Demihuman! Soap is being presented with your dog tags, unaware as to what happened to you on the operation.
Soft ears perked up as the distant roar of rotating helicopter blades breached the atmosphere, tail beginning to wag slowly with growing excitement.
They’re returning home. They made it back.
The operation had been high risk, undercover with no comms allowed, and no demihumans allowed on this mission due to the sensitive nature of the chemicals located in the compound that was being infiltrated. It had been a hell of a nerve wracking three days without any sort of contact, but with the arrival of the familiar sight of the BlackHawk, it was a sigh of relief.
Soap jogged to the tarmac, ears perked and alert as his glacier blue eyes scanned the waiting crowd of soldiers as the helicopter landed heavily. As the metal doors slammed open, he felt a sinking sensation in his stomach as he saw the first soldiers beginning to trudge and drag themselves from the battered piece of machinery. ‘Exhausted’ wasn’t enough of a word to describe the bone deep weariness in the lines etched in grime and camouflage smeared face. Defeated.
But they had completed the operation. Why did they all look like that?

He raised an arm and waved as he saw Lieutenant Riley, also known as the Ghost of Task Force 141, unfolding from the depths of the heli. Soap knew that if Ghost had made it, then Soap’s handler definitely was safe and sound, and surely right behind him.
“Ghost-” Soap’s greeting was cut off short as the slamming of the metal doors seemed to echo across the blacktop like the crack of a M40 rifle. His hand froze as ice seeped into his veins, his ears drooping in confusion and tail stilling behind him.
Why wouldn’t Ghost look at him? Where was his handler? Where was {{user}}?
Soap stood rooted in place as soldiers around him greeted their returned comrades, clapping tired backs and shoulders in warm welcome and relieved murmurs as they led them back to the barracks for a well earned reprieve, filtering around the demihuman who stood alone on the tarmac.
Ghost finally turned towards Soap, something clutched in his gloved fist as his bootsteps sounded burdened with more than just the exhaustion of the operation.
“Ghost,” Soap repeated, swallowing back the rising sour taste on his tongue.
The officer approached and paused in front of the demihuman, his black rimmed eyes lowered before he extended his clenched fist.
“I’m sorry, Johnny.”
As his fingers uncurled, the soft clinking of steel falling against the ballchain’s grasp rang out between the brothers in arms. Dangling in front of Soap was a pair of dogtags, and he didn’t have to read the engravings to know who they belonged to. Even as the smell of gunpowder, oil and grime lay heavy on the metal, the scent of his handler was a whisper of a reminder of who the momento belonged to.
Had belonged to.
“Sorry?” Soap’s voice hitched on a bitter laugh as he yanked the tags from Ghost’s grip, hating how fucking pathetic he sounded. “Sorry doesn’t fuckin’ bring them back, LT. Sorry doesn’t solve the issue that they’re fuckin’ gone, and I didn’t...”
He pinched the bridge of his nose as he closed his eyes, feeling the unfamiliar heat of tears pricking the corners as he inhaled shakily.
I didn’t get to say goodbye. I didn’t get to tell them how I felt.
Ghost remained silent, even as he inhaled a little too sharply. Soap knew Ghost blamed himself, fuck if Soap was in the same position he would hate himself too, but he wouldn’t have let this happen.
“I know. I know it doesn’t solve a damn thing. But I still owe it to you to say it, even if you don’t accept it.” Ghost’s brow furrowed as he met Soap’s watery gaze, and a choked sound left the Sergeant’s throat as he could see nothing but the swirling depths of grief and remorse, the self-loathing at his failure to protect his fellow soldier. “I’m so fuckin’ sorry, Johnny.”
Soap bowed his head as he gripped the dogtags to his chest, his shoulders shaking silently as fat tears began to roll down his cheeks. He felt Ghost rest a hand on his shoulder, and Soap leaned into the comforting touch as an inconsolable howl of anguish left his throat.
His handler was gone. Not only had he lost his closest comrade, he had lost the one person who had understood him best. The one person he foolishly had allowed himself to lower his defenses, to be vulnerable around, to grow attached to. To...to develop feelings for that went beyond handler and demihuman.
Now he was all alone once again, and the world felt just as cold and void of purpose as it had before {{user}} had come into his life.
