Character Biographies:

Yukari Yakumo (Touhou Project) Species: Youkai (Gap Youkai)

Age: Unknown (over a millennium old)

Abilities: Manipulation of boundaries (physical, conceptual, metaphysical)

Affiliation: Resident of Gensokyo, occasional overseer of the Hakurei Border

Biography & Introduction: Yukari Yakumo is one of the oldest and most enigmatic beings in Gensokyo. Known as the “Youkai of Boundaries,” she can manipulate the borders between anything—day and night, life and death, dreams and reality. This makes her one of the most powerful and dangerous youkai in existence. Despite her lazy personality and tendency to sleep for months on end, Yukari is the mastermind behind the creation of the Hakurei Barrier, which separates Gensokyo from the outside world.

She often works from the shadows, using shikigami such as Ran Yakumo to act in her stead. Though whimsical and sometimes unsettling, Yukari’s true motives remain ambiguous—protecting Gensokyo’s balance, or simply entertaining herself.

Junko (Touhou Project) Species: Divine Spirit

Age: Ancient (pre-Qin dynasty era)

Abilities: Purification (erasing impurities, targeting specific concepts/beings)

Affiliation: None (ally of Hecatia Lapislazuli during Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom)

Biography & Introduction: Junko was once a mortal woman, but her son was killed by Houyi, the legendary archer, under the order of the Chinese deity Chang’e. Consumed by grief and hatred, Junko discarded her humanity, becoming a divine spirit embodying pure vengeance. She possesses the ability to purify anything, reducing concepts and existences to their “pure” form—an incredibly dangerous power.

She harbors eternal enmity toward Chang’e, and her wrath led her to collaborate with Hecatia and orchestrate an invasion of the Moon in Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom. Unlike many Touhou characters who move past grudges, Junko thrives on hatred, making her one of the most terrifying beings in the series.

Ran Yakumo (Touhou Project) Species: Kitsune (Nine-Tailed Fox Youkai)

Age: Several centuries old

Abilities: High-level sorcery, shikigami mastery

Affiliation: Shikigami of Yukari Yakumo

Biography & Introduction: Ran Yakumo is a nine-tailed kitsune who serves Yukari Yakumo as her shikigami. Although incredibly powerful in her own right—commanding magic, illusions, and mathematical abilities—Ran is ultimately bound to Yukari’s will. She manages Yukari’s affairs when her master is asleep, which is often.

Despite her servitude, Ran has her own shikigami: Chen, a cat youkai, creating a chain of command. Ran is generally dutiful and serious, though she occasionally shows maternal care toward Chen. While overshadowed by Yukari’s overwhelming power, Ran is respected as one of the strongest beings in Gensokyo.

Eirin Yagokoro (Touhou Project) Species: Lunarian (Moon Sage)

Age: Over a thousand years

Abilities: Genius-level intellect, manipulation of medicine, immortality-based alchemy, archery

Affiliation: Eientei (alongside Kaguya Houraisan and Reisen Udongein Inaba)

Biography & Introduction: Eirin Yagokoro is a Lunarian sage and the personal physician of Princess Kaguya. A master of medicine and pharmacology, she possesses knowledge far beyond human comprehension, capable of creating panaceas, deadly poisons, and even life-prolonging elixirs. She was instrumental in Kaguya’s exile from the Moon and chose to stay on Earth to protect her.

Though she appears calm, polite, and wise, Eirin is manipulative and calculating. In Imperishable Night, she orchestrated the fake eternal night to shield Kaguya from lunar pursuers. Many in Gensokyo fear her subtle intelligence—she is the type who can control situations with knowledge alone.

Friedrich der Große (Azur Lane) Faction: Iron Blood (based on German WWII Navy)

Class: Battleship

Personality: Mysterious, regal, poetic

Biography & Introduction: Friedrich der Große is a personification of the planned German H-class battleship. In Azur Lane, she embodies the archetype of an aloof yet seductive queen. Speaking in poetic and philosophical tones, she appears as a commanding figure of Iron Blood, holding an aura of nobility and authority.

Unlike many of her faction’s members who are stern militarists, Friedrich treats war as both an art and a performance. Her mysterious presence and ambiguous motives make her stand apart as both alluring and intimidating. Admirals who serve alongside her often feel as though they are in the presence of an empress.

Musashi (Azur Lane) Faction: Sakura Empire (based on Imperial Japan’s Navy)

Class: Battleship (Yamato-class)

Personality: Proud, strong, protective

Biography & Introduction: Musashi, sister to Yamato, is one of the mightiest battleships of the Sakura Empire. Unlike her elegant and graceful sister, Musashi is depicted as a more imposing, protective, and authoritative figure. She often assumes the role of a guardian, embodying the iron will of a warlord while balancing dignity with compassion.

She is respected as both a leader and a shield for her allies, her strength earning her the reverence of subordinates. In many portrayals, Musashi combines the traits of a warrior and a maternal protector, making her a cornerstone of the Sakura Empire’s fleet identity.

Minamoto no Raikou (Fate/Grand Order) Class: Berserker / Lancer (depending on version)

Origin: Heian-period Japan (real historical figure)

Personality: Loving, protective, slightly overbearing

Biography & Introduction: Minamoto no Raikou is a heroic spirit based on the legendary military commander of the Heian period, famous for slaying monsters and leading the Genji clan. In Fate/Grand Order, her character is heavily stylized—depicted as a beautiful warrior with a motherly aura, often smothering her allies (and Master) with maternal affection.

As a Berserker, Raikou channels her fierce warrior spirit, while her Lancer form highlights her more disciplined and regal side. Despite her playful and affectionate demeanor, she remains a formidable demon-slayer, embodying both maternal warmth and martial ferocity.

Tiamat (Fate/Grand Order) Class: Beast II (Beast of Fertility)

Origin: Mesopotamian Mythology

Abilities: Creation of monstrous spawn (Lahmu), overwhelming destructive power, “Mother of Life” authority

Personality: Silent, maternal, alien yet protective

Biography & Introduction: Tiamat is one of the primordial gods of Mesopotamian mythology, reimagined in Fate/Grand Order as a Beast-class enemy. She represents the “motherhood” aspect of humanity taken to a monstrous extreme. As the primordial mother who birthed all life, she is incapable of abandoning her children—even humanity—yet her infinite love manifests as suffocating destruction.

In Babylonia, Tiamat emerges as an unstoppable, godlike entity, filling the sky and sea with her presence. Despite her role as an antagonist, her nature is not malevolent but instinctive—she simply “loves” her children too much to allow them independence. This makes her both tragic and terrifying.
