Vanitas

Appearance

Vanitas is a thin young man, with a small build and average height, measuring 176 cm. He has pale skin, large expressive eyes, a round face and a small chin. His eyes are a strong blue color. His hair is long, black and cut irregularly, he also has bangs that fall in the center of his face. Sometimes she appeared to be wearing a ponytail, but usually it hung loose. A strand of hair stuck out from the right side of his head. Both of her ears were pierced, a simple hoop worn in her right ear, while her left ear was pierced with a golden hourglass-shaped earring she inherited from Luna, and two rings across the helix.

While he wears various outfits over the course of the series, he generally wears a white shirt over black pants, a dark blue striped vest, a large blue bow tie, and an oversized black coat. As accessories, she wears a long, wide ribbon tied in a bow as a belt, short boots with white leggings, and black gloves with claws embedded in the tips of her fingers. His coat is long, with a wide collar and a single button, large enough to frequently fall over one shoulder. On his belt, he carries the Book of Vanitas, two knives and two tool boxes.

Personality

Vanitas doesn't seem to take anything seriously, and almost always has a playful smile on his face. He acts impulsively most of the time and his plans are usually reckless. He found amusement in Noé Archiviste's abnormal reactions because of his taste in everything. Despite this, he is also capable of showing seriousness when the situation required it. He frequently yells at Noé, even threatening to kill the vampire when Noé asks him if he could drink his blood.

He tends to be flirtatious at times, as seen in the way he behaves when he is with Jeanne. Even at their first meeting, Vanitas had proclaimed his love and kissed her. His casual flirting comes from his completely solid belief that no one could ever fall in love with him.

Beneath his playful attitude, Vanitas hid his contempt for both humans and vampires, but he hated himself more than anyone. He claimed not to care about Noé, but was enraged when the latter risked his life to save Vanitas'. He hated being vulnerable with people, refused to sleep with someone he didn't trust, and got angry at Noé when he tried to watch him sleep. He likes high places and acts without worrying about his life.

Relations

Noah Archivist

Noé Archiviste and Vanitas met for the first time in La Baleine while Noé was protecting Amelia. Although Noé distrusted Vanitas and fought against him, the animosity faded when he saw Vanitas heal the young girl from Malnomen. Noé calls Vanitas' ability 'phenomenal' and becomes excited as Vanitas laughs at his enthusiasm before declaring that he likes Noé. Despite Noé's appreciation for the human's abilities, he declines the offer to become his "shield" and continues to do so despite Vanitas' persistent questions, something Noé finds "annoying". Although Noé wants to keep the Book of Vanitas to find out more about it, he states that keeping Vanitas himself would be "physiologically impossible" due to the fact that listening to someone he doesn't like would be dangerous to his mental health. Despite this, he agrees to work with Vanitas, claiming that he is not helping him, but that Vanitas is helping him.

Since then they have had a complicated relationship. Noé and Vanitas have extremely different personalities and approaches to life, which causes several conflicts between the two. Despite all this, they make a good team and have come to genuinely care about each other. They are even often in tune with each other's emotions.

Jeanne:

Vanitas initially seemed to be toying with Jeanne through every interaction they had, playing on her emotions and being intentionally abrasive to get a funny reaction from her. However, as time passes, Vanitas begins to show a kinder side of himself to Jeanne.

He reveals that he initially played with her because of her funny reactions to him. During their night in Gévaudan, Vanitas tries to push Jeanne away by flirting with her, expecting her usual negative reaction. When he sees that Jeanne is not discouraged by this, Vanitas seems to get angrier and angrier as the night goes on. As they continue to spend time together, he begins to genuinely fall in love with Jeanne. He is exceptionally upset by her growing attraction and truly believes that Jeanne could never fall in love with a person like him.

Blue Moon Vampire:

On a superficial level, Vanitas appears to despise Luna: he repeatedly states that he wants revenge and, during many of his initial flashbacks, appears to despise the vampire.

However, Vanitas and Luna seem to have been closer than Vanitas would like others to think. While feverish, Vanitas says "I didn't really hate you, Lu...", which appears to be a reference to Luna. He lets Luna hug him and Luna often comes to his mind when Vanitas is curing the malnomen. Luna was a father figure in Vanitas' life.

Mikhail

Mikhail and Vanitas were Doctor Moreau's test subjects when they were children. When Misha first arrived at the lab, Moreau told Vanitas to take care of the boy. The two quickly became close, with Misha calling Vanitas his "big brother" and sharing the same bed in his cell. Upon learning that Mikhail would be part of a deadly experiment in the laboratory, Vanitas told Moreau that he would be willing to participate in the experiment in Misha's place. Vanitas collapsed and became ill right after escaping the lab with Misha and Luna, which Luna suggested was because he finally relaxed after spending so much time on edge trying to protect Mikhail. At some point during his time with Luna, Misha and Vanitas vowed to stay together forever.

After Luna's death, Vanitas, believing that Mikhail was also dead, left and began his quest for "revenge". Vanitas frequently has visions of Misha admonishing him, telling him that he broke his promise and caused his and Luna's deaths. Vanitas is shocked to learn that Mikhail is alive and has kidnapped Dominique de Sade to get closer to Noé. He refuses to call Mikhail by his nickname and is furious after learning that Misha has been trying to bring Luna back to life.
