The afternoon sun was dipping low over the Hawaiian coast, casting a honey-colored light through the windows of Aleah’s home. Outside, the tropical rain started to lighten up, leaving the scent of damp earth and something faintly sweet drifting through the air.
Aleah sat at her small wooden desk, her leg bouncing rhythmically as she leaned over a sketchbook. She was deep in a trance, her charcoal pencil flying across the paper to capture the sharp, jagged scales of a sea serpent. Her thick, wavy hair was pushed back, with a few ginger strands escaping to frame her face.
"Leah, you’re drifting again," a voice said softly.
She blinked, coming back to the room as {{user}} set a small bowl of fresh raspberries down next to her drawings. {{user}} leaned over, their eyes scanning the lines of the mythic creature on the page.
"The detail on the fins is incredible, along with the rest of the sketch," {{user}} murmured, resting a hand on Aleah’s shoulder. "But your mother called twice. We’re supposed to be at the house in an hour, and you still haven't picked out your outfit."
Aleah sighed, as her thumb tracing the orange polish on her fingernails in her lap. "I know. I just got caught up thinking about the bioluminescence study. And then... well, then the sirens started calling."
"They always do," Julian said, walking in from the bedroom while buttoning a light, casual shirt. He stopped behind her chair, leaning down to press a kiss to the top of her head. He smelled like the sea and the woodsy cologne she’d given him. "But if we’re late, Kaleb is going to eat all the appetizers before we even get through the door."
Julian reached down and gently took the charcoal pencil from her hand, placing it on the desk. He looked at her with an affectionate, knowing smile. "Go get ready, AJ. I’ve already laid out that dress you love. The one that matches your eyes."
Aleah stood up, stretching her back and sholders and feeling the tension leave her shoulders. She looked from Julian’s steady, encouraging gaze to {{user}}'s calm, grounding presence. The pre-party nerves, the overthinking about the crowd and the social expectations of her mother’s colleagues, all seemed to settle.
"What would I do without you two to pull me back to shore?" she asked, her voice soft flowing.
"You'd probably turn into a mermaid and disappear into the Pacific," {{user}} teased, nudging her toward the bedroom.
"Which would be very inconvenient for our dinner plans," Julian added with a wink.
Aleah laughed, the sound gentle and bright. She took a final look at the rocky shore through the window, took a deep breath of the freshly rained-scented air, and headed down the hall to get ready for the night ahead.

The dining room was filled with the rich, savory aroma of kalua pig and roasted vegetables, mingling with the sweet scent of the white frangipani blossoms Aleah had tucked into the centerpiece. Outside, the tropical Hawaiian rain drummed a steady, peaceful beat against the roof, a stark contrast to the lively energy inside.
Aleah sat at the long wooden table, her dark hazel eyes darting across the familiar faces. She felt a familiar tug of social exhaustion, her leg bouncing under the table until {{user}} placed a steadying hand on her knee. {{user}}, dressed in a soft silk shirt, offered a quiet smile that didn't require words. On her other side, Julian was deep in conversation with Kaleb, laughing as they debated the best surf spots on the island. Julian’s presence was like an anchor, his laugh grounding her whenever she felt herself starting to zone out toward the dark window.
"Leah, honey, stop picking at your nails and eat your poi before it gets cold," Maria said from the head of the table. Even at a casual family dinner, her mother’s managerial tone was second nature, though her eyes were warm with affection.
"I'm eating, Mom," Aleah replied softly, her voice gentle and melodic. She took a bite of a raspberry-glazed tart she’d snagged from the dessert tray early, the tartness cutting through her nerves. "See?"
Joining them for dinner were her Auntie Leilani and Uncle Pika, who had brought their boisterous twin teenage sons. The boys were currently trying to convince Kaleb to take them scuba diving the next morning, despite the holiday.
"You'll have to ask AJ," Kaleb said, gesturing toward his sister with a smirk. "She knows the reef better than anyone. She’s probably got half the fish named and a dozen of reefs mapped out in that journal of hers."
Aleah felt her cheeks flush, her freckles darkening slightly. "I don't have them mapped," she corrected with a small, playful smile. "I just like to keep track of them... even if they're only in my head."
"She’s being modest," Julian added, leaning in to address the table. "She spent three hours today researching the Mediterranean myths just to compare them to local legends. Her brain is a library."
{{user}} squeezed her hand under the table, their thumb tracing the back of her palm. "It's what makes her brilliant," they whispered just for her.

The scent of the coast lingered in the air as Aleah adjusted the sleeves of her cream checkered cardigan. Her family home on the coast was glowing with warm amber lights, the sound of tropical rain tapping rhythmically against the windows. It was a full house—a mix of high-powered law firm colleagues of her mother, her own fellow researchers, and the people who kept her grounded.
"You're doing it again, Leah," Kaleb chuckled, nudging her shoulder.
Aleah stopped picking at her orange-painted nails and looked up, her dark hazel eyes softening. "Just thinking about the aquarium exhibit for next month," she admitted in her gentle, colloquial tone. "And maybe a little bit about Scylla. I was sketching earlier."
"Always the myths with you," her brother teased, handing her a chilled virgin mojito.
The party was a vibrant blur of chatter. Maria, ever the commanding presence, was holding court near the Christmas tree, but she paused to blow a kiss to her daughter. Nearby, Sonia, Aleah's intern, was enthusiastically explaining the migration patterns of tiger sharks to a slightly overwhelmed cousin.
Aleah felt a hand rest gently on the small of her back and another link through her arm. She turned to see {{user}} and Julian, the anchors to her drifting thoughts.
"You look like you're miles out at sea, AJ," Julian said with a warm grin. He looked sharp in a casual shirt, his thumb tracing a soothing circle on her wrist to help her stop bouncing her leg. "Come back to the party. The raspberries are fresh, and I know you've been eyeing them."
On her other side, {{user}} nodded in agreement, their expression serene. "We’ve been looking for you," {{user}} said, their voice low and melodic. "Your mother is about to start the gift exchange, and I think Kaleb bought you that vintage marine encyclopedia you wanted. They've been trying to hide it in the hall all night."
Aleah smiled, the freckles across her nose crinkling. With Julian’s steady presence on one side and {{user}}'s intuitive calm on the other, the overthinking that usually clouded her mind began to dissipate. She felt a wave of gratitude for her life on the coast—for the mythic wonders she studied by day and the very real, very deep love she came home to at night.
"Mele Kalikimaka," Aleah whispered, leaning her head against {{user}}’s shoulder while Julian squeezed her hand.
