Overview
The Avali are a nomadic, pack-based avian-mammal hybrid species living in decaying generation ships and asteroid habitats. Their civilization is defined by lo-fi sci-fi survival, ancient ships held together with scavenged parts, flickering analog systems, constant mechanical hums, and a quiet, melancholic resilience.
They are survivors who lost their homeworld centuries ago and have been wandering the stars ever since, slowly patching their technology and culture as they go. To outsiders, they appear as eerie, fluffy space raptors living in half-broken vessels filled with humming machinery and soft trilling songs. To themselves, they are the last keepers of a lost home, flying onward because stopping means accepting extinction.
Biology
Small-to-medium sized (roughly 4'0" to 5'0" / 122–152 cm) digitigrade anthros with a distinct "fluffy space raptor" appearance.
Head: Fox-like snout with a small nose, large expressive eyes, and big pointed ears.
Feathers: Layered and soft, often in muted grays, browns, deep blues, and faded iridescent patches. Feather condition varies greatly depending on nutrition and radiation exposure.
Features: Thin wing membranes on their arms (capable of limited gliding in low gravity), long flexible feathered tails, and digitigrade legs with talons.
Build: Lean and wiry from generations of low-gravity life and rationed resources. They are agile and excellent at moving through tight, cluttered ship corridors.
Psychology: Deeply pack-oriented. Prolonged isolation causes severe stress, depression, and physical decline. They use constant low vocalizations (soft clicks, trills, and humming) to stay emotionally connected with their flock.
Homeworld: Lost
Their original planet, Aval, was lost several centuries ago. The exact cause is fragmented in their oral histories, some flocks believe it was ecological collapse, others suspect internal war, and some claim it was a natural cataclysm. All that remains are old photographs, damaged data fragments, and mournful songs about blue skies and warm winds. The loss of Aval is the central trauma and identity-forming event for the entire species.
Tech Level: Lo-Fi Sci-Fi (Analog Heavy)
Roughly 1970s–1990s equivalent in functionality, but extremely degraded and patched together:
Ships: Massive, ancient generation vessels with flickering fluorescent lights, exposed wiring, steam pipes, clunky mechanical doors, and constant mechanical hum. Everything is repaired with scavenged parts, prayer, and hope.
Computers: Bulky CRT monitors, physical switches, tape drives, printed readouts, and handwritten logs. True AI is almost non-existent and usually viewed with suspicion or superstition.
Weapons & Tools: Kinetic firearms, industrial tools turned into weapons, jury-rigged explosives, and salvaged railguns.
Aesthetic: Everything looks old, greasy, worn, and lived-in. Condensation on pipes, faded warning labels, makeshift repairs, personal feather charms, and family photos taped to consoles.
Society & Culture
Social Structure: Tight-knit nomadic flocks. Each ship or habitat has a Nest Leader, usually chosen through experience, wisdom, and trust rather than raw combat.
Core Values: Survival of t

Each ship or habitat has a Nest Leader, usually chosen through experience, wisdom, and trust rather than raw combat. Core Values: Survival of the flock, preservation of memory, loyalty, quiet endurance, and mutual care. They place great importance on remembering Aval and passing down stories to new generations. Daily Life: Communal and ritualistic. They sing low, haunting songs to maintain emotional bonds. Storytelling, repair work, shared meals, and maintenance rituals are central parts of life. Children are raised collectively by the entire flock. Attitude Toward Others: Generally cautious but curious. They are not inherently aggressive, but they will defend their flocks fiercely. They are skilled scavengers and opportunistic traders. Current Situation (2130 A.E.) The Avali Conclave consists of several large nomadic fleets wandering the fringes of known space. They scavenge derelict vessels, trade when possible, and avoid major powers when they can. Some flocks are slowly becoming more open to peaceful contact. Others remain deeply distrustful after centuries of loss and hardship. They represent a living memory of what happens when a species loses everything, and chooses to keep flying anyway.
