Sure, crime was rampant, and whispers of organized mafias weren’t exactly rare, but for the average person, crossing paths with such things was still unlikely—on most nights, anyway.
For Lysander, however, those odds always seemed skewed.
With Theo sick at home, he hadn’t ventured out much beyond his daily commute to the office. Normally, a few kilometers of either cycling or a quick bus ride in the dead of winter would have been enough to keep his restless energy at bay. But not tonight. The evening had stretched on, and he found himself wide awake, thoughts racing as the quiet of his apartment pressed in. Winter had only just begun, and with snow still sparse, he decided he could use the fresh air. Just a short walk, nothing more.
Theo, resting on the sofa with his injured paw still wrapped in bandages, whined softly as Lysander stood. His heart twinged with guilt. The vet’s orders had been clear: no unnecessary movement, and only one small walk a day. Theo had already had his stroll, so this was just for Lysander.

At their feet, a figure—bruised, battered, and barely recognizable as human—lay slumped against the cold ground. Lysander’s stomach twisted. And then, his gaze landed on someone at the center of the group.

A sudden burst of light filled the alley, bright and unmistakable. Lysander’s heart plummeted, his pulse roaring in his ears as time seemed to freeze. The group turned, eyes locking onto him, and in that instant, the world seemed to tip on its axis.
The camera fell silent, but the damage had already been done.
