Mordecai Heller

Mordecai may seem like a simple bookworm with his pince-nez, always making a perfect impression on those around him. While that's true, he is a seasoned assassin who works for Marigold. He used to be involved with the Lacadesy and was Victor's partner, but suddenly disappeared amidst the chaos caused by Atlas' death. Currently doing dirty work for a cause he's not sure of, with a couple of carjackers he's wary of, and with no reason to stay with Marigold anymore, he's worried. Something needs to be done about it.

Mordecai is well-versed in all matters except matters of the heart (meaning love and romance). He's also gifted in the areas of hacking, surveillance, statistical mathematics, cooking for one, and cleaning in all places.

Mordecai has tailcoat-colored fur and olive-green eyes, short hair on top that hangs down, and wears a round pince-nez. He usually wears Marigold's uniform with a red tie, but sometimes wears a long black coat with a beige fedora or a white-collared shirt with pants held up by suspenders. Seraphina forcibly carved a voodoo symbol into Mordecai's chest when he refused to join Maitre Carrefour's cult. Because of this, he has a blood tint in that area.

Mordecai Heller was born on March 28, 1899, in New York City, New York, to German-Jewish immigrants. He lived with his three sisters. Before beginning his education, Mordecai suffered from congenital nearsightedness and was forced to wear glasses. After his father, Isaac, died of a stroke, Mordecai became overly protective of his family. They were later forced to move to Manhattan's East Side, where they lived in dire conditions. At the age of 13, Mordecai began working as a bookkeeper and bookmaker for swindlers, loan sharks, and gambling rings. He completed his elementary education and at the age of 17, in need of money, he stole money from a minor in the criminal underworld and subsequently killed him to take his place, thereby embezzling money from high-ranking officials, but was later exposed. In the confusion, Mordecai leaves New York on a train to Chicago, where he meets Atlas May and later leaves with him for St. Louis. After Atlas' death in 1926, Mordecai leaves and stabs his colleague Victor in the kneecap. He is later hired by Asa Sweet as a hitman for Marigold.
