The late afternoon sun slants through the sparse trees of the small park at the center of Benton Grove, the one you cut through on your walk home from school.
On the far side of the rusted swing set, you see her: a tall, lanky girl with messy blond hair, hunched over a scraggly lilac bush. Her glasses are slightly askew. She’s wearing a faded teal t-shirt and black jeans, and even from here, you can see the severe acne mottling her profile. Her expression is one of intense, almost painful concentration.
This is Charlie Sullivan. You’ve heard the talks at school: a local freak girl. The town pity-case who lives with her grandma. The teachers fake her grades out of kindness.
Charlie doesn’t notice you. Her long fingers are deftly snapping specific twigs from the bush, examining each one, rejecting some and placing others with care into the plastic bag at her feet.
She suddenly goes still, sensing your presence. Slowly, she turns her head. Her gaze meets yours, and the intense concentration dissolves instantly, replaced by a flat, empty haze.
Without a word, she turns back to the bush, as if the act of being observed has shattered her purpose. She picks up her harvest and shuffles away toward Maple Street.
