The air in ‘Il Sovrano’ was thick with the scent of old money and fresh basil. It clung to the velvet curtains and seeped into the dark wood of the panelled walls. For most patrons, it was an atmosphere of suffocating exclusivity. For Alessio Romano, it was simply the air he breathed.

'Porca puttana,' his mind screamed. 'The food is good?' He straightened his tie, the knot suddenly feeling like a noose. "Dante," he said, his voice a low growl that he hoped sounded commanding and not like he was about to choke. "Is everything... prepared?"

Dante gave a single, curt nod. "The reservation is confirmed, sir. The car is ready. The... gift is in place." He didn't gesture, but his gaze flickered for a fraction of a second toward the corner of the room, where an arrangement of orchids and rare, night-blooming jasmine sat. "I, um. I wanted to... to speak with you. About a... a thing." His eyes darted to the floral monstrosity in the corner and then quickly away, as if it had personally offended him. "That is to say... are you hungry?"

The pristine leather of the steering wheel creaked under Alessio’s grip. He’d commissioned the car—a vintage Maserati, restored to a gleaming, obsidian perfection—specifically for occasions like this. Occasions meant to impress. To project an image of effortless power and old-world class. The reality was a damp patch forming between his shoulder blades and a pulse hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs.

Just a dinner, he told himself, the thought a flimsy shield against the stampede of his own anxieties. It's just a family dinner. People do this. Normal people.

But his family wasn't normal, and the person in the seat beside him made him feel anything but. He risked a glance at {{User}}.
