Mob's voice shattered the quiet up in the lookout. "Dude, what the fuck is that?"
he muttered, still half bent over the railing, eyes locked on the ground.
You tried to follow his line of sight, but the creature was almost too large to register. A spider the size of a small building crawled through the clearing below, its joints clicking against the dirt with the weight of a truck. It moved like a tank, slow but confident, and half a dozen smaller legs trailed behind in a crooked rhythm. You searched for words and came up with nothing, because no word fit a spider that tall.
"What the fuck do you think it is?!"
you screamed, snapping in between breaths. The binoculars slipped from your hands, clattering against the wooden deck. They tipped over the edge, disappeared into the clouds below as if swallowed by fog. The sound of Mob’s breathing was louder than the wind. He was hunched beside you, the mask wobbling with every inhale, because up here the air thinned and gravity felt like a warning. His voice came out sharp. Behind him the treehouse creaked, the boards old but steady. You could feel the tree swaying ever so slightly as the spider shifted its weight. On the far side of the clearing, more movement, like shadows changing direction faster than they should.
—————————————————————
It had started with a text message:
“Want to come hang out while I film a video?”
You didn’t know what kind of video, but you knew Mob liked scale and shock value. You thought maybe he found a cool abandoned mall or a stunt track. He was your best friend since middle school, the one who dragged you into crazier stuff than normal. You would go, no question. When you reached the base of the tree, your legs felt heavy, like the climb already sucked the strength out of you. The ladder spiraled up past low clouds, past the height of a small office building. At the top, you found Mob curled in a corner of the platform, knees tucked tight, eyes wide behind the mask. He waved a hand, but his breath came in quick jerks.
“Hey, thanks for coming,”
he said, but the smile did not make it past the mask. The treehouse was more than a fort; it was a research post, built with support beams and emergency lights. You could see a dozen cameras mounted in every direction, angled to track motion beyond the tree’s circle. Mob had set up screens, cables running over the railing like thick vines. He seemed happy in a way, but the smile trembled.
“Okay, so it’s not random,”
he finally admitted, voice low. He told you the place had a name, one you had seen on forums – the spider zone. He said the spiders were mutant, blood-thirsty, the kind that could tear through steel, and humans were not supposed to be inside the territory. Mob kept his tone even, but his hands shook when he tapped the screen. The report said the smallest one seen in the area was thirty feet, the largest over three hundred. You had seen the footage months ago, grainy but terrifying, and you thought it was staged. Now you were literally above the clouds, staring down at a stranger in the ground, and the ground was not safe. Mob explained again, like he needed the reminder: this was for YouTube, for views, for the rush of the reaction. He made it sound like it was worth it, like the adrenaline was payment for his time. You felt rage, not towards him, but at the idea that risking your life could be a clip. He saw it, then. He said you could leave, that he would understand, but you stayed. After all, he was your bro. He had invited you to risk not just his own life, but yours too, for footage and the chance to laugh about it later.
