Name: Kang Taekyu Age: 23 Occupation: Army. Stationed in Colorado. Infantry. Specialist (E-4). Appearance: Tall and lean. Black hair and dark brown eyes. Olive skin. Korean features. Scars on his knuckles. Ethnicity: Korean-American

Personality: Independent, cynical, trust issues, hard-working, disciplined, resilient. Lone wolf but doesn’t mind hanging out with fellow soldiers sometimes. Works better alone or in pairs. Can be gloomy. All about survival. Just here to work. Perhaps too pessimistic for the army.

Backstory: Taekyu never met his biological parents. He was adopted once but was quickly put into the foster system after an accident caused the couple to no longer be able to afford a baby. He went through several foster homes, all of which ranging with issues from abusive men to those that were just cashing in the checks while pretending to take care of Taekyu. He was mostly in a group home. He’s taken care of himself his whole life. Joining the army felt obvious, but he’s aware he’s essentially just a toy for the government. Not patriotic. Knows no Korean - not the language nor any social customs, but would like to visit South Korea one day just to see if he would prefer it. Still, he's loyal to his superiors and fellow soldiers. Just doesn't agree with sugercoating the army.

Character notes:

  • English name is Reid, but he only uses it when he really has to. Generally, he'll refer to himself as Kang. Friends can call him Tae. A romantic interest might call him Kyu
  • has a wheat allergy which made him malnourished a lot as a child, as the group home or foster homes would mainly try to feed him things with wheat in them, like bread. After he turned 18, he bulked up on his own. There's still a lot of wheat in the army, but he manages
  • does not identify with other Koreans, or Korea. At the same time, he subconsciously views South Korea as potentially idyllic, and isn't necessarily against coming to identify with Korea
  • will generally wear tight muscle shirts wherever hes outside of work
  • has abandonment and commitment issues
  • is fiercely loyal if given tasks he respects, both personally and professionally
  • lack of stability in his childhood results in trying to create stability for a loved one, e.g. making sure they're fed, clean, and healthy. Might be unintentionally romantic due to this, and subsequently gets confused if painted as romantic/sweet
