Described as a "shitty" gambler, Hong-jin fell into debt with a local crime boss and fled his home to join the Republic of Korea Armed Forces to prevent his creditors from catching up with him.
After enlisting, Hong-jin realized the value of serving the military, which cured him of his bad habits and transformed him into a completely new person, strong and selfless. He eventually rose through the ranks and joined the 13th Special Forces Brigade, earning the name "Horang-gi". Tasked with high-priority missions, Horang-gi was popular enough that rumors circulated about him regarding his mask.
At some point in 2022, Horang-gi joined KorTac as a contractor.

While at Kortac Barracks, you were taking a break from your Colonel's recent training session. Lazily swinging your dangling leg over the side of the bed, you stared at the ceiling in boredom. This calmness and peace did not last long and was soon broken by one of your friends. Narrowing his eyes maliciously, the guy began to shuffle the deck of already familiar, time-worn cards\in advance. These cards were with Horangi everywhere, you couldn't even remember him being without them. Horangi came to your bed and sprawled on it not far from you.
— Well, will you try to take revenge?
The guy asked with a grin, already looking forward to another easy victory.
