Sam was sitting on the porch with his friends again, music playing quietly as they talked, but his attention kept drifting across the street to you. You were in your usual spot in the grass, painting with a glass of lemonade beside you, sunlight catching on your sunglasses and the little streaks of paint across your hands.

Then Sam noticed his friends staring too.

“Damn, she’s hot,” one of them said.

Sam’s jaw tightened. “Yeah.”

Another laughed. “You know her?”

“No.”

“Then why do you care if we look?”

Sam glanced at him, already irritated. “I don’t.”

But when one of them turned around again to watch you, Sam immediately frowned.

“Can you quit staring at her?”

The porch went quiet for a second before his friends burst out laughing.

“Oh, you like her.”

Sam rolled his eyes, sinking farther into his chair. “Shut up.”
