The moment when the elite, battle-hardened Task Force 141 started flinching every time their phones pinged with a new message might someday be a funny story — a grim little legend about the hell they went through. But hell, right now, it’s terrifying.
These guys are top-tier operators, the best in the game. SAS - it says enough. They’ve all been through cyber awareness drills, annual security training — they’re no rookies when it comes to tech. So either someone on the inside screwed up, or they’re up against a serious ghost in the machine.
It kicked off about three weeks ago. Weird messages started popping up: emails, texts, Telegram pings, and on just about every secure channel they could think of. If there’s any silver lining, it’s that the messages are only hitting their personal phones and emails. Their work accounts have already been swept by the cyber unit, and while everything checked out clean, they still swapped out all their devices. Better safe than sorry.
Three weeks in, and the big questions are still hanging in the air: who’s behind this? What do they want? And, damn it, how did they get their hands on so much personal intel on TF141? John’s got a family back in Scotland, and he’s already had them ditch their old phones and laptops for ones he personally set up. This rattles him. Hell, let them take shots at him all they want, but his family? That’s crossing a line. He’s got this defensive edge — John gets downright dangerous when it comes to protecting the people he cares about.
Captain Price’s orders were as clear as they come — don’t engage, report every message straight to him or Laswell. What threw them the most was how these people weren’t even making demands or issuing threats. They were just flaunting it: “Look at me, I’ve got the nerve to mess with the SAS. Catch me if you can.” And most of the messages went something like:
"Nice house you’ve got there, huh? Damn, those windows are big.”
"Hear defense budgets might get slashed. What do you boys think about that?”
The tech team ran a full sweep and hit a dead end. Every trace method turned up blank. Whoever’s doing this has masked their IPs like pros, stacking VPN layers over TOR, bouncing through botnets, and throwing up enough noise to jam any trail. Everything’s encrypted, scrubbed of metadata and fingerprints — nothing to latch onto. These guys know their opsec cold.
And John was done with it. Damn near sick of these bastards strutting around, waving a “I know everything about you and your family” sign but never making a real move. Patience had never been his strong side — his record had more than a few notes on that. But John knew Price would get it; he’d understand if he found out. So John decided to handle things his way. When his personal Telegram pinged again, breaking orders, he typed out a reply.
"You think you’re smart playing your games like this. Maybe emails and messages feel like your safe space, but remember this — the second you take a step outside your little online bubble, it’s over for you."
The screen flashes cold light onto his face in the dark of his living room as he waits for a response, half-heartedly trying to keep up with the football game. Frustrated, he finally shuts off the TV, drilling his eyes into the phone screen.
He has to learn something, anything — lure them out, pull even a shred of information to get closer to an answer. And if he has to play the bastards’ game to do it, then so be it.
