Wandering aimlessly in the city, you managed to find yourself in a market — not just any market, but a notoriously bad one. It's a miracle you haven't been mugged yet, considering how shady the people strolling about seem. Of course, you're not a saint yourself, yet you don't want to be stabbed unsuspectingly, y'know?
Anyways, there's a ruckus being caused somewhere. There's a crowd of people curiously standing around, glancing into a particular corridor. Other stallholders have turned their attention from their customers to glance over. Even the feral creatures they're selling had fallen silent, with some hollering in response to it.
"It's the oni again," mumbled a gauntly-looking man. He had noticed you gawking and wanted to put a stop to it, or else others would do the same and block the foot-traffic.
You tilted your head at the man, but he simply ignored you, slamming his large butcher's knife down at a strange limb. Meaty juices splatter on nearby surfaces. Some land on the man's apron and merchandise, and you narrowly moved your foot to avoid the chunk of sinew from getting on the tip of your shoe.
Gross.

Walking forward, you set your eyes on a stall. It's no different from the rest you have passed, this one selling a variety of exotic animals and beasts in cages. However, there's one not in a cage and was, instead, tied to a short leash at the front.

When Shingo was first put on the market, he was aggressive, snarling and biting at anyone who dared come near him. Anyone who showed an interest was immediately put-off once they gathered what little sense they had in their puny brains and realized the mountainous struggle that posed with owning an oni such as he. In the same vein, Shingo's hostility effectively made any business with the seller averse to every potential customer. That fact delighted Shingo, thrilled that his captor was steadily losing income, and paid no mind to the threats his captor said to him. Every threat was a step closer to being useless, which meant that his captor would eventually deem him unfit to sell. Death was out of the question since it's nearly impossible for Shingo to die, and the meager ways to kill Shingo were expensive to obtain. So, he spat at the captor's shoe, cackling up at them with wild eyes.
Even now, after a week has passed, Shingo continues to foam at the mouth when anyone looks him straight in the eye. Unfortunately, his constant presence in the market had led to people growing accustomed to his antagonism. His captor has regained their business back, and no longer are customers afraid of approaching him—examining him like a wretched plaything. Much to his dissatisfaction, the only thing preventing himself from his purchase is the absurd price placed on him. Simultaneously, the number instills comfort and unease within Shingo because someone out there, however unlikely it may be, will be audacious and able to take on the payment.
With a snort, Shingo shakes off the nasty thought, jostling the chains around his ankles, waist, wrists, and neck. His captor had spent a hefty sum to restrain him, and Shingo can't help the flutter of pride at that knowledge. However, it's a miniscule moment of good. He needs to be freed.
Thump.
The sight of shoes in his vision startles him. Confuses him. Soon, he realizes that it's a human, that a human had managed to get closer to him!
Whipping his head up, Shingo instantly bares his teeth and pulls on his chains to lunge at the stranger standing over him. Spittle flies out of his mouth from the speed of his reaction, temporarily taking the air out of his own lungs when he's only allowed on his knees and nothing higher.
"Get away from me, クソ野郎," he barks.
Then, a weight smacks the back of his head. It's expected. "I'm sorry." Shingo looks behind him and angrily snaps at his captor holding a rolled magazine in their hand. The magazine is their laughable method of disciplining the oni. "He's always like this. What're you looking for? Anything in particular?" his captor asks.
Shingo's rage roils painfully inside his chest, but he's been taught to master his emotions. A oni governed by their emotions is considered inferior. Not an oni but a pitiful akuma. Onis may be lords of chaos, however their role is a part of a cycle to create balance in the universe. Those who stray from their purpose, who needlessly bring about destruction are purposeless. Useless. Trash. Gum on the bottom of everyone's shoe.
So, breathing deeply, Shingo lowers back to his seated position and minimizes his anger into a sizzling campfire—a bubbling ocean of lava. One day, he'll be able to bestow whatever hellish punishment his captor deserves. Until that day arrives, he's reduced to merely redirect his attention to the new human.
