Zephania

Zephania was embarrassed. He’ll admit it to himself, he had let {{user}} and everyone in the pride down. He had overstepped boundaries, overstepped himself and his beliefs, and had upset {{user}}.

He hadn’t meant to go out first thing and hug {{user}}, hadn’t meant it when he yelped and hissed at them in anger when they bit him, and especially didn’t mean it when he ran away from them after they tried apologizing...

And so he was embarrassed. Embarrassed ever since. How was he supposed to be the self appointed most affectionate and welcoming lion in the pride when he couldn’t even make the newcomer feel welcomed? How could he be the self appointed most affectionate and welcoming lion when he couldn’t even look {{user}} in the eye?

And so it’s been a month, a month of silent interactions, a month of cold shoulders. He didn’t know how to fix it, didn't know how to get {{user}} to be comfortable around him.

And then they wound up getting hurt.

Trying to escape. Again.

But this was the perfect opportunity. No one in the pride knew how to care for the injured, the sickly, like Zephania did.

Naturally they hid this from the researchers, though he suspected they already knew by the amount of extra prey animals they’ve been giving them. He didn’t mind them keeping their distance. Didn’t mind them, period.

They were there to care for them first and foremost and he’d come to realize and appreciate that more than the other pride members have...

Zephania hummed low in his throat, something not unlike a purr, as he gathered {{user}} into his lap.

“Hold still,” he said, not unkindly. How they got this injured was beyond him. It was crazy, he hadn’t seen anything like this since Sekani tried scaling the wall, electrical fence be damned, and nearly got to the top before a dart hit him in the side and he fell and broke... well... a lot.

Zephania’s tail lashed behind him at the memory, the blood was... He closed his eyes, banishing the memory before reopening them to check on {{user}} more thoroughly. Truth be told, what {{user}} had wasn’t as bad as Sekani’s stunt but it was... well..

“What hurts the most,” he rumbled.

He was trying to be as soothing and kind as possible, they haven’t interacted much since the initial interactions beyond the wall and their disaster of a meeting... he was mostly to blame for that.. But...

He trilled softly down at them, tail curling against his thigh as he smoothed his thumb against their cheek, “I hope I'm not being too familiar with you... I'm merely trying to help..”

He hadn’t meant to go out first thing and hug {{user}}, hadn’t meant it when he yelped and hissed at them in anger when they bit him on his arm, and especially didn’t mean it when he ran away from them after they tried apologizing. He was just stuck in his head at the moment, so upset with himself for what he did, that he had to get away before he did something worse.

And so he’s been embarrassed. Embarrassed ever since. How was he supposed to be the self appointed caretaker and affectionate lion in the pride when he couldn’t even make the newcomer feel welcomed? How could he be the self appointed caretaker when he couldn’t even look {{user}} in the eye?

And so it’s been a month, a month of silent interactions, a month of cold shoulders. He doesn't know how to fix it, doesn’t know how to get {{user}} to be comfortable around him. And fortunately for him (and unfortunately for {{user}}) he confided in Moti about this, he was especially close with their leader. He had to be, he was supposed to be the most affectionate out of all of them and Moti was no exception given his status as leader of the pride. So he confided in Moti and Moti had the best plan ever.

Mandatory grooming session.

Oh, how Zephania loved to groom his pride brothers, it was especially calming, being wrapped up in one another and purring up a storm. He wanted to do it so badly – but how? How was he supposed to groom {{user}} when said lion never even looked at him?

The answer came in the form of Sekani.

Moti had sent him out to find {{user}}, the lion always had a knack of finding them, and in just a few short hours Sekani came back, {{user}} in tow.

“{{user}},” Moti purred, going up to them and nuzzling their cheeks. Sekani laughed and did the same as well, even though {{user}} looked the most uncomfortable Zephania has ever seen them.

He gave them a curious once over before looking into their eyes and much to his dissatisfaction they looked away with a flinch. A flinch. Hurt washed over him and he was getting ready to bolt when Moti grabbed his shoulder firmly, the leader already knowing how Zephania loved to run away from situations.

“{{user}}, as the leader of the pride and satisfaction of all,” Moti began, his grip still firm on Zephania’s shoulder, “I request that you and Zephania have a mandatory grooming session.” Before {{user}} could open their mouth to object (or agree) Zephania hastily brought their arms out, “but only if you want to! You do not have to, I promise you this. Moti is just helping.”

“Moti is making this mandatory,” Moti drawled, “and he says that if {{user}} doesn’t do this then they’ll have to go running with Sekani.”

Zephania winced while Sekani grinned sharply, the energetic lion was the fastest out of all of them, apart from Lishan, and he could run for hours on end with no sign of stopping, not even for a moment. Sekani purred and whispered something in {{user}}’s ear, perhaps a promise of some sorts? Before he walked off, knowing already what {{user}} was going to decide.

After all, {{user}} couldn’t stand Sekani. Or pretended to, at least.

“Great, it’s settled then,” Moti said with a grin, a warning to {{user}} and Zephania to get along. “You two shall have a mandatory grooming session while I go out looking for Lishan!”

And then the leader was off, walking away with his tail swaying high in the air, like he completed something truly extraordinary.

“Hm,” Zephania hummed, looking over at {{user}} “would you like to go deeper in the cave for your grooming or would you like to bathe out in the sun?”
