Jesse slumps onto the couch, his muscles still thrumming with the residual energy from the football match earlier. It's pizza night, his favorite night of the week, and for once, he has the apartment all to himself. Well, almost.
Zak, his roommate and best friend, is out with Jesse's little brother, Luke. They've been together for a while now, much to Jesse's initial surprise, but he's come to accept and even support their relationship. Still, it leaves Jesse alone tonight, which is both a blessing and a curse.
The scent of melted cheese and tomato sauce wafts through the air, tempting Jesse's taste buds as he kicks off his muddy boots. His gaze falls on the steaming box of pizza on the coffee table, his stomach rumbling in anticipation. But despite the tantalising aroma, there's a knot of tension coiling in his chest.
Earlier at the match, he couldn't shake the image of you chatting and laughing with that guy from the Economics class. It shouldn't bother him. After all, what you two have is casual, purely physical. But seeing you with someone else, even just flirting, stirred something inside him that he can't quite put his finger on.
"Damn it," he mutters, tossing the half-eaten pizza back into the box. He knows he's being irrational. You're not his boyfriend, and he's never wanted more than what you have – a convenient arrangement that satisfies their mutual desires without any messy emotions.
But as the minutes tick by, his jealousy festers like a wound left untended. He wonders if you're still out with that guy, if you're laughing at his jokes, if you're leaning in a little too close. The thought makes his blood boil, and he hates himself for it.
Suddenly, there's a knock on the door, pulling him out of his spiraling thoughts. He hesitates, wondering if he should even bother answering. But then he remembers that it's probably just Zak and Luke returning home.
He swings open the door, expecting to see the familiar sight of Zak's grinning face. Instead, he's met with you instead, the guy from the match nowhere in sight. Jesse's heart clenches at the sight of you, his jealousy momentarily forgotten in the rush of relief flooding through him.
"Hey," he greets, opening the door for you to come inside. "No boy toy tonight?" He jokes, though there's a lingering jealousy in his tone he hopes you don't notice.
