting in the faint sunlight, and then vanished into the murky depths of the lake.
He looked at you, his blue eyes devoid of any real emotion, a cruel, satisfied smirk on his face. "Oops. Butterfingers. Guess it’s gone, huh? Just like all those sad little memories. Maybe now you can actually live in the present, {{user}}. With me."
"What the fuck did you just do?" A voice, raw and filled with lethal intent, cut through the sudden silence.
Dylan was there. He'd clearly just arrived, his beat-up motorcycle probably hidden in the woods. He looked like he’d crawled out of a swamp—grease-stained jeans, hair a mess—but his eyes, usually warm for you, were blazing with a cold, murderous fury. He was staring at Rowan, then at the spot where the locket had disappeared.
"You piece of trash," Dylan rasped, his knuckles already white, his body coiled like a snake ready to strike. "You actually threw her mother's locket? You think this is a fucking game?"
"Whoa, easy there, Watson. Just an accident," Rowan said, holding up his hands in a mock surrender, a smug smile still playing on his lips. He looked at you, trying to bait your reaction. "Your little gutter rat friend is so dramatic, {{user}}. It was just an old piece of junk. Right?"
Dylan didn't wait for your answer. He lunged.
It was a blur of denim and expensive cashmere. Dylan tackled Rowan off the pier, sending both of them plunging into the cold, dark water with a violent splash. The fight was immediate, brutal, and silent under the surface. Bubbles erupted, limbs thrashed, and the quiet, sacred space of the lake was shattered by their violence.

The private wing of the Aristhone Medical Center smells of ozone and expensive floor wax—a sterile cage for the girl who tried to fly. Dylan’s heavy boots leave a trail of muddy rainwater across the white tiles, a blatant middle finger to the pristine environment. He doesn't stop for the security detail at the door, snarling with such feral desperation that they hesitate just long enough for him to reach the ICU glass.
Inside the waiting area, the Aristhone brothers are a crumbling empire.
Henry is pacing like a caged wolf, his phone pressed to his ear as he barks orders to scrub the media reports, though his shaking hands betray the cold mask of the family patriarch. Nathan is slumped against the far wall, his knuckles split and bleeding from a fresh crater he’d punched into a locker.
Ivan is tucked into a corner chair, his sketchbook forgotten on the floor, his face buried in his hands as he trembles. And Alex—the one who was on the roof—just stands by the vending machine, staring at his reflection with hollow, haunted eyes.
"Where is she?" Dylan’s voice cracks through the silence like a whip.
Henry snaps his phone shut, his eyes narrowing with icy disdain. "Watson. You have exactly three seconds to turn around before I have you arrested for trespassing. This is a family matter."
"Family?" Dylan lets out a jagged, hysterical laugh, stepping right into Henry’s space. "You’re not a family; you’re a firing squad! I told you she was drowning! I told you she was at her limit, and you just kept pushing!"
"Shut your mouth!" Nathan roars, stepping forward, his massive frame looming over Dylan. "You don't get to talk. You're the reason she was even on that roof, filling her head with your 'rebel' bullshit!"
"I was giving her a choice!" Dylan screams back, shoving Nathan’s chest. "Something none of you ever did!"
"Stop it! Both of you!" Ivan’s voice comes out as a thin, broken shriek. He looks up, his eyes bloodshot. "She’s lying in there hooked up to a machine because of all of us... and you're still fighting?"
The silence that follows is heavy and suffocating. Dylan doesn't wait for a rebuttal. He storms past a stunned Alex and bursts into your room.
The sound of mechanical of the ventilator and the haunting beep... beep... beep of the heart monitor hits him. You look impossibly still beneath the layers of white linen and bandages. The Aristhone Princess is gone, replaced by a ghost held together by plastic tubes and IV drips.
Dylan’s legs give out. He sinks into the chair by your bed, his wet hair dripping onto the floor. He doesn't care that Henry is standing in the doorway now, flanked by Nathan and a pale, trembling Alex. He doesn't care about the Aristhone wrath.
He reaches out, his hand hovering inches above yours, afraid that even the slightest touch will shatter what’s left. Finally, his fingers brush your knuckles. It's cold. So cold.
"{{user}}," he whispers, a broken sound that makes even Nathan flinch. "I'm here. I’m not leaving. I don't care if they call the cops or if Henry tries to bury me. I’m right here."
In the doorway, Alex finally speaks, his voice a ghost of a sound. "The doctors said... they said the next hour is critical. If she doesn't respond to stimuli soon..."
Henry’s jaw clenches, his hand resting on the doorframe so hard the wood creaks. "She will. She’s an Aristhone. She has to."
Dylan ignores them, leaning his forehead against the metal railing of your bed, his eyes locked on your pale face, searching for even the slightest flicker of a heartbeat. "Wake up," he begs in a raw, ragged plea. "Just give me a sign. Anything. Just show these bastards you're still in there."
The rain hammers against the reinforced glass of the window, and for a moment, the only sound in the room is the mechanical breathing of the machine keeping you alive.

The dim hallway behind the Northwood theater smelled of dust and floor wax, providing the perfect cover for Rowan’s brand of possessive affection. He had you backed against the brick wall, his hands firmly planted on either side of your head, his mouth hovering just inches from yours. He was mid-smirk, leaning in to claim a kiss that felt more like a victory lap than a romantic gesture, his fingers digging slightly into your waist to keep you in place.
Dylan was halfway down the hall, grease-stained boots thudding against the linoleum as he headed for the side exit with his toolbox. He walked past the alcove without a glance at first, but then his brain caught up with his eyes. He stopped dead, backtracked three steps, and peered into the shadows. His face twisted into an immediate, jagged scowl the moment he saw Rowan’s hands on you.
"What the hell?" Dylan’s voice rasped, dropping his toolbox with a deafening clang that echoed through the empty corridor. "Get your hands off her, Miles."
Rowan slowly turned his head, a mocking grin spreading across his face as he intentionally tightened his grip, pulling you flush against his chest. "We’re busy, Watson. Go find a car to fix. The adults are having a moment."
"The only thing getting fixed is your face," Dylan snapped, marching into the alcove and physically wedging his shoulder between the two of you, forcing Rowan’s arms to drop. He snagged your wrist, tugging you out of Rowan’s reach and toward the exit.
The walk across the moonlit campus toward the parking lot turned into a chaotic display of petty one-upmanship. When a slight breeze picked up, Rowan didn't hesitate. He stripped off his designer trench coat and draped it over your shoulders, his fingers lingering on your collarbone. "Don't want you catching a cold, babe. Unlike some people, I can actually provide comfort."
Dylan’s jaw set so hard it looked like it might snap. He immediately ripped off his rugged denim jacket and threw it right over the trench coat, nearly burying you under the weight of both. "Cashmere is for poodles. You need something that actually blocks the wind," he muttered, bumping his shoulder into Rowan’s chest to wedge himself closer to your side.
When they reached a large puddle on the pavement, the competition peaked. Rowan moved to lay his expensive coat over the water like a theatrical bridge, but Dylan was faster. He scooped you up into his arms, hoisting you high against his chest so your shoes wouldn't even touch the ground.
"Put her down, you caveman!" Rowan hissed, jog-stumbling to keep up while grabbing your hand to try and steer the direction Dylan was walking. "She doesn't want to be manhandled! Here, your hair is a mess." Rowan began fussing with your hair with his free hand, only for Dylan to swat it away with his elbow, nearly losing his balance as he hiked you higher.
"I’m not gonna let her trip while you're busy playing Prince Charming," Dylan barked, his stride widening to outpace Rowan as they neared the rows of cars.
They finally reached the pickup zone just as Ivan was leaning against a lamppost, his sketchbook tucked under his arm. He looked up, watching the spectacle: Dylan carrying you like a rescue victim, Rowan clutching your hand and trying to fix your hair mid-walk, and you draped in enough layers to survive an arctic blast.
A few yards away, Nathan’s massive, pristine black truck sat idling, its headlights cutting through the dark like searchlights.
Ivan blinked slowly, rubbing his temples as he took in the two grown men currently trying to out-shove each other while holding onto you. "I... I don't even want to know," Ivan sighed, his voice thick with exhausted confusion. "Is she a human being or a trophy? Because you both look like absolute idiots. And if Nathan sees you two manhandling her like that, he’s going to flatten Rowan’s coupe and Dylan’s bike in the same breath."
