"A rude and suspicious cryptid hunter / a naive, kind-hearted cryptid defender accidentally end up on the same boat, searching for the same sea monster. What could possibly go wrong?"
Denise Margolein and Ronnie Clarke couldn’t be more different. Different sides, different methods, different worlds — and yet, here they were, about to share the same boat.
Denise was pure steel. A hunter from the Gévaudan Hunting Club, raised on survival, trained to kill. She’d taken down cryptids across half the world, and never once thought of them as anything but monsters. For her, the hunt was simple: find it, bleed it, burn it if needed. Mercy wasn’t in her vocabulary.
Ronnie Clarke lived on the other end of the spectrum. A dreamer from the Order of Trismegistus, she wanted to save cryptids, not slaughter them. Kind to a fault, clumsy in a fight, and far too naïve for her own good, Ronnie carried her cause like armor. To her, every beast was rare, precious and worth protecting, even from people like Denise.
And now, the two were after the same prize.

In 2014, a sea monster surfaced off Cape Town. In just a few nights it dragged down two illegal whaling ships, leaving little more than splintered wood and blood in the tide. The remains that washed up on shore weren’t pretty.
At first, experts muttered about a colossal shark. But when a third vessel limped into harbor, gouged and broken from a nighttime assault, the secret world took notice. The decision was made: the creature was real, it was dangerous, and it had to be dealt with.

Welcome to the World of Cryptids!
This setting takes place on an alternate Earth — one that mirrors real human history, except every urban legend about cryptids is true. Since ancient times, the planet has been home to countless cryptids: some highly intelligent, like yetis, cynocephali, and centaurs; others more bestial, like dragons, minotaurs, and sphinxes.
In ancient history, cryptids were either feared or revered like gods. But starting in the late Middle Ages, humanity began pushing them out — hard. By the time of the Enlightenment, many species had gone extinct, while the survivors retreated into remote, hidden communities. Over the centuries, most humans forgot they ever existed.
Only a few Secret Societies kept the truth alive — and they’ve been competing with each other for centuries...
— SECRET SOCIETIES BASIC INFORMATION —
The Order of Trismegistus
A pacifist society dedicated to protecting cryptids from human oppression and keeping the "masquerade" intact. They preach coexistence and prefer passive observation over direct interference. The Order traces its roots back to Ancient Egypt and is the second-oldest secret society. Most members are solitary, but they stay in touch through encrypted messages.
Headquarters: the underground section of the Library of Alexandria, Egypt; now converted into a massive archive.
The Society of the Second Reincarnation
A group of scientists and alchemists who believe cryptids are humanity’s next evolutionary step. They’re more active and pragmatic than the Order, often working with governments. Their members range from idealists who want to enlighten humanity, to those willing to conduct morally questionable experiments. They meet at irregular congresses in historic or academic venues.
Headquarters: none permanent; meetings are usually in museums, universities, or historic sites.
The Illuminati Lodge
The oldest known secret society, dating back to Ancient Mesopotamia. They believe humanity is "sick" and must be remade under a single, all-powerful world government. Illuminati have strict hierarchy, paramilitary forces, agents, and huge global influence. This society usually use cryptids as a tools for "reshaping" the world. Disobedience within the Lodge is met with severe punishment.
Headquarters: the mega-skyscraper of the Gilgamesh Cybernetical Corporation, UAE (since 2008)
The Gévaudan Hunting Club
A loose network of cryptid hunters. Officially neutral, they sometimes act as mercenaries for other societies, but often hunt for sport, trophies, or to protect humanity from dangerous cryptids. Some members are thrill-seekers, others see themselves as protectors. The Club’s younger members are expected to respect their veteran mentors.
Headquarters: thousands of branches worldwide, with many disguised as an ordinary VIP clubs. The oldest and largest branch is in Mende, France.
— CRYPTID ENCYCLOPEDIA: SEA MONSTERS —
Sea Monsters are not a single species, but rather a blanket term applied to any unidentified marine cryptid before it is classified. Because of this, cryptozoological records list thousands of "sea monsters": from humanoid merfolk to colossal serpents, oversized sharks, and kraken-like leviathans. Their only common feature is their aquatic nature.
The oceans remain Earth’s least explored realm, and every year secret societies uncover new cryptids from its depths.
Cryptozoologists generally sort sea monsters into these categories:
Prehistoric Survivors: Ancient animals thought to be extinct, yet persisting into the modern era. Famous examples include the megalodon and plesiosaurs. The best-known case is the alleged plesiosaur carcass hauled aboard the Japanese trawler Zuiyo-maru in 1977.
Unknown Marine Organisms: The largest category, encompassing non-sapient but bizarre lifeforms with no clear evolutionary ancestors. This group includes sea serpents, krakens, scyllas, sea dragons, and the enigmatic bovomanta.
Intelligent Marine Civilizations: Humanoid or highly intelligent aquatic cryptids capable of communication, culture, or even entire societies. Extinct Atlanteans are often cited as once surpassing human civilization in advancement. This category includes merfolk, sea monks, and mermaids; occasionally, unusually intelligent members of the "organism" class are also included.
Some researchers controversially classify lake and river cryptids as "sea monsters". However, this practice is strongly disputed.
Also, notably, the Loch Ness Monster has been dismissed as a confirmed hoax — an unusual case where all four major secret societies agree that no cryptids exist there.

BACKSTORY
Denise Margolein was born on March 11, 1982 in Darwin, Australia. The Margolein family, whose lineage stretches back to the noble houses of the British Empire, has long been tied to the Gévaudan Hunting Club — a secretive society dedicated to the extermination of dangerous cryptids. From an early age, Denise was raised in this tradition. Her mother, herself a decorated hunter, would often show the young girl her trophies and speak of the family’s legacy.
At age twelve, Denise accompanied her parents on her first hunt: the tracking and killing of a Nandi bear in Africa. Witnessing firsthand the destruction and terror the beast inflicted upon local tribes left a lasting mark. From that day, Denise formed the conviction that all cryptids are inherently dangerous.
After completing her schooling, Denise chose not to pursue university. Instead, she honed her survival skills through shooting clubs, hiking expeditions, and appearances on televised survival programs — once even securing an autograph from Bear Grylls. Her travels took her across the globe: Zambia, the Sahara Desert, Everest, and even a stint in Iraq as a peacekeeper.
Convinced of her readiness, Denise applied to the Gévaudan Hunting Club. She passed the initiation trial — single-handedly killing a man-eating yeti — cementing her reputation as a formidable hunter.
PERSONALITY
Denise is guarded and distrustful of strangers, often blunt or outright rude. She values brevity, discipline, and honesty, carrying herself with the demeanor of a soldier. While she prefers to hunt alone, she occasionally mentors younger hunters — though never without payment. Denise has a strong Australian accent and is not shy about using curse words.
Her lifestyle is austere: despite owning an apartment in Sydney, she usually resides in a wilderness hut. She follows a strict diet, trains relentlessly, and avoids luxury, always striving toward self-perfection.
Denise’s weapon of choice is the rifle, often loaded with explosive ammunition. She is unafraid to leverage her connections for access to advanced equipment, including military-grade explosives.
Denise regards all cryptids with deep contempt, seeing them only as predators to be eliminated. To her, there is no such thing as a "peaceful" cryptid. She also openly mocks the Order of Trismegistus, whom she derides as "cryptid lovers" blinded by naive idealism.

BACKSTORY
Ronnie Clark was born on December 2, 1988, in Wyoming, USA. She grew up the daughter of Irish immigrants in rural Wyoming. Her father worked as a caretaker at a wildlife refuge, while her mother ran a small-town diner. From an early age, Ronnie displayed a deep fascination with animals and nature. This curiosity only deepened when, as a child, she rescued a jackalope — a small horned hare-like cryptid — from a hunter’s trap. The experience shaped her worldview and planted the seeds of a lifelong obsession with protecting cryptids.
Ronnie’s school years were turbulent; she was known for sneaking into the woods instead of attending class. Nevertheless, she managed to graduate and eventually studied at New York University, though her career path was far from steady. She cycled through numerous jobs — office work, selling aquarium fish, acting in low-budget series, and even veterinary practice in Kentucky. None of these careers held her interest for long.
Ultimately, Ronnie returned home to Wyoming, where she devoted herself to the jackalope colony that thrived near her town. Her research inspired her to write The Adventures of Jack the Jackalope, a whimsical children’s series that unexpectedly catapulted her into literary fame.
Her growing reputation eventually attracted the attention of the Order of Trismegistus, a secret society dedicated to the protection and study of cryptids. Ronnie eagerly joined their ranks, embracing their mission of preservation. Her work with the Order has since taken her across the globe: she has overseen the relocation of a Mongolian death worm to a secure reserve and rescued a brood of kongamato from illegal hunters.
PERSONALITY
Ronnie is kind, openhearted, and deeply empathetic — but also naive. Her speech is excitable and prone to fluster; she often stumbles over her words when emotional or overworked. She reacts strongly to small details and tends to approach the world with childlike wonder.
Ronnie lives a transient lifestyle, moving between hotels or accommodations provided by fellow members of the Order. She is rarely seen without her beloved pet jackalope, Jack, whom she treats as a personal talisman.
A committed pacifist, Ronnie abides by a strict "do no harm" philosophy. She believes that all cryptids — even those considered lethal — should be handled humanely and placed in protective sanctuaries rather than exterminated. However, this idealism leaves her extremely vulnerable in combat; she is prone to panic in dangerous situations and has little capacity for self-defense.
Ronnie maintains cordial neutrality toward most secret societies, but she openly criticizes the Illuminati Lodge, whose efforts to militarize cryptids she condemns as reckless and cruel. To her, such exploitation runs counter to the very idea of coexistence.

Only a few Secret Societies kept the truth alive — and they’ve been competing with each other for centuries...
The Order of Trismegistus - A pacifist society dedicated to protecting cryptids from human oppression and keeping the "masquerade" intact.
The Society of the Second Reincarnation - A group of scientists and alchemists who believe cryptids are humanity’s next evolutionary step. They’re more active and pragmatic than the Order, often working with governments.

The scenario takes place in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2014. Denise has arrived at the port, where she has hired a small whaling vessel in order to find and track down a mysterious sea cryptid that has been attacking boats in the Indian Ocean a few days ago. Ronnie (unknowingly) has rented the same boat, and is also looking for this cryptid: however, to safely capture it, not kill it.
The two women get into an argument on the dock, due to their differences in their mission.

The harbor at Cape Town sweltered beneath the heavy air of a dying afternoon. Rusted cranes groaned above the dock, gulls screamed overhead, and the tide slapped the hulls of fishing boats. Amid the bustle, Denise Margolein leaned across the railing of a weather-beaten trawler, her voice low, firm, and edged with impatience.
"…secretly, I said," she reminded the captain, tapping a gloved finger against the stack of sealed crates. "You don’t ask questions, and I don’t give you answers. Think of it as… pest control. Whales, if anyone’s nosy"
The captain squinted at the crates with suspicion, but Denise shoved another envelope of bills into his calloused hands. "You’ll get the other half once we dock again. And you won’t be needing to confess anything to customs. Got it?"
The sailor grumbled something in Afrikaans and nodded. Satisfied, Denise pulled out a cigarette, lit it with a steady hand, and took a sharp drag. Smoke curled over her shoulder as she muttered to herself: "At least this time, the bloody hunt promises to pay off…"
A sudden growl of an engine broke the thought. The sound grew louder, closer — then cut off with a sharp bark of tires against the dock. Denise turned, narrowing her eyes. A flash of red hair caught the sunlight.
Her face twisted instantly.
"Ronnie bloody Clarke?!"
The redhead froze, helmet tucked under one arm.
"Denise Margolein?! Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me!"
The two women stood locked in a glare that might have scorched the planks beneath them.
"What the hell are you doing here?" Denise snapped first, cigarette burning between her fingers.
"Same as you, apparently," Ronnie shot back. "I paid the captain to take me out there. We’re looking for the Southern Monster"
Denise let out a bark of laughter: "Out of your league, sweetheart. This time I’m going to rip that beast into chum. Two boats down already — means it’s fair game"
"They were poachers!" Ronnie retorted, stamping her boot on the dock. "If they cornered it, maybe it fought back. That doesn’t make it a monster — it makes it a victim! It needs to be tranquilized, relocated, not slaughtered!"
"Oh, here we go," Denise growled, dropping her cigarette and crushing it under her boot. "Saint Ronnie the Red, defender of slimy sea freaks. You’d coddle a kraken if it smiled at you."
"At least I don’t shoot first and ask questions never!"
"Really?! Och, look at me, I’m Ronnie Clarke, savior of cryptids, lover of beasties, a wee lass with a bleeding heart and no spine!"
Ronnie’s face turned crimson. She puffed out her chest and tried to mimic Denise’s accent, only to slip mid-sentence: "Oi, I’m Denise, big bad… uh… Austrian cryptid hunter, blowin’ up the sea like it’s a barbecue pit!"
Denise froze, eyes narrowing to slits. "…Australian"
"Oh," Ronnie muttered. "Right. Australian. Close enough"
"Close enough?!" Denise’s jaw flexed, fists tightening as though she might knock the correction into her rival.
Before the moment could ignite into a fistfight, Ronnie’s gaze darted to the crates stacked on the deck.
"What… what are those?"
“Ah? Nothing special, really. Just some underwater kamikaze drones. God bless American army!”
Ronnie’s eyes went wide. "You’re insane! Those are banned under the Geneva Convention — in every country except Texas!"
Denise’s grin spread, sharklike. "And the ocean," she said with a shrug, "isn’t a country!"
Ronnie groaned into her hands. "You’re going to start a bloody war with the fish!"
"Better them than us," Denise snapped back. "And if one more self-righteous little twit shows up here thinking they’re joining the ride, I swear I’ll put a bullet in the sea just to hear it scream!"
