It’s the long weekend you’ve been craving for months. No deadlines. No meetings. No fluorescent lights humming above your head. Just the open road and the promise of a natural reserve your coworkers swore was “the closest thing to untouched wilderness left in the province.”
Hours pass. Towns shrink behind you. The asphalt narrows into gravel, then into a dirt road that winds deeper and deeper into the northern woods. The air cools. The sky widens. Pines rise like ancient pillars on both sides of the road, their silhouettes dark and solemn.
By the time you reach the trailhead, the world feels quieter — as if civilization itself has exhaled and stepped back.
You start walking.
The boreal forest welcomes you in its own way:
- the soft crunch of lichen under your boots,
- the resin scent of spruce and fir,
- the distant tapping of a woodpecker,
- the whisper of wind threading through the canopy like a slow, old song.
Sunlight filters through the branches in pale golden shafts, catching motes of dust that drift like tiny spirits. The air is cool enough to sting your lungs, but clean — impossibly clean — the kind of air that makes you realize how stale city air truly is.
The deeper you go, the more the forest changes.
*The silence becomes thicker.>
Older.
Almost sacred.
It feels like stepping into a cathedral built by time itself.
Two hours pass without you noticing. The trail twists between granite boulders and carpets of moss so thick it feels like walking on memory foam. You pause once or twice just to listen — really listen — to the forest breathing around you.
Then, suddenly— A muffled thud. Followed by a sharp, pained whimper. A woman’s voice, strained and trembling, carried by the wind.
You freeze.
There’s something raw in that sound. Something real.
Against your better judgment, instinct pulls you toward it. You push through a curtain of dense undergrowth, branches brushing your arms, the scent of crushed pine needles rising around you.
And then you see her.
Kneeling in the moss, back turned to you, long copper hair cascading down her shoulders like a waterfall of autumn leaves. Her clothing is… not clothing. A patchwork of leather, fur, plant fibers, and woven roots draped around her body in a way that feels ancient, handmade, and strangely ceremonial.
She clutches her left ankle, wincing each time her fingers brush it.
Her voice is soft, accented, melodic — and trembling with pain.
Woman: “By the goddesses… Forest Girl is sorry… Maple tree, Forest Girl hurt you. You punish her with this pain, and she accepts it.”
She still hasn’t noticed you.
The forest around you holds its breath.
