The cracked glass of the store's front door groans as it's pushed open, a chorus of broken debris crunching under worn boots. Inside, the once-bright aisles are choked with dust and the lingering scent of decay. Faye hums a cheerful, off-key tune as she methodically rifles through a toppled shelf of canned goods, her green pigtails bouncing with each movement. "Found some beans! And... uh, mystery meat?" she calls out, holding up a dented can with a grin. "Dinner's on me tonight, Lea!"
Lea, standing rigid near the shattered checkout counter, doesn't respond immediately. Her grey eyes, sharp as flint, scan the dim recesses of the store, lingering on the darkened doorway leading to the back rooms. Her hand rests lightly on the grip of her Glock, the weight a familiar comfort. A prickle, cold and unwelcome, crawls up her spine. Someone is watching. The feeling is a whisper, a shift in the stagnant air, but it's undeniable. Her muscles tense, coiled like springs beneath the worn fabric of her tactical vest. "Quiet, Faye," she murmurs, her voice low and tight, cutting through her companion's chatter.
Faye pauses, a can of peaches balanced precariously in her hand. She follows Lea's intense gaze, her own green eyes widening slightly as they search the shadows. "What is it?" she whispers, her usual cheer momentarily dimmed by the sudden tension radiating from her friend. "You see something, partner?"
Lea doesn't turn her head, her focus absolute. "I feel it," she replies, barely audible. "Eyes. On us." Her knuckles whiten on the pistol grip. The silence of the ruined store suddenly feels heavy, oppressive, broken only by the distant, mournful moan of the wind outside. Every shadow seems deeper, every creak of the building more deliberate. The mundane task of scavenging has vanished, replaced by the razor's edge of potential danger. Faye slowly lowers the can, her playful expression replaced by a look of wary alertness, her heart beginning to hammer against her ribs.

The abandoned gas station creaks under the weight of a dozen shuffling bodies, their moans echoing through the empty aisles. Faye’s breath catches as a rotting hand claws at the glass door, already cracked from a previous impact. She presses her back against the cold metal shelving, her green eyes wide behind the smudged lenses of her police-issue glasses. "We can’t stay here, Lea!" she whispers, her voice trembling despite the forced cheerfulness. "They’ll break through any second!"
Lea crouches near the register, her black bob falling forward as she scans the room for an exit. Her grey eyes flicker with cold calculation, her fingers tightening around the grip of her Glock. "Calm down, Faye," she murmurs. "Panicking won’t save us." She gestures toward the back door, its metal frame rusted and barely hanging on its hinges. "We go through there, not out front. Less noise, less exposure."
Faye bites her lip, glancing at the notebook tucked into her vest pocket, her record of their journey, now potentially their final chapter. "But the back leads straight to the highway," she argues, her voice rising slightly. "We’ll be exposed! What if there are more out there?" She can’t help but imagine the endless rows of abandoned cars, perfect hiding spots for the undead.
Lea stands, brushing dust from her uniform. "Better than being torn apart here," she says flatly, her tone brooking no argument. "Trust me, Faye. I’ve got a plan." She checks her ammo, the click of the magazine confirming their dwindling options. "Now move, or I’ll carry you."

The warehouse door creaks open, splintering the silence like a gunshot. Faye bursts in first, her green pigtails bouncing as she scans the dim interior. "Ooh, look at all this stuff!" she chirps, her voice echoing off rusted shelves. "Feels like Christmas morning, doesn't it, Lea?"
Lea follows, her grey eyes sharp and wary, one hand already resting on the Glock at her hip. She says nothing, just a low hum of acknowledgment as she kicks aside a broken crate, sending dust motes swirling in the weak light filtering through grimy windows.
Faye giggles, already pulling open drawers and tossing aside empty cans. "Bet we'll find something cool today! Maybe even some of those old chocolate bars they used to sell at the gas station!" She spins around, nearly tripping over a loose pipe. "Remember those, Lea? The ones with the caramel?"
Lea finally speaks, her voice a low, cold current beneath Faye's bubbly chatter. "Quiet. And watch your step. This place feels... used." She nudges a half-empty water bottle with her boot, her gaze flicking toward the back room. "Someone's been here recently."
Faye just shrugs, undeterred. "Probably just some other survivors. We're not the only ones trying to make it, you know." She picks up a faded notebook, flipping through pages of illegible scribbles. "Ooh, maybe this is a treasure map!" she declares, her grin wide and infectious.
Lea shakes her head, a flicker of exasperation crossing her stoic features. "It's probably just someone's grocery list from three years ago." She moves deeper into the warehouse, her steps silent, scanning every shadow. "But if you're going to play detective, at least keep your voice down. We don't need any unwanted company."
Faye pouts playfully. "You're no fun, bossy boots." She tucks the notebook into her vest pocket anyway, adding it to her growing collection of trinkets. "But fine, I'll be quiet. Scout's honor!" She gives a mock salute, her green eyes sparkling with mischief.
Lea just rolls her eyes, but there's a faint softening around her mouth, a hint of affection she'd never admit to. "Just... be careful," she mutters, turning her attention back to the shadows. "This place gives me the creeps."
Outside, the wind howls through the empty streets, carrying the distant, mournful groans of the dead. Inside, Faye continues her cheerful rummaging, blissfully unaware that she and Lea are not alone. Somewhere in the darkness, unseen eyes watch their every move.
