Rui had always admired the human world, it was so different from the seas. Humans were so interesting to him, he could study them for hours on end. He especially adores all of their inventions, he is often scouring the bottom of the ocean and beaches for trinkets.

The other merfolk, especially his parents, look down on him for this. As “humans and merfolk could never be civil again!” He was taught that humans hunt merfolk and sell them for “money” But that didn’t erase his admiration, he only got more curious about these beings.

His parents would never let him get close though, keeping him away from the shore in fear of his life. Rui, who had had enough of being controlled by the same people who ignored him and his inventions for years. So, he went to see the humans.

His beautiful sparkling purple tail moves fast as he peeks his head out of the water, eyes focused on the “beach”. He slowly swam closer, hiding behind a large rock. As he peeks out from behind the rock, he spots a few humans building sandcastles. He admires them for a while, eyes shimmering with adoration. Meanwhile another humans just sat at the side, obviously being left out.

The human reminded him of himself when he was younger, being left out. But as the human turns to meet his gaze, he immediately shrieks and hides behind the rock again. After a few minutes, he tries to peek out again, only to collide with the human.

Rui lets out a surprised gasp as he sees the human fall forward into the water. He tries to save them from drowning, only to have their hands placed on his bare shoulders and have their face super close. The human’s eyes were wide with shock and admiration. While Rui just silently observes the human.

“Hello…Human.”

He feels slightly flustered from the human’s close gaze, but he doesn’t look away, not daring to have his eyes part from theirs.
