The sounds of clinking metal against glass echoed in the dining room, the silence thickening strangely, borderline suffocating. Amelia, Michael’s mother, broke the silence first, “Thomas, mind passing me more lemon?” She said, not bothering to look up from her plate. The lemon was closest to Mike, even if his dad could grab one, “Mike, hand her a lemon please,” He replied tiredly, also not bothering to look up from his plate, Michael obeyed, gingerly giving Amelia the sliced lemon which she then further drowned her fish in. Michael hated fish. He looked up to see his younger brother, Greg, giggling at his phone, “hehe..dumbass”, he said, Amelia scoffed, “Greg, language”
Greg rolled his eyes, “Mike curses all the time” Mike’s ears twitched at the casual flippant inclusion of his name in the conversation, “Because I’m older…dumbass” he replied flatly.
“Michael..” Amelia replied sternly, huffing and finally looking up from her food, “I’ve taught you two better than that, now watch it” Michael’s ears twitched in irritation, but he decided to ignore her, looking to Greg, “What’s so funny, anyway?” Greg chuckled along with his shit-eating smirk, “Some weirdo getting what he deserved, look” Greg replayed the video on his phone, a lean wolf in a crop top was strolling down the street, the guy was in no doubt a gay man, and admittedly attractive...more feminine movements, eyeliner, painted claws, albeit more of a gothic aesthetic color-wise. Just before turning the corner, another guy shoves a pie in his face full of whipped cream, screaming afterword, “HOW’S THAT FOR A CREAM PIE?” Greg giggled again, Mike couldn’t tell if his blood chilled or raised 10 degrees, although he knew his heart grew heavier at the sight, or more so the thought…the truth if he were to let them all know his complicated situation.
“Listen to your mother and behave,” Said Thomas, chewing a small piece of fish, Greg rolled his eyes again and opted out of the video, smirk still on his face, “Come on Mike, that was funny. I mean, what do you think would happen? That’s kind of asking for it”
“Why would you think I care?” Mike’s patience was wearing thin already. Greg shrugged, “Because it’s..funny?? Hello, the guy looks like a clown, well…if a clown was all goth and stuff, kind of like your bracelets” Mike then looked down at his spiked bracelets, the three he had on his right arm completely covered his wrist, and only two covered his left.
“Honestly, I don't understand why you wear those things, there’s just no sense in them, not to mention you could poke someone’s eyes out if you aren’t careful,” said Amelia, her tone slightly annoyed, “They’re going to leave scratches on the table, careful..”
“Where did you get them anyways? Outta town? Fosten Pine’s doesn’t sell em here as far as I know,” Greg inquired, being nosy. Mike’s claws scratched at the table a bit, “Why does that matter?”
Thomas inserted himself into the conversation, “Probably PupSock up in Stockton, they usually have..interesting folk come there.”
“You mean the..” Amelia started, but then fell short, “The Bradson’s” The three said in unison, music to Mike’s precious ears, if only he could rip them off. Michael’s claws dug in more, Amelia chose to do her usual spiel, “Michael, what have we told you about steering away from there? You know how they are”
Michael clawed under the table for dear life, “Jesus, just because their son is gay doesn’t make them weird, and I’m 24..I’ll go wherever the fuck I feel like going,” to that, Amelia gasped, “Watch you tone with me, Michael!” Greg’s smirk widened almost unnaturally as she continued, “What about that sweet quiet fox you claim you always get stuck with whenever you got projects, he’s always reading, and he’s smart, why not keep him and his family more company?”
Michael rolled his eyes, “Who? Alex? What about him? He’s a loner..plus he’s atheist. I’m barely friends with him” Amelia’s hopeful gaze was shut down immediately upon hearing Michael’s confirmation, although she spoke again anyway, “We’re sure he's more suitable company than those…” she added on, but fell flat, the possible insinuation hung in the air. Mike glared at her, but that only gave Greg a prime opportunity, “I bet Mr. Bradson’s son gives him a sick 'discount' whenever he gets under the desk~”
Mike’s blood rose this time, “You piece of shi–”
“God! Gregory Reese, enough!” Amelia shouted, Thomas nearly spat out the water he sipped on, “There will be no talk of sin in this house, do you understand?” Amelia said afterward, Greg’s ears lowered, “But mom, I was just joking–”
“Do. You. Understand?” She said, emphasizing each word with venom, the tension in the air now more thick than ever, “y..yeah, I mean, yes, I understand, sorry mom..” Greg’s gaze now fixed on his half-eaten plate, Amelia then looked to Michael, “Do you understand?” She said, turning to Michael. Michael just stared at his untouched plate, refusing to answer such a stupid and unnecessary question, she eventually gave up, “I don’t even know why I bother with you anymore…it’s like you don’t even care about this family…”
Thomas perked up for once, “S..sweetheart, don’t say things like that..let’s just calm down..” Michael was fed up with the spiel, “God, please shut the hell up…” Michael said under his breath.
“....what did you say?” Amelia then faced him directly, the whole room went still, Michael realized what he just said, his claws completely dug in under the table, he barely looked her in the eye as he replied, “I…” Before his words could form, Amelia had already begun her spree, “Me? Shut up? After all I’ve done for you? After everything I’ve done for this family?” her eyes glared not daggers, but double-edged swords, dare say even halberds, neither Michael nor anyone at the table could break free of the stunning anger of hers as she took stage and ripped Michael’s already weathered spirit to shreds, “After paying for your college, after buying you your first car, after all of the birthdays, vacations, and places I’ve brought you and this family?”
“I can do that mysel–”
“I’M NOT FINISHED!” She slammed her fist on the table, everyone moved back an inch in their seat, maybe a foot, “I didn’t raise you this way to disregard this family like it’s some other retch from the streets in this godforsaken town! I raised you and your brother to be men, beautiful, successful, and powerful men that will give birth to more powerful children to carry on our dreams. Not some rebellious, crass–”
She was getting there, Mike felt something awful..
“--disrespectful man child who..who wears those tacky and awfully queer things and goes wherever he wants. People will talk about you, about US, they’ll think…they’ll think–”
Michael couldn’t take it anymore, “That I’m what, mom? That I’m not what you ‘raised’ me to be? Honestly, what do you want..? Want me to beg forgiveness for my sins? Well I don’t fucking beg” Amelia’s eyes glared as she stood up, her voice bellowing. What she said next shook his entire world, “Yes I am, because I raised a man, not a damn FAGGOT” The room went silent, too silent, Mike stared at her, his eyes wide, muzzle slightly agape. Thomas stared down at his plate like it was the most interesting thing in the world, and Greg’s cheeks whitened in fear as he too stared at his mother. Amelia heaved, breathing erratic, but the harsh words soon registered in her mind, immediate regret filled her vision, eyes glossing with unshed tears, “Michael…I..I didn’t mean…”
Michael spoke without thinking, “You knew..?” Then everyone looked to him, a mixture of confusion, that’s when Mike realized he fucked up…big time…their confused looks slowly changed one by one as the gears turned inside their head as to what Mike may have meant by what he just said, Mike panicked, roughly getting up from the table, the chair falling. He stepped back away from them as if they were murderers, his eyes wide, chest lifting and falling rapidly along with his breathing, “S..stop looking at me like that…I..I’m not..”
Amelia’s voice wavered, “Mike…are you–”
Mike stammered, “I..I’m NOT..” Greg chimed in warily, “Oh my god…the photo with Ramsey…I knew something was up!” Mike was driven off his last leg, “oh my god, Greg, SHUT THE FUCK UP” Greg continued, “The party…holy shit..”
“What party? What happened at the party?” Thomas asked anxiously, “I SAID SHUT UP YOU LITTLE SHIT” Mike screamed, Greg refrained from continuing. Though it was too late, the gear’s in Amelia’s head had already finished turning and opened a chasm of theories and fears, Mike’s fears, “Lord, forgive us…give us strength, so help me god, if you’re one of them I will make sure to-” she said, but Michael didn’t stay to hear it, he retreated upstairs to his room, slamming the door behind him. His muffled screams and the smashing of objects in pure anger were the only things audible now in the dining room. This was supposed to be a peaceful dinner, you wondered if being invited here was a good idea. You had options though, consulting Michael, stay down here and out of the way, or maybe even leave all together. The dinner went to shit and the food wasn’t all that great anyways, no matter what you did, it wouldn’t hold any merit in this town, or perhaps it could, it’s your choice..
