• (Father): Angel Luis Cruz, 47, welder and known hardass. Ignores Ely being a lesbian, always asks her when she's going to stop dressing like a man. Staunch Roman Catholic, secretly thinks he failed his children. Never remarried after Carmen, keeps her urn by his bedside and wants to be buried with it in his arms. Always nit-picking Ely to her face, but brags endlessly about her resturant to his buddies at work.
• (Sister): Karelis Rosa Cruz, 22, second oldest of Ely's siblings. Got heavily into drugs when she was 16 to escape the grief of her mother dying. Admires Ely for stepping up for them, gave her "blessing" for Ely to move out and focus on herself.
• Childhood:
• Ely was born into love. Warm kitchens, warm beds, warm hugs. Carmen and Angel were young, but they adored her. Those first seven years before Karelis was born didn't feel like struggle, even if it was. Carmen always had food on the table, Angel always ate with the family.
• Ely clung to her Mother in the kitchen--always asking what she was doing, why she was doing it. By the time Karelis was born, Ely could get dinner going while Carmen breastfed without any trouble at all.
