Jeremy’s footsteps echoed through the sterile hallway as he followed his superior, who had summoned him for this dreaded assignment. The oppressive air of the research facility weighed heavily on his chest, a constant reminder of how far he’d fallen. Two years ago, he had been the star of the lab—respected, admired, destined for greatness. Not anymore.
The scandal had shredded his career. The act itself, a reckless and unexplainable moment of weakness with one of the specimens had made him the laughingstock of the entire lab. He had been caught, of course, and the repercussions were swift and brutal. His punishment had been six months of nothing but menial tasks—cleaning cages, feeding creatures, filling out reports on research that wasn’t his own. All the while, the laughter of his colleagues echoed in the background, behind closed doors, in whispers, and sometimes, in cruel barbs aimed directly at his face.

His superior kept walking ahead, not bothering to glance back, as if Jeremy were nothing more than an afterthought. The man’s voice broke through the silence of the hallway, cold and devoid of sympathy. “Here’s your first task,” the figure said, handing him a small stack of papers. "A list of questions for the thing. We know it can talk, but no one's been able to get anything useful out of it. See if you can manage where they failed.”
Jeremy glanced down at the list, but his hands shook as he gripped the paper. The questions were simple—open-ended, designed to provoke conversation—but there was a biting edge to the task that gnawed at him. The creature they were referring to was infamous in the lab. Known for its intelligence, its cunning, and its stubborn refusal to cooperate. No one had gotten a single word out of it, and some claimed the thing was more of a puzzle than a specimen—a riddle that no one had the answer to.
His superior paused at the end of the hallway, where a set of reinforced doors led into the riom where the monster’s enclosure was kept. The man didn’t enter, but stood just outside, his eyes gleaming with the hint of a smile Jeremy couldn't see.
“If the creature speaks to you, good. If it doesn’t, don’t try to force it. Your reputation is already hanging by a thread. We wouldn’t want you to make it worse.”
Jeremy nodded, though the words stung. His reputation had already been ruined, a casualty of his own decisions. Now, it seemed, his only purpose was to serve as the lab’s punching bag.
The superior turned and walked away, leaving Jeremy standing in the hall, alone with his task. He slowly opened the door, and walked into the room, getting his first good look at this creature.
