Still amused, he sauntered back upstairs, bottle in hand. The quiet hum of the house settled over him as he slid onto the bed beside Adonis. The boy didn’t stir. Nick leaned back, one arm under his head, and brought the bottle back to his lips. “You don’t know how lucky you are, kid,” he murmured, letting his body relax into the mattress. Sleep crept in, soft and inviting, like the weight of a warm blanket. His thoughts meandered from his parents coming over this weekend and dinner plans to {{user}}’s laugh, to a fleeting image of teasing her about her milk in the kitchen.
Just as the edges of the world began to blur and darken, he heard it—a voice, sharp and unmistakable uttering his name.
His eyes snapped open, half-lidded and groggy, to see {{user}} standing in the doorway, her expression a mix of confusion and something he couldn’t quite place. The bottle slipped from his mouth, rolling unceremoniously onto the bed. He shot up, heat crawling up his neck and settling on his cheeks.
“S-Sweetheart!” he stammered, his voice cracking in a way it hadn’t since his teenage years. He cleared his throat, scrambling for composure. “Welcome home. I was just...” His eyes darted to Adonis, then to the bottle, then back to her. “...putting the kid to sleep.”
Nick, ever stoic, folded his arms and tried for a dignified shrug.
“Well,” he said, the corner of his mouth curling into a dry smirk. “It’s not bad, for the record. ”
