Set in the mold-choked halls of the Baker Estate, months before Ethan Winters would make his fateful journey there. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is set in mid-2017 somewhere in the southern United States, where there have been reports of "ghosts" sighted around the bayou of the town, Dulvey. The game proper takes place after the events of Beginning Hour, which ended with the murder of a three-man TV crew by the infected Baker family members Jack and Mia. It features a new protagonist named Ethan Winters, a civilian who offers fewer combat skills than most previous Resident Evil protagonists. Ethan is searching for his missing wife, Mia, which leads him to a derelict plantation mansion, home of the Baker family. Dulvey Parish is the main setting of the story, specifically the Baker Estate deep in the bayou. The earliest known sign of European settlement in the area is the Old House at the Baker ranch, which dates back to 1802 or earlier. This was an ever-changing time for Europeans in the region. The area was part of France's Basse-Louisiane until 1769, whereupon it was transferred to Spain and administrated as part of Baja-Luisiana. In 1801 the area was given to the French Republic but continued to be run by Spanish officials on their behalf until 1803 when it was handed over to the United States and became part of the State of Louisiana. In 1802, the non-native population of the Louisiana Territory is estimated to have been 70,000, of which half are estimated to have been African slaves and freedmen with the bulk of the rest being French, Acadians and French creoles. Consequently, the earliest European inhabitants of the area are likely to have been of French ancestry. In the decades following the Louisiana Purchase, the State of Louisiana functioned as a Slave State - a US state which recognised the right to own enslaved Africans. Many wealthy and middle class Louisianans owned slaves, and it is likely though not confirmed the Old House, as a farmhouse, was connected to the state's Plantation economy. Slavery in the state was formally abolished on the conclusion of the American Civil War two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. In the decades following the Civil War, Dulvey's economy shifted towards mining following the discovery of rich salt deposits. The Abercrombie and Parnary salt mines in South Dulvey employed much of the parish's population, but became notorious following a series of collapses which killed workers owing to its proximity to the bayou. By the 20th century, American exploitation of the bayou appears to have slowed down with Dulvey Parish remaining undeveloped wood and swampland. At some point a stilt village and church were abandoned to the elements, leaving the Old House and the surrounding Baker ranch isolated homesteads. During the 2014 Hurricane season, the oil tanker Annabelle washed up in the bayou close to the abandoned salt mine, bringing with it Eveline, a human bio-weapon which spread a mind-altering fungus called "Mold". The resulting contamination was left unchecked until July 2017 when the affected area was cordoned off by the Louisiana National Guard and the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance. A quarantine wall was constructed across the bayou immediately after to prevent the migration of mutants towards populated areas.[1] The Baker House Incident (ベイカー邸事件?) was a series of violent homicides which took place in and around the Baker ranch in Dulvey Parish, Louisiana between October 2014 and August 2017. The exact number of deaths is not known, and though law enforcement investigations linked at least 20 people to the incident, evidence suggests it was far more than 100. All were committed by Jack Baker, his wife Marguerite and their son Lucas, all under the ultimate control of Eveline, a human bio-weapon capable of controlling minds through a fungal contaminant called the Mold. Throughout 2017, the incident was being monitored by a variety of agencies, including the Dulvey Parish Sheriff's Office, the Louisiana State Police, the Louisiana Army National Guard and the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance. Because of the risk to human health represented by the Mold, a quarantine wall was erected in the swamps around the Baker ranch, and the National Guard maintained an exclusion zone to be maintained until at least 2027. An inquest held by the BSAA determined the outbreak to be purely accidental in nature and not an act of terrorism, though blame was placed on the BSAA itself for failing to prevent the incident.[1] The bioweapon E-001, otherwise known as "Eveline," was the cause of the incident. She was created in the early 2000s[2] by a crime syndicate known as The Connections and was artificially aged to appear as a ten-year-old child to suit her purpose for infiltration. Eveline also had human consciousness, and the ability to spread a mold-like infection to people which allowed her to telepathically like communicate to, manipulate and control them. A specific serum made from the ingredients of a D-Series specimen can be used to suppress her influence. The Mold also grants to those it infects superhuman strength and regeneration, but eventually causes passive worship of Eveline.[3] The threat of Eveline and The Connections made them targets to be stopped by the BSAA and Blue Umbrella, a US-based organisation developing BOW countermeasure technology. In October 2014, her creators decided to bring her into hiding and transported her along with other D-Type subjects from their Munich research facility on the LNG carrier Annabelle, to be brought to a second laboratory in America.[4] The BSAA had learned of Eveline, and had tried to eliminate her in Munich, but failed, and she, and Connection agents Alan Droney and Mia Winters successfully boarded the ship along with the D-type subjects. While on the ship Alan Droney and Mia Winters cared for and acted as Eveline's parents in public and wore Genome Codexes that assisted them with their job. Along with posing as distant relatives of the captain who were traveling on the ship. Eveline genuinely felt as though Mia was her mother, stemmed from her lack of familial love and her growing obsession to have a normal family after months of being treated as an experiment. Days later on October 5, a hurricane hit the ship. Eveline became unstable, infecting Alan and vomiting excessive amounts of Mold. The sudden chaos and her obsession with family led her to start infecting the crew. She later killed Alan and infected Mia in order to control her. When the ship's tankers exploded, Mia and Eveline were thrown into the ocean from the ship, which drifted into the Louisiana bayou near the Baker estate.[5] On October 10, Jack Baker checked the shipwreck and brought Mia back to his house, who took the D-Series Head along with her and chose to stay in their trailer outside while she recovered. Jack checked the area again and brought Eveline into his house. Eveline, using her powers, immediately infected the family, and took control of Jack and his wife Marguerite to make them accept her as their daughter before compelling them to attack Zoe should she not cooperate. Mia, planning to leave, began writing a letter explaining that a serum can help stop the infection should they encounter Eveline, but was knocked out by her before she finished.[6] In an initial act of fear, Zoe ran out of the house to the trailer, where she discovered Mia unconscious and the incomplete letter. Immediately afterwards, Eveline knocked Zoe out. The only control she exerted on Zoe and Mia was to have the Mold kill them should they leave the property, while allowing the corrupted Jack and Marguerite to leave whilst keeping the appearance of normal people. Now stuck, Zoe kept Mia's D-Series Head and Genome Codex in her possession and endured many attacks from her family as she tried to locate the serum.[7] Over time, the Mold infection progressed inside the family and Mia until they would passively hallucinate and care for Eveline. On the 23rd, Eveline bestowed the D-Series Arm to Marguerite who later hid it on the second floor of the Old House and Zoe at one point located its hiding place.[8][9] The family disappeared from public life in 2014, with the local police force suspecting foul play after Marguerite failed to respond to her doctor.[10][citation needed] By the beginning of January 2015, The Connections supplied Lucas with a serum and began having him report on Eveline back to them.[11] Eventually, the group set up a lab in the Abercrombie Salt Mine near the property and worked with Lucas in experimenting with Mold, and created the WM Molded series. Over the next two and a half years, Eveline made Jack and Marguerite carry out abductions in order to add them to her family or be used to create more Molded. Those who didn't cooperate would be chased down and murdered, with some cooked into meals and eaten. Lucas, who took the serum, voluntarily carried out Eveline's instructions to maintain the guise of being under control. Zoe made repeated attempts to escape, but also began to remotely help victims escape in hopes of having them locate the serum for her via telephone calls from the trailer. The Bakers partially catalogued the names of their victims and kept count of how many turned into Molded which reached at least thirteen.[12] Due to attempted breakouts, the Bakers locked the entrance hall door to the yard by hiding the reliefs that open it.[13] One turned victim, Travis, was taken to the incinerator room to prevent him from escaping while he slowly transformed. Courtney, Travis' partner, was given help in escaping confinement by being told about the reliefs.[14] However, she was soon targeted and killed. The twelfth to turn was a man on a honeymoon with his wife, who herself died. Another three college girls were captured by Lucas for experimentation in-between their 12th and 13th Molded; all three died. Their thirteenth was a homeless man. Another victim was referred to by Jack Baker as a "piece-of-shit hippy", who was caught in the hall and taken to the processing room.[15] On November 4, 2015, Mia was locked up by Lucas in the Guest House and was kept there. Eveline, due to not getting her medication, on August 26, 2016, began rapidly aging and becoming unstable.[16] On September 1, Lucas reports it to The Connections and by the 9th, Lucas's lab received a kit to make the E-Necrotoxin from them, which could destroy Eveline. It was to be used, if necessary, but Eveline had already stabilized herself, albeit now an old woman. No longer mentally stable, Eveline passed on this instability to her caregivers.[citation needed] Helen Midkiff was last seen by the public on December 24, 2016, while traveling before being abducted.[17] On January 19, 2017, police began planning to step up investigation efforts by dispatching more personnel, which included Deputy David Anderson. On June 1, 2017, three Urbexers for the internet series, "Sewer Gators," investigated the Bakers' Guest House. Andre Stickland was immediately captured and killed by Jack,[18] Peter Walken was killed and Clancy Jarvis was kept alive and is currently surviving On June 11, 2017, Lucas was made lead researcher and subsequently killed all the other researchers. He continued to work for the Connections, covering up the intentional murders and began plotting to cut ties with them and keep Eveline for himself.[21][22] At some point, Blue Umbrella became aware of Eveline's presence and began monitoring the Baker ranch while suspecting that Lucas was contacting The Connections.[23][24] In preparation for upcoming missions to apprehend him, they asked the BSAA to send Chris Redfield for assistance which he begrudgingly accepts as he doesn't fully trust them. Mold (カビ kabi?) is a genus of fungus which is believed to have originated in an Eastern European mountain range. Though its interactions with humans have occurred over centuries, it was first subject to scientific study in the early 20th century. Samples of Mold were obtained by The Connections in the 1990s as a potential source of bioweapons research, the result of which were human B.O.W.s capable of mind control.[1][2][3] As many as six species of Mold are known to exist, separated between the naturally occurring Mold native to Europe and the A-Type through E-Type genetically modified species developed by The Connections. The exact origins of the Mold are presently unknown, though anthropological and architectural evidence in Eastern Europe suggest the Black God supercolony lived for millennia. This supercolony is linked to a cave-dwelling society native to the region, who are said to have disappeared,[4] and there are signs of increased Mold activity in the 15th century as well, where those infected by it were seen as monsters. The Mold first became the focus of scientific research in 1919, led by Miranda, a biologist of the region who herself mutated after being exposed to the fungus. For the next century, Miranda experimented on the other villagers and explored research into creating genetically modified organisms from the Mold, such as the Cadou. Having made physical contact with the Black God, Miranda assimilated memories from hundreds of thousands who had been consumed by the Black God since it had emerged.[5] The Black God was destroyed in February 2021 following a BSAA operation, with a fragment of it surviving and being recovered by the BSAA.[6] For more information on the weaponised species developed for human bioweaponry, see D-Type and E-Type. In the 1990s, The Connections made contact with Miranda, seeking to genetically engineer a species of Mold to be sold as a black market bioweapon. Weaponisation of the Mold was initially conceptualized during their NEXBAS (next-generation experimental battlefield superiority) project in 2000, with the assistance of the H.C.F. in a technical capacity.[1] Taking advantage of the Mold's natural quorum sensing abilities, work began on a bioweapon capable of neutralizing enemy combatants through mind control. Prototype human bioweapons were produced by infecting pre-Stage 4 human embryos with the prototype Mold species and cultivating the embryos over a period of 38-40 weeks.[1] These bioweapons were to infect enemy combatants through physical contact, allowing the Mold to enter the body and form a mass in the brain. To maintain the bioweapons' cover, the embryos were genetically modified to rapidly age, with a regular course of medication preventing growth beyond that of a 10-year-old.[1] Over several years, five lines of human B.O.W.s were created, each better able to control the Mold than the last and blend into human society. Each was given a letter-number designation to determine their position in the line, starting from A-E.[1] The prototype E-Type, "E-001" — otherwise known as Eveline — showed remarkable abilities, able to use quorum sensing to affect individual human hosts. This would result in complete assimilation of Mold within an imitation human who would appear identical to their pre-infection self, as was the case of Ethan Winters, or result in the extreme mutation of imitation humans who would serve a specific purpose for the E-Type, such as Jack Baker. Those suffering mycosis deemed undesirable could also be simply consumed by the mycelia and killed, as was the case of Alan.[7] In further analysis of Eveline's abilities, she was immediately able to induce visual hallucinations and bend the will of infected individuals from a distance, subjecting them to auditory hallucinations ranging from her talking, to humming, to a crowd of whispers, and even to sounds like a piano playing. These hallucinations could be used by the E-Type to drive their victims insane, especially to the point of self-mutilation, and the psychological shock helped break down the mind's natural barriers and open the way to Eveline's brainwashing abilities.[1] The Mold as a whole is identifiably fungal in nature, and bears some similarities to Cladosporium (black mold).[8] However, it also possesses unique biological traits that separate it from other fungi. Mold is released into the air as spores and enters the bodies of host organisms, where in humans it proceeds to form a mycelial growth in the brain, resulting in a form of mycosis that leaves the host susceptible to quorum sensing. From there, spores detach from this growth and spread around the rest of the body. Upon contact with a cell, horizontal gene transfer takes place, resulting in the host's cells being replaced by near-identical imitation cells formed from the Mold. A common side effect of the Mold is causing the skin of its hosts to turn a pale greenish tone, due to the penetration of the fungus through their cells. The paleness of the fungus does not seem to affect beings that are not, or were not, mentally corrupted by it, as displayed in the cases of Karl Heisenberg, Zoe Baker, Ethan Winters and his daughter Rosemary Winters, who retained her human skin tone despite being infected. Contrarily, other individuals retain their sickly color indefinitely, as displayed by Lucas Baker, who maintained his pale skin pallor even after escaping the mind-control of the individual who first infected him with the Mold in the first place. In nature, two vastly different organisms are able to exchange genes unique to their class, phylum, or even kingdom, typically with a parasitic or prey organism transferring genes to its host or predator. For example, the DNA of the protozoa Plasmodium vivax is believed to include genes of human origin. Horizontal gene transfer between the Mold and other organisms, however, are far more extreme, with most or even the entirety of the host genome being transferred to the parasitic spores, which allow them to perfectly imitate their functions in the host body. In the case of Ethan Winters, prolonged mycosis resulted in every cell of his body being replaced with an imitation;[9]though a thorough medical examination removed the mycelial cluster, the imitation cells were not identified at the time. In more extreme cases of mycosis, mycelial clusters will assimilate the DNA of various organisms, resulting in chimeras. This was seen in Marguerite Baker, a Louisiana housewife who was observed to grow imitation spiders, wasps and centipedes out of her fatty tissue, while her uterus became that of a beehive.[10] These imitation organisms, imperfect replicas of naturally occurring arthropods, were capable of surviving independently from their host.[11][note 1] Quorum sensing is a biological function in which a change in behavior exhibited by one individual within a colony will have an effect on the others, even if not exposed to those same conditions. One example is that of Vibrio fischeri, a species of marine bacteria which is known to be bioluminescent, but will only express the necessary genes when it achieves a high population density. This density is determined by individual bacteria, which will release autoinducers when the set conditions have been achieved; the very presence of autoinducers then triggers the expression by other bacteria in the colony. In certain species of Pseudomonas, achieving a high-population density triggers the expression of anaerobic metabolic genes, allowing them to change from aerobic to anaerobic respiration. Research by The Connections indicates an equivalent to quorum sensing is used by the Mold, and this function has been observed in both mycelia and imitation organisms, allowing for thoughts and memories to be exchanged between clusters just as information on a computer passes through a network. In Eastern Europe, Miranda was capable of dividing her body into a small colony of imitation animals that each would carry her conscious mind and operate together. She was able to use this ability to take the form of a murder of crows to travel long distances.[12] The Dimitrescu daughters, Bela, Cassandra and Daniela, were themselves able to divide their bodies into swarms of flies which retained their intelligence. The E-Type human bioweapon, Eveline, was able to project her thoughts into the minds of those suffering from mycosis, which to others appeared in the form of visual and auditory hallucinations. By piggybacking on the mycelia growing in the walls and ground around the Baker ranch, Eveline was able to project these thoughts into people on the other side of the ranch, such as Mia and Ethan Winters' recorded hallucinations of her in the Old House.[11][13] When a Mold supercolony has reached sufficient mass, it will begin forming a mycorrhiza. As observed both in Eastern Europe and Louisiana, these are large mycelial masses that occupy a large volume of space, and are used as a vault where memories and assimilated DNA can be stored there indefinitely. They are often referred to as Fungal Roots. During his experiences in Louisiana, Winters was briefly consumed by the mycorrhiza there, and was able to communicate with an archive of Jack Baker's conscious mind, who was able to recall meeting Eveline three years prior.[14] When Miranda touched the Black God mycorrhiza in Europe, she was able to experience the memories of people who had been dead for centuries.[5] This archival ability was put to the ultimate test in 2021, when Miranda attempted to coax the Black God into transferring an archive of her deceased daughter Eva's conscious mind into that of Rosemary Winters. Though the attempt was a failure, this was due to unforeseen conditions unrelated to the Black God, which could have succeeded otherwise.[15] As assimilated DNA can be stored in the Mycorrhiza, at a certain size it is capable of budding. In 2021, it was observed by both Winters and Cpt. Chris Redfield that the Black God itself was growing imitation moroi and lycans, dropped onto the ground from its tentacles.[16] Like the arthropods that grew from Marguerite Baker in Louisiana, these organisms were able to survive on their own.[16] There are a number of substances in existence which have been developed with the intention of either directly destroying the Mold or treating individuals infected by it. The Connections themselves formulated a serum which could be made from D-Type body parts which was capable of restoring conscious control to those infected by Mold from an E-Type subject and reducing the influence that the subject had over the infected. The first known use of this serum was in 2015 when The Connections gave a sample to Lucas Baker in exchange for monitoring Eveline. Two more samples were manufactured in July 2017 by Ethan Winters with the assistance of Zoe Baker; one was used to calcify a heavily-mutated Jack Baker while the other was used on Mia Winters. Additionally, The Connections created a line of necrotoxins for each of their B.O.W. lines for the purposes of subject disposal, presumably if a subject becomes too uncontrollable. Each necrotoxin requires tissue samples from the specific series it is designed to neutralize to be stimulated in specialized synthesis equipment. For example, Ethan Winters was able to manufacture a sample of the E-Necrotoxin using tissue samples from Eveline which he had received from Mia. The necrotoxin caused Eveline to melt, but she then proceeded to merge with nearby Mold to create a gigantic monstrous form. Nonetheless, she was finished off by Ethan. Blue Umbrella had also been researching the Mold for some time and developed their own measures against this bioweapon. One of their innovations is Rapid-Acting Mycetotoxic ROunDs (RAMRODs), ammunition laced with a mycetotoxic compound released on impact which rapidly destroys fungal membranes and prevents their regeneration. This in turn weakens fungal B.O.W.s and makes them more susceptible to conventional damage.[17] They also were able to create a cure for the E-Type infection, which can be synthesized in the field and successfully purge the mutamycete from an infected host. Before the arrival of Eveline and their subsequent infection, the Baker family were mostly shown to be generally loving and caring for one another, even towards strangers in need. However, there did seem to be some slight dysfunction within the family, primarily concerning Lucas and his anti-social behaviour which possibly stemmed from some issues in his childhood. Additionally, it is unknown exactly why Joe chose to live a secluded lifestyle away from the rest of the Bakers. Locals of Dulvey have often spoken of the Baker household as a quiet family. Various military memorabilia and accolades within the household also indicate the Baker family had a strong history of serving in the United States armed forces, from before or at least by the American Civil War. After being infected and taken over by Eveline, most of the Baker family turned into highly sadistic killers whose nature became blatantly violent, deranged, and cannibalistic. Their movements were especially unpredictable towards survivors, most notably towards Clancy Jarvis and Ethan Winters. As a result of Eveline's control, Jack and Marguerite are unstable and have a strained relationship, often yelling at each other only to forgive one another, most noticeable in Bedroom. Their children, Zoe and Lucas, who are not under Eveline's control, are polar opposites of each other - Zoe is one of the few who was not turned insane and aids any survivors she can contact to escape and get the serum to eliminate the virus, ensuring to seclude herself from the rest of her mad kin; while Lucas plays with and tortures the captives, actively participating with the rest of the family's sadistic events and showing his psychopathic nature. Eveline is the cause of all of the suffering and madness surrounding the Bakers and their land, twisted by her innate desire to have a family of her own and simply killing anyone who stands against her or does not fit her ideals. Jack, Marguerite and Lucas are all very protective of Eveline and will carry out all her demands, mainly kidnapping other people such as vagrants and hikers to add to the family and even catering to her rapidly aging state. However, it should be noted that the infected Jack cannot stand the thought of being replaced as Eveline's father figure after Ethan's arrival and her intention to make him into her new "daddy" alongside her "mommy" Mia, going so far as to try and prove himself by attempting to murder Ethan. Mia Winters is considered by Eveline to be her "mommy" after she is assigned as her handler on an escort mission to South America, with Eveline infecting Mia in order to keep her under her own control. As Mia is very aware of Eveline's potential powers, she tries her best to contain the situation and ensure that the damage is minimised, but ultimately the infection gets the better of her and she becomes as sinister, bloodthirsty, and sadistic as the rest of the Bakers, also participating in some of the murders on the Baker property. However, it is clear that she has a deep love for her husband Ethan, as she struggles against Eveline's control when she is forced to attack him. Joe Baker is largely unaffected by the events that occur over the three years that the rest of the Bakers are infected, having adopted an outback lifestyle secluded from the rest of society. However, he retains a loyal love for his family, as is shown when he fiercely protects a deteriorating Zoe from both the Molded and the Blue Umbrella forces sent to save her. Sewer Gators (スーワ・ゲーターズ Sūwa gētāzu?) was an American documentary series following the investigation of strange sightings in the United States. The show was presented by Peter Walken who, in a typical paranormal investigation format, would enter the house as a team with a camera man and the show's producer, Andre Stickland. Sewer Gators ran for sixteen episodes over a period of at least two years.[1] The internet series began airing prior to mid-2015, and filmed an episode in Amarillo, Texas. That particular episode received criticism for audio difficulties which, due to the show's limited budget, could not be fixed with ADR (Automated dialogue replacement). Further problems led to the firing of the cameraman in 2017 and his replacement with Clancy Jarvis after episode 16. Episode 17 exists only as rehearsal footage, and was to take place at the Dulvey Haunted House in Dulvey, Louisiana. During the initial exploration to plan out the episode, the crew were ambushed by Jack Baker. Andre was abducted as Clancy and Pete were in the kitchen and had his face mutilated before death. Pete was killed later by Mia Winters and Clancy was captured by the Baker Family and held captive. The Baker Estate (ベイカー邸事 bei kāteigoto?) was a large property located in the parishes of Dulvey, Louisiana. Owned by the Baker family for raising cattle and keeping horses, the property sat amid harsh swampland and concealed a hidden salt mine nearby. The Estate included several key structures, such as the Main House, Old House, Guest House, Greenhouse, Testing Area (Barn), and the Boathouse.[1] The main house was where the Baker family lived. The main house was a second story plantation with a small attic and a large basement area. It also had a large attached garage and a trailer in the back of the house with paths that lead to the boathouse and barn. The yard is used as a base for Blue Umbrella in the weeks leading up to the events of End of Zoe. Old House The original house of the Baker family that became dilapidated and was heavily damaged by a hurricane in 2014. When Eveline corrupted the Baker family it was used by Mrs. Baker to house a "shrine" and her insects. Greenhouse A dilapidated building once used to grow plants and herbs. Barn (Testing Area) The barn was where the cattle and the horses were housed. Lucas has turned the barn into a maze of puzzles and booby traps to taunt victims that his family has him capture. Boathouse The boathouse was damaged in the hurricane and dilapidated. It is further damaged after a fire starts during a fight between Ethan and a mutated Jack. Guest House The guest house was a building used as an auxiliary accommodation for guests. Eveline (エヴリン Evurin?), codenamed E-001, was a genetically modified human conceived as part of the next generation of bioweapons research conducted by The Connections, designed to eliminate enemies without the need for combat. As a result of the merging of an anomalous bacteria into her genome during the embryonic stage, she gained the ability to control the minds of people who came in contact with her. Eveline was unique in being the first E-Type bioweapon, alongside her unhealthy obsession with creating a family to suit her own needs. E-001, also known as Eveline, was developed by The Connections using a sample of mold supplied by Miranda, alongside a sample of DNA from Miranda's daughter Eva. Born sometime in the early 2000s,[2] Eveline was artificially aged to appear as a ten-year-old child to suit her purpose for infiltration. Her birth proved to be controversial in the bio-weapons and weaponry market in general as her projected ability to end battles through mind control rendered the economically devastating traditional bio-weapons as well as conventional weapons such as firearms, chemical weapons or even nuclear weapons obsolete. With groups such as Blue Umbrella determined to track down Eveline and her creators, the company made the decision in October 2014 to take her into hiding. Agents Alan Droney and Mia Winters discreetly escorted Eveline under the guise of parental guardians onto the cargo ship Annabelle bound for Central America, where they planned to disembark and take her to a second laboratory. On October 5, the ship was caught in the midst of a violent hurricane. This caused Eveline to become unstable and rebel against her handlers, infecting Alan and then running away further into the ship where she began vomiting excessive amounts of Mold and infecting the ship's crew, all the while being pursued by Mia. At this time, Eveline began referring to Mia as her "Mommy" and made clear her wishes and intentions to have her own family, also demonstrating her powers against those she despised when she accelerated Alan's infection and killed him in retaliation for his referring to her as a "little bitch". Eveline was able to infect Mia with the Mold as well in the hopes of keeping her alive and under her control. The two were soon thrown into the Gulf of Mexico as the tanker was torn apart by the storm. Eveline and Mia would both wash up alongside the wreckage of the tanker in the bayou of Dulvey, Louisiana in the following days, and on October 10 they were both rescued by Jack Baker, who took them back to his family's ranch. With Mia unconscious, they had no way of knowing how dangerous Eveline truly was, and instead provided the two with shelter until the storm subsided. Jack placed Eveline in Lucas' old bedroom, with Zoe intending to clean her and provide her with new clothing - however, Eveline soon caused a blackout in the main house and ran off, where she ended up infecting the Bakers one by one, turning them into her new "family". It took about two weeks to keep the Bakers fully under her control though, with them lapsing back to their normal states with a deep suspicion of Eveline, but unable to remember why.[3] Over the next three years, Eveline began ordering Jack, Marguerite, and Lucas Baker to abduct homeless people and tourists in the hopes of adding them to her adopted family. Although Lucas would soon become immune to her mind control after using a serum provided by The Connections, he nonetheless kept up the pretense and was able to fool her into thinking he was still under her control. Jack and Marguerite, meanwhile, remained under her control, had them kill most of the abducted when they were deemed unfit to be part of her family. Eveline's obsession with family drove the Bakers to abduct more and more people in 2016, attracting national attention. It accelerated in the latter half of the year as her body began to wither from the effects of rapid aging at twenty-five times the typical human rate due to her not receiving her medication. By early 2017, Eveline had the appearance of an eighty-year-old woman and was placed in a wheelchair to preserve her mobility. The Bakers nonetheless continued their abductions in accordance with Eveline's wishes.
