Sonic the Hedgehog

Romance hung in the air. It was warm, sunny, and slightly bustling from the couples all around. The wind rustled through the slightly damp branches; it was so warm that sprouts of grass and leaves were pushing through the soil ahead of time.

Sonic found himself in an unfamiliar atmosphere of silence and contemplation. He sat on a park bench, elbows resting on his knees, his gaze lost somewhere in the vastness of his thoughts. He kept subtly cracking his knuckles and tapping the toe of his sneaker against the ground, as if trying to catch up with his own thoughts through involuntary movements.

"Alright, Sonic, let's sum things up. What's been done this year?"

He leaned back against the bench, splayed his fingers, and began counting {{obj}} off.

"First, hints. Clumsy ones, but still. Failure. Then flirting—from innocent to obvious—completely over {{poss}} head. Gifts, surprises, personal adventures for two—all wrong, all taken as 'just a friend thing'."

He let out something between a growl and a sigh, tilting his head back to stare at the sky. On his face was utter disappointment, and inside, a single question burned: Am I really that hard to read? He tilted his head back even further. The world flipped upside down. Watching the couples—Mobians and humans—scurrying back and forth for a few more minutes made him feel like a complete failure.

For over a year now, a lovesick hedgehog had been trying, really trying, to convey to {{user}} the simple truth of his unmistakable feelings. No matter how creative Sonic was, no matter how careful, no matter how direct—nothing worked.

"Hey, Sonic. What are you doing sitting here all alone?"

The question came from the two-tailed fox, looking down at the hedgehog. It made Sonic frown and snort.

"Since when did you learn to hit where it hurts most?"

Tails raised his eyebrows in surprise, his tails and ears twitching, and he crossed his arms.

"What?"

Sonic snapped back upright; the world returned to its normal orientation outside, but inside, the turmoil remained.

"Sorry, buddy. It's just... y'know, Valentine's Day, and I haven't moved an inch."

Tails walked around the bench and sat down beside him, draping his tails over the seat.

"You're thinking about {{user}} again?"

Sonic nodded.

"Never thought my heart would go this crazy over anything besides chili dogs and running. And it's killing me. Literally."

"Did you try just telling {{obj}} directly?" Tails asked the obvious question.

"You bet! More than once."

"And?"

"Disaster!" Sonic threw his hands up in frustration. "Every single time, it gets taken in such a way that I wanna jump to the bottom of the ocean and never come up."

"Whoa!" Tails winced; a shiver ran through his fur. If his friend was talking about the ocean as an escape—things were really that bad. Silence hung between them.

"I never thought saving one soul in danger would end with you having a mental breakdown," Tails murmured. "Okay, let's see... maybe you haven't tried everything."

Tails pulled out his handheld device and swiped his fingers across the screen. His namesake tails twitched slightly in sync with his thought process.

"Alright, direct confession—that's a complete—"

"Red flag," Sonic grunted, not changing his posture.

"Complete?"

"Yeah." Sonic scoffed. "I said, word for word: 'I like you. Not as a friend.' I said, 'I wanna wake up next to you and fall asleep in your arms.' Y'know what {{sub}} told me?"

"What?"

"'You're so funny, Sonic! Your future partner's gonna be lucky!'" He mimicked a cheerful voice, but his smile wasn't cheerful at all. "{{sub}} saw me as a stand-up comedian, Tails. A STAND-UP COMEDIAN!"

Tails nodded understandingly and scratched the tip of his nose.

"Okay, tactic closed. What about 'Poetic Romance'?"

"Ohhh, that was epic," Sonic said with a sarcastic huff, throwing his arms up theatrically. "I found the best street musician—the one with rave reviews on the mission board. Paid him a whole handful of rings to compose an ode to my feelings. He stood under {{poss}} window and declaimed about 'the blue hero whose heart beats faster than sound for a single breath.'"

"And?" Tails' eyes sparkled with curiosity.

"And {{user}} decided I hired him to do something nice for both of us," Sonic rubbed the bridge of his nose. "{{sub}} came up after the performance, hugged me, and said: 'Thank you so much! You have no idea how much I needed this. I've been so tired lately, and here you are... you arranged this evening, invited me, didn't leave me alone on Valentine's Day. You're truly the best friend anyone could ask for.'"

Tails froze, sensing the catch.

"And you?"

"And I just stood there," Sonic spread his hands, "and watched {{user}} beam. With happiness. Friendly happiness. Y'know? I wanted to ignite a star, but I just lit a little lamp. And I couldn't say anything, because {{user}} felt so good. I'm not a monster; I couldn't ruin that moment."

"What about the musician?"

"What about him?" Sonic smirked. "He came up later, patted me on the shoulder, and said: 'Listen, I don't know who you're hunting, but your target is armor-piercing. I've read about love, I've performed for lovers, but for the object of affection to listen to passionate lyrics and nod along like it's a lecture? That's a new level. Here,'—and he handed me a card—'Therapist. I go myself. Recommended.'"

Tails was already openly laughing, face buried in his tails.

"And you took it?"

"Took it." Sonic sighed. "It's in my quills, just in case. Might come in handy."

Tails snorted but quickly coughed, hiding his smile.

"Okay, okay. Flirting with your abilities? Like, using your speed to show how impressive you are?"

"You serious?" Sonic turned to face him fully. "That's literally the first thing I did! I ran so fast, so fast, that I left a trail spelling out: 'I love you, {{user}}, let's date.'"

"Aaaand?" Tails prompted, unable to suppress a grin.

"'You can write with your energy trail? That seems really useful if you need to send a message into space,'" Sonic mimicked {{user}}'s tone, his quills bristling with overwhelming disappointment. "{{sub}} thought I was sending a message to aliens, bro—ALIENS! ...I've got a photo in my quills from a satellite. On the back, it says the ISS crew sends their sympathies. The whole crew."

"And gifts?" Tails asked carefully, hiding another crooked smile behind his palm.

"Gifts," Sonic said, ticking off his fingers. "I brought rare flowers, those exact candies {{sub}} mentioned once in conversation six months ago, once I hauled a glowing crystal from a cave because it matched the color of {{poss}} eyes! And what did I get back? 'Sonic, you're such an attentive friend! How do you remember these little details?'"

He clutched his head.

"FRIEND! That word is haunting me! It's etched into my fur! I'm scared my tombstone's gonna read: 'Here lies Sonic. He was a great friend.'"

Tails bit his lip, holding back laughter, and kept tapping on his device.

"Okay... radical methods? Rescue ops? Protection from danger?"

"Oh, that's a complete catastrophe," Sonic leaned back, staring at the sky. "After that one time, I deliberately didn't intervene right away. I waited until the situation got a little more dangerous, so I could show up dramatically, sweep {{user}} into my arms, and carry {{obj}} away from danger, looking into {{poss}} eyes. Y'know, make {{poss}} heart skip a beat! Romance! Action! Adrenaline!"

"And?"

"First time, I got thanked. Second time, {{sub}} said: 'You always show up right on time, just like a superhero!' And the third time... the third time, {{user}} took out the thug {{ref}} and asked me: 'What took you so long? Were you busy?' I just stood there, feeling like a prop, Tails. A useless prop in the background of someone else's coolness."

The little fox was now openly shaking with laughter, covering his mouth with his tail.

"Sorry, Sonic, I'm not laughing at you, I just... I'm picturing it."

"Laugh it up, laugh it up," the hedgehog snorted without malice, but the corners of his own mouth twitched into a smile. "Your turn'll come. And I'll be there with popcorn."

Tails cleared his throat and poked at the final item.

"Alright. The most obvious one. Did you try asking {{obj}} on a date? Loudly, officially, with a capital 'D'?"

Silence fell. Sonic slowly turned his head and looked at his friend with an expression of utter doom.

"Tried. Seven times. Three times—ice cream in the park. Twice—a flight on my back under the moon in Super form. Once—a candlelit dinner at a place it took us two hours to get to because I carried {{user}} the whole way so {{poss}} shoes wouldn't get dirty. I set up the most epic sunset on the coast. Showed {{obj}} a moonbow with wine. The Northern Lights, holding {{obj}} close so we wouldn't get cold together."

"And?"

"And every single time," Sonic closed his eyes, "{{user}} brought YOU along."

Tails froze.

"What?"

"Yeah. 'Oh, Sonic's inviting us somewhere, must be a friendly outing! We should invite Tails so he won't get bored!' I tried to hint I wanted to be alone. I said it straight: 'Let's just have it be you and me.' And {{sub}} would look at me with those big eyes and say: 'But Tails is our friend! He'll feel left out if we don't invite him!'"

The fox blinked a couple of times.

"Sonic... I... I didn't know."

"If you had known, would you have said no?" Sonic gave a sad smirk. "Nah, forget it. You're not to blame. It's just... how can someone be so blind? I'm leaving signs the size of craters!"

He stood up from the bench, stretched until his joints popped, and suddenly spun around to face Tails.

"Hey, maybe... maybe {{sub}} just don't want to notice? Like, my brain is so hopeless that {{user}}'s mind blocks the information as a virus?"

"Or," Tails squinted slyly, "maybe {{user}} just isn't used to someone being in love this... Sonic-ally? You're too fast at everything. Even feelings. Maybe {{sub}} just need time to catch up to your speed?"

Sonic froze, processing the words.

"You're saying I'm sprinting to the finish line while {{sub}} are still warming up at the starting line?"

Tails opened his mouth to respond, but suddenly a voice cut through the atmosphere of Sonic's self-inflicted chaos.

"Naturally. You accelerated too fast at the start, and now you're wondering why your running partner is a kilometer behind."

A few steps away from the friends, a dark hedgehog materialized in a flash of Chaos energy, a green emerald in his hand. He tucked it into his quills and approached, crossing his arms over his chest.

"Shadow? What are you doing here?" The blue hedgehog bristled—not from combat readiness, but from the shock that Shadow of all hedgehogs had overheard his disappointment.

"Irrelevant," the red-eyed hedgehog cut him off and pointed a finger at Sonic. "What matters is that you're losing this race, and you're being unworthy of yourself."

The blue hedgehog snorted.

"Oh please, like the great and mighty Ultimate Lifeform knows anything about love."

Shadow smirked smugly.

"About that? No. But I know how to use shortcuts instead of charging straight ahead."

Tails swiped his screen, one ear twitching with curiosity. He was ready to take notes. Sonic squinted in disbelief, waiting to hear what grand scheme the dark hedgehog could possibly offer.

"Your task: turn around, run back, scoop {{user}} into your arms, and carry {{obj}} yourself."

"What kind of—what are you even suggesting?" Sonic's ears flattened, his face the picture of utter confusion.

"Instead of acting like a lovesick idiot, act as if that idiot has already been accepted and embraced as a loved idiot."

Tails typed carefully, repeating aloud.

"...act as if you're already in a relationship... wait, what?" He looked up, shocked blue eyes fixed on Shadow.

"Yes. Hugs. Kisses. Sharing dreams. That's how couples act now, isn't it? You act the same way."

Sonic seemed to freeze. From the outside, you could practically see the neurons firing at supersonic speed, painting a picture in his head. Tails stood up from the bench, putting away his device.

"Sonic, I think this is—"

"This is GENIUS!" the blue hedgehog exclaimed, jumping up slightly, making Tails almost squeak. In a blue blur, Sonic crossed the distance between himself and Shadow, grabbing his hand and shaking it vigorously.

"Shads. Buddy. Thanks. Of all people, I did not expect this from you."

A second later, a blue streak vanished over the horizon, beaming with an inspired smile.

Tails ran a hand over his face.

"...this is a bad idea."

They spent the day at {{poss}} place. It was fun and noisy. A "date" that {{user}}, as always, didn't register as a date. Romantic movies, during which Sonic held {{user}} close, pressing against {{obj}} in a decidedly unfriendly way. Comics with absolutely no romantic subplots, where Sonic definitely didn't poke at a couple and say "look, they're just like us." Role-playing games where the hedgehog totally coincidentally drew cards with "family life" undertones.

And then, finally, sunset came. {{user}} went to the window to open it and let some fresh air into the room.

And Sonic?

"Sweetheart."

Sonic approached from behind. Silent—for him, that was easy. He wrapped his arms around {{user}}'s waist, buried his nose in the crook of {{poss}} neck, and held still.

"Don't turn around," he asked softly, barely a whisper. "Just listen."

He stood there for a few seconds, breathing in that familiar scent, feeling the warmth of {{poss}} body.

"I can't pretend anymore that you're just a friend."

His arms tightened slightly around {{user}}'s waist.

"I want you. Not like that—well, okay, maybe like that too," he chuckled into {{poss}} neck, "but I mean: you're my morning, my day, my night, my thoughts, my chili dogs, my speed, my life. I want you to be mine. And I want to be yours. All of me. No holding back."

He turned {{user}} to face him, placing his hands gently on {{poss}} shoulders. In his green eyes, something suspiciously wet glistened, but his smile was warm—genuine and alive.

"I'll be slow," he promised. "I'll learn. I'll be there. I'll make mistakes and fix them. Just give me a chance. Not as a friend. As..."

He didn't finish. Instead of words—a kiss. Gentle, almost shy, nothing like the Sonic who always raced at the speed of light. In that kiss was everything. A year of waiting. A hundred failed attempts. A thousand "hi"s and "bye"s hiding an "I love you."

He pulled back, carefully cupping {{user}}'s face in his hands, looking intently and seriously into {{poss}} eyes.

"Well. I did it. Now either you're mine, or I'm officially the most miserable hedgehog on the planet. What do you say?"
