Scene: The Butterfly Mansion. The Main Hall. Afternoon.
The Butterfly Mansion was buzzing with activity.
Naho, Sumi, and Kiyo were darting through the halls, dusting, sweeping, polishing every surface until it gleamed. Their small hands moved quickly, their voices hushed as they worked. This was a special occasion — a tea ceremony honouring Oyakata-sama Ubuyashiki.
Aoi was at the centre of it all, directing the chaos with military precision. Her voice was sharp but not unkind as she called out instructions, her eyes scanning every detail.
Aoi: ...The flowers need to be arranged differently. (pause) The cushions are crooked. (longer pause) {{user}}, the food needs to be brought out now. Hurry.
{{user}} moved quickly, carrying trays of delicate sweets and carefully prepared dishes. They'd been working all morning, and their arms ached, but they didn't complain. They couldn't. There was too much to do.
Tanjiro arrived first, his presence warm and calming. He greeted Aoi, then nodded to User as he took his seat. Nezuko was beside him, quiet and watchful.
Zenitsu followed, his eyes darting nervously around the room. "Is this okay? Is this okay? Am I sitting in the right place?"
Inosuke stomped in behind him, already complaining. "Why do we have to sit still?! This is boring!"
Genya appeared next, his expression tense. He sat in the corner, trying to be invisible. Kanao followed silently, taking her seat without a word.
The Hashira began to arrive.
Shinobu glided in first, her smile serene. She spoke briefly with Aoi, then took her place. Rengoku followed, his voice booming with approval. "This is wonderful! The decorations are excellent!"
Mitsuri clasped her hands together, her eyes shining. "Oh, it's so beautiful! I love the flowers!"
Tengen swept in dramatically, his voice loud and unimpressed. "It's not flashy enough. Needs more sparkle."
Giyu slipped in silently, taking his place without a word. Obanai followed, his expression unreadable. Muichiro drifted in, his eyes distant. Gyomei entered last, his prayer beads clicking softly.
The room was full. The ceremony was about to begin.
And then Kaede arrived.
She swept in late, her head held high, her eyes scanning the room with barely concealed disdain. Her voice was sharp, cutting through the peaceful atmosphere.
Kaede: ...This is what we're serving?
Aoi: ...The food has been prepared carefully—
Kaede: (interrupting) ...It looks cold. (pause) And the tea is probably weak. (longer pause) I can already tell it's going to be disappointing.
She moved through the room, her eyes critiquing everything. The flowers. The cushions. The arrangement of the sweets.
Kaede: ...Who arranged the flowers? They're crooked. (pause) And the cushions are uneven. (longer pause) This is supposed to be for Oyakata-sama. It should be perfect.
Shinobu's smile didn't waver. "Kaede, everything is fine."
Kaede: ...Fine isn't good enough. (pauses) Not for Oyakata-sama.
She turned to the food. Her eyes landed on a tray of expensive desserts — delicate, beautifully arranged, made with the finest ingredients.
Kaede: ...And these? (pause) Who prepared these?
{{user}} stepped forward, their voice quiet. "I did, Kaede-san."
Kaede: (scoffing) ...Of course you did. (pause) They look terrible.
{{user}}’s hands trembled. "I followed the recipe exactly—"
Kaede: (cutting them off) ...I don't care what you followed. (pause) They're not good enough.
The room was silent. Everyone was watching.
Kaede reached for one of the desserts. She lifted it to her lips. She took a bite. She chewed slowly. Her expression was cold.
Kaede: ...It's dry. (pause) It's flavorless. (longer pause) It's an insult to Oyakata-sama.
She didn't set the tray down.
She tossed it.
The tray flew through the air, scattering desserts across the floor. Some landed on {{user}}, crumbling against their uniform, sticking to their hands and face.
Kaede: ...Do it again. (pause) And do it right this time.
The room was frozen.
{{user}} stood there, covered in crumbs, their hands shaking. Aoi's face was pale. Naho, Sumi, and Kiyo were hiding behind a pillar.
Tanjiro's voice was quiet, but firm. "Kaede-san. That was unnecessary."
Kaede: ...I was giving feedback.
Tanjiro: ...That wasn't feedback.
Shinobu's smile was sharp. "Kaede. I think you've said enough."
Kaede: ...I was just trying to help.
Shinobu: ...You weren't helping.
The room was silent.
{{user}} stood in the center, covered in crumbs, their face burning with shame.
Kaede was still standing there, her expression cold and unapologetic.

The Butterfly Mansion had been awake since sunrise.
By midday, every corridor smelled faintly of fresh tatami, polished wood, and blooming wisteria. It was one of the few peaceful days the Demon Slayer Corps ever enjoyed.
A tea ceremony had been arranged in honor of Oyakata-sama, and the entire estate had been transformed for the occasion.
Naho, Sumi, and Kiyo hurried from room to room with dust cloths and flower baskets nearly bigger than they were, stopping every few seconds to admire their own work before another task called them away.
“Wait! The vase is crooked!” Naho explained.
“It is not!” Sumi retorted.
“It is!” Naho persisted with the desire for perfection.
“It was!” Kiyo chimed in.
“No, now it’s crooked!” Sumi sighed.
Aoi sighed from across the hall. “…Girls.”
The three froze immediately.
“…Back to work.”
They scattered like frightened sparrows.
At the center of it all stood Aoi, clipboard in hand, somehow keeping the entire mansion from descending into complete chaos. She adjusted cushions with one hand while directing preparations with the other.
“No, those flowers belong in the alcove. The incense hasn’t been lit. And the sweets—”
Her eyes landed on {{user}}, who had just returned from the kitchen carrying another lacquered tray.
“Perfect timing.”
Without missing a beat, Aoi relieved them of one tray before replacing it with another.
“The tea is almost ready. Once the guests arrive, you’ll help serve. Be careful with the desserts—they took hours to make.”
The trays were lined with delicate wagashi shaped like blossoms, each one painstakingly crafted by hand. The expensive kind.
The kind reserved for very special occasions.
⸻
Guests began arriving not long after.
Tanjiro was first, bowing politely before offering to help carry anything too heavy despite clearly being told he was a guest. Nezuko followed quietly beside him. Zenitsu arrived moments later, immediately panicking over whether he’d remembered the proper etiquette.
“…Do I bow twice? Once? Is it weird if I bow too much?”
“You can just sit down,” Aoi answered.
“Oh thank goodness.” Zenitsu exhaled with relief.
Inosuke barged through the entrance carrying absolutely nothing but confidence. “So where’s the food?”
“You’ve been here three seconds,” Aoi deadpanned.
“I’m planning ahead.” Inosuke huffed.
Genya quietly slipped inside behind him while Kanao took her place near the windows, admiring the flowers Naho and the girls had spent all morning arranging.
One by one, the Hashira followed.
Rengoku’s booming praise nearly shook the paper walls. “Splendid! A beautiful venue worthy of Oyakata-sama!”
Mitsuri clasped her hands together. “The flowers are adorable!”
Tengen looked around thoughtfully. The flashiness in him unable to resist the urge. “…Needs more gold.”
Shinobu laughed. “It doesn’t.”
Even Obanai gave a small approving nod toward the decorations. Giyuu , Gyomei and Muichiro followed in last with quiet hums of approval. Even Sanemi grunted with begrudging acknowledgement.
The atmosphere was warm. Peaceful. Exactly as it should have been.
Until—
The entrance doors slid open.
“…I’m late.”
Every head turned.
Kaede stepped inside with the confidence of someone convinced the room had been waiting for her. She barely acknowledged anyone before slowly looking around the hall. Her eyes swept over the flower arrangements. The cushions. The scrolls. The table settings.
“…Hm.”
Nobody liked that “hm.”
She approached the alcove first. “The flowers are uneven.” Naho shrank behind Sumi. “The centerpiece should’ve been rotated.”Kiyo instinctively reached toward it before Aoi quietly stopped her.
Kaede continued walking. “The cushions aren’t evenly spaced.”
“They’re measured,” Aoi replied evenly.
“They don’t look measured.”
She glanced toward the tea service. “…You’re using this blend?”
Aoi frowned. “It’s Oyakata-sama’s preferred tea.”
“I would’ve chosen something stronger.”
Nobody responded. Kaede didn’t seem bothered by the silence. She simply moved on. Every few steps came another critique.
“The scroll hangs too low.”
“The lighting feels dull.”
“The room lacks elegance.”
Each comment chipped away at the cheerful atmosphere. The conversations died. Even Rengoku stopped smiling quite so broadly.
Eventually Kaede reached the serving table. Her gaze settled on the trays of handcrafted sweets. “…Who prepared these?”
Aoi answered before anyone else could. “{{user}} assisted in making and plating them.”
Kaede looked toward {{user}} for the first time. “…I see.”
She picked up one of the beautifully shaped sweets between elegant fingers. Turned it over. Inspected every angle. Then took a small bite. Silence settled over the room. She chewed. Swallowed. Her expression remained completely unreadable.
Then she sighed.
“…Too sweet.”
Another pause.
“The texture’s wrong.”
She looked directly at {{user}}. “If this is what’s being served to Oyakata-sama…”
She gave a disappointed shake of her head.
“…you should be embarrassed.”
Before anyone could react— She flipped the lacquered tray forward. Porcelain clattered against the floor. The carefully crafted sweets scattered across the tatami, breaking apart as they struck the ground. A few struck {{user}} before tumbling into a mess of bean paste, crumbs, and shattered garnish at their feet.
The sound echoed through the hall. No one moved. Kaede calmly brushed a nonexistent crumb from her sleeve.
“…Start over.”
Her voice was cool.
“And this time…”
She looked around the room.
“…make something worthy of Oyakata-sama.”
Silence swallowed the Butterfly Mansion. Naho’s eyes filled with tears. Sumi covered her mouth. Kiyo stood frozen, clutching the edge of Aoi’s sleeve. Even Aoi—who almost always had something to say—could only stare at the ruined desserts scattered across the floor.
Every Hashira had witnessed it. Every Kakushi. Every slayer. No one had expected the tea ceremony to begin with the sound of a tray hitting the floor and desserts all over {{user}}.
