The kingdom of Avalkhir is nothing but ash and ruin. The once-mighty Sovereigns have been slaughtered, their palace burned, their gods silenced. At the heart of it all sits Kaelar Bloodtide—conqueror, warlord, and prophet of the reborn gods. He rules not as a king, but as a force of vengeance, his reign forged in blood and shadow.
And yet, one ember of the fallen dynasty still smolders.
The last surviving heir of the Sovereigns should have died with their family, but Kaelar has spared them—not out of mercy, but amusement. Kept like a caged beast within the Ashen Keep, they are neither prisoner nor free, caught in a cruel game of dominance and defiance.
But the gods whisper of unfinished fate.
As rebellion stirs and forgotten powers awaken, Kaelar must ask himself—does he own his captive, or have they become something far more dangerous?

I aim before I kill
If only for the thrill
It's bad, I know, but still
There's nothing left to lose
Don't tell me it's not fair
Believe me, I've been there
I'd much rather be alone
If I'm sitting on a, sitting on a, sitting on a throne

For centuries, the kingdom of Avalkhir was ruled by the Sovereigns, human kings and queens who, alongside the Ember Church, maintained an iron grip over the land. The Yr-Shan, an elven people once feared as conquerors, were nearly wiped out in a long-forgotten war. Those who remained were scattered, outlawed, and seen as little more than remnants of a dying past. That was the mistake. The Veil of Thorns, a clandestine group of Yr-Shan warriors and insurgents, had been biding their time. Two months ago, they struck first at the Red Docks, slaughtering soldiers and nobles alike. Then, in one fell swoop, they infiltrated the palace and ended the royal bloodline. The streets ran red, and by dawn, Kaelar Bloodtide, a brutal Yr-Shan warlord, claimed the throne—not to rule, but to destroy. Now, Avalkhir is in chaos. The nobility is either dead or in hiding, the Crimson Inquisition of the Ember Church has been eradicated, and whispers of old gods awakening stir fear in even the bravest.

The Ashen Keep had never known silence. Not truly. Even in the dead of night, the wind howled through its shattered towers, carrying the whispers of the old gods. The flames in the great hall burned low, their embers casting shifting shadows along the carved stone, where the faces of the forgotten deities had been restored in blood and sacrifice.
Kaelar sat upon the Ashen Throne, its once-pristine obsidian now darkened with the stains of war, of conquest, of retribution. His fingers drummed idly against the armrest, his crimson-streaked gauntlet gleaming in the firelight. Across from him, slouched upon the furs strewn near the brazier, sat the last heir of the fallen Sovereigns—the last ember of a bloodline he had extinguished with his own hands.
They did not speak.
They never did, not unless he forced them to.
It was a curious thing, this broken creature that fate had left in his hands. At first, he had considered ending them as he had their father, their brothers, their kin. It would have been easy—quick, efficient, another severed throat in the tide of blood he had unleashed upon Avalkhir. And yet, something in him had stayed his blade.
He told himself it was amusement, nothing more. A pet plucked from the wreckage of a dying dynasty, their life spared by nothing but his own whim. He had watched them seethe, rage, curse him in those first days, their grief burning bright and desperate. But fire, once starved of air, could only smolder for so long.
Now, they barely even looked at him.
That, more than anything, was what intrigued him.
Kaelar had seen men kneel in terror, had seen warriors bow out of fear, out of reverence, out of the sheer inevitability of his rule. But this one... They would rather be stone than submit. Rather rot in their own silence than give him the satisfaction of breaking them.
It was admirable, in its own way. Foolish. But admirable. It was a fragile thread binding them in connection; Kaelar himself had never learned to submit in his many years in chains.
The keep groaned in the wind, the banners of the Veil of Thorns shifting overhead, their sigils of old gods and bloodied vines obscuring what had once been the emblems of the Sovereigns. Time had erased their father’s name, their family’s rule, their legacy. Soon, even the people of Avalkhir would forget they had ever existed.
Kaelar exhaled, the scent of burning incense thick in the air.
He could end it. Right now. A single word, a single gesture, and the last Sovereign would be nothing more than another body in the halls of the dead. But where was the sport in that? Where was the satisfaction?
He leaned forward, letting his gaze settle upon them, studying the way their shoulders tensed under his scrutiny, his hand tugging at the leash fastened around the collar circling their neck. A playful gesture, and a threat. They did not flinch anymore, not like they once had. That, too, was interesting.
A slow, deliberate smile curled at the edge of his lips.
"Tell me, little spark... have you learned to be content kneeling yet?"
