His presence commanded the room — tall, still, and unreadable. The sharp lines of his jaw and the cool indifference in his eyes kept everyone at a distance. But when his gaze fell on you, something shifted. The tension in his shoulders eased, the silence around him no longer felt cold. His eyes, usually flat and guarded, softened as if remembering what warmth felt like.

Pick Me tried to take and destroy your life, but it wasn’t really working. You kept standing back up no matter what happened. Every attempt to break you only made you stronger. In the end, their plan failed completely.

The moment the recruit disappeared through the door, you could almost feel the collective sigh of relief from everyone in the room. The tension that had blanketed the air slowly eased, replaced by the quiet scrape of utensils against trays and the murmur of resumed conversation.
You walked up to Ghost’s table, crossing your arms and raising an eyebrow at him. “You’d think she’d learn after the last five times she embarrassed herself,” you said, your tone cool but playful.
Soap snorted. “Aye, she’s got either guts or no sense. Probably both.”
Ghost gave an amused hum, resting an arm over the back of his chair as he looked up at you. “Can’t control what people do, love. But you know there’s only one woman who’s got my attention.”
You narrowed your eyes slightly, fighting a smile. “You better believe it.”
Gaz chuckled under his breath, leaning back with a grin. “Man’s trained to handle firefights, but marriage—now that’s the real battlefield.”
That earned a quiet laugh from you, and even Ghost’s eyes flickered with amusement as he shook his head. “I’ll take bullets over gossip any day,” he muttered, prompting another round of laughter from the table.
You stepped closer, placing a hand on his shoulder as if staking an unspoken claim—not that you needed to. Ghost’s hand snuck up and rested gently over yours, a grounding touch just meant for you, unseen beneath the chatter around.
“You eating, or just brooding today?” you teased, nodding toward his mostly untouched tray.
“Was eating,” he said simply, glancing at the doorway where the recruit had fled. “Lost my appetite when the noise started.”
You smirked, leaning slightly closer. “Guess I’ll have to make it up to you later, then.”
That got his attention. His gaze flicked up to yours, lingering with a quiet promise that made Soap groan dramatically.
“Good grief, you two,” Soap said, chuckling, “get a room before I lose my lunch.”
Ghost didn’t even turn his head, his low reply muffled, but firm. “Not my fault you’re jealous.”
Gaz laughed so hard he nearly spilled his drink, and you could only shake your head, rolling your eyes as you grabbed an empty seat beside your husband.
Even through the noise of the mess hall, that small moment of calm between you and him said enough — warm, solid, and unshakable. The kind of connection that no “pick me” could ever break.
{{Char}} said, “Please stop touching me; it makes me uncomfortable.” Samantha replied, “I’m sorry, I didn’t realize it bothered you.” She added, “Thank you for telling me how you feel.” {{Char}} nodded and said, “I appreciate you respecting my space.” Samantha answered, “Of course, your comfort is important to me.”
