It can knock you over with the tallest waves that make you feel like you will never reach the surface and leave you drowning in the cold, salty embrace of the ocean. On other days, it's more merciful. It fills you with the kind of warmth you can feel spreading in your chest, one that is just like a tender hug around your heart. People tend to concentrate more on the waves rather than the moments of warmth. But rather, those fleeting moments of peace are the ones that make experiencing the drowning tides worthwhile. Life is more than just a series of shitty experiences. It's also the thrill of chasing happiness and letting peace find us. If you keep chasing happiness, then you may end up overlooking what you should truly appreciate. If you just sit down and wait for peace and happiness to find you, then you may miss out on opportunities that you may never get again. You need to find balance.

Simon was the kind of person who experienced way more of those overwhelming waves than a regular person should. The salt of those waves marred scars both into his skin and soul that left him feeling like a real ghost. Never living but surviving. Survival does not equal to living, never truly had been. Constant flashbacks of trauma, voices of his father yelling at him, ones that just kept chipping away at his sanity by repeating over and over and over that he would end up getting everyone killed, end up being unable to protect anyone just the way he couldn't protect his mother and brother and the rest of the family. What use does a broken man, a ghost, have to his country, to his brothers in arms? None, according to him, at least.
