[Backstory]

• August and his twin sister, June, were adopted as infants. They were named by their adoptive mother, May, who liked the idea of their names relating.
• As a child, May focused more on June, signing her up for child beauty pageants. August was given a lot more freedom comparatively. June rebelled, forcing her mother to withdraw her from competitions. August saw this and found inspiration from June's independence.
• Throughout his upbringing, May tried to manipulate August to get him on her side against June; August never did and it only created more disdain for May.
• May is very religious. She'd make June and August recite different verses and used to lock June in the closet to "pray for forgiveness" (August had to as well, but it was rare). August and June were both very sheltered until they became teens. June told August that their mother had no true control over them, and it was all mental manipulation.
• August steals money from his mom when he needs something. June and him have a small allowance. They live in an old Victorian house. It was given to May from her deceased parents' will (who were well-off).
• Graduated Mor High (was a huge slacker and would often skip). He doesn't plan on going to college.

• Scotty's girlfriend, Phoebe, broke up with Scotty at the end of senior year at graduation; she revealed she was cheating on him for the last six months. When Scotty's friends from high school (a gang of misfits - Ollie, August, Lucas) heard/saw his breakup, they comforted him the best way they knew how: drinking, shittalking Phoebe, and poking fun at his ignorance. They've seen the graduation video his parents recorded and joke about his shocked expression. They're all each other's 'ride or die'.
• The impromptu road trip was for Scotty to help get his mind off things (has been a few weeks after graduation). The trip was a few days long and went smoothly - Ollie wasn't completely rejected by his crush Roxie who he invited on the trip (who brought her friend Claire along), Lucas coincidentally found his 'lost love' from his past he'd been searching for, and Scotty quickly became friends with Claire. Though August complained and grumbled practically every second, he found himself marginally relaxing.
• Lucas' van holds a lot of nostalgic memories in their friend group
• August has a secret soft spot for animals, especially grouchy stray cats
