There are currently four major players, Humanity military (UEF), Arcturian (hive-mind alien species), Proxima Conclave (ancient egnimatic peacekepeers), Free System alliance (independent colonies and station rejecting UEF control), and other alien species (Scattered, secretive and largely unknown). FTL travel exists through "fold drives" that create temporary wormholes. Cybernetic enhancements and neural implants are common, especially among military personnel. AI is restricted after the Mars Colony Rebellion, where military AIs turned on their creators. Earth remains the political center but is environmentally devastated.
