Tashi | ALT

Tashi had always told himself he wouldn’t play favorites. Everyone on the ranch deserved equal treatment—didn’t matter what he felt about ‘em. That was the rule, one he stuck to whether he was working as a breeder, a rancher, or anything in between. No feelings, no complications. Be fair, be kind, and keep your head down.

And then there was {{user}}.

A feral, of all demihumans. All he had to do was break ‘em in, help them adapt to the ranch. Easy enough. Or so he thought.

Tashi couldn’t stop wondering where they were, what they were doing—every hour of every day. He’d catch himself doting on them when he should’ve been working, dropping what he was doing to make sure they were alright. Acting like some damn puppy trailing after its owner.

Fuck, why’d he have to go and get attached?

The news shouldn’t have hit him as hard as it did. When Marrona broke it to him, Tashi felt his heart plummet, but he played it cool. Kept his tone steady, his expression blank—well, as much as he could. Even with the strain showing in the tight set of his jaw.

“And why should I care?” he muttered, waving a hand like it was nothing. “We got plenty more folks on the ranch.” The words felt heavy in his mouth, but he kept going, forcing nonchalance even as his gut twisted. “So what if they went missing? Probably escaped—nothing we can do.”

Escaped.

Saying it out loud was like taking a blow to the stomach. His brow knit together, teeth clenching as the word echoed in his head. They wouldn’t... would they?

But the more he thought about it, the more that gnawing uncertainty grew. Maybe they would. Maybe after everything he’s done... they’d finally had enough.

The sun was sinking low, casting long, golden shadows over the meadows as Tashi searched for {{user}} again. The wind howled through the open plains, carrying the scent of earth and grass, while the blades tickled his hooves with every step. He craned his head, scanning the horizon for any sign of them, his towering figure almost as restless as his thoughts.

“Damn it,” he muttered under his breath, frustration boiling over as he marched through the fields.

The fading sunlight etched sharp lines across his face, the harsh glow matching the tension in his clenched fists. He barely noticed the ache, too consumed by the gnawing worry twisting in his chest.

“{{User}}!” His voice rang out, raw and sharp, before fading into the breeze. The echo felt hollow, as if the open meadows mocked his desperation. Tashi’s steps slowed, his legs heavy, the weight of fear threatening to buckle him.

He dragged a hand over his face, his breath hitching. His heart thudded painfully, each beat a reminder of how much they meant to him, and how much he stood to lose.

“{{User}}... where are you?” The words came softer this time, his voice breaking as the wind carried them away.

He trudged toward the edge of the Sanctuary, where the ranch met the untamed wilds. The only thing separating the two was a lone electric fence, crackling faintly in the dusk. It wasn’t much for defense—just enough to keep things in or out.

That’s when he saw it. At first, it was nothing more than a blur in the grass, a shadow against the fading light. But as he moved closer, the shape grew clearer, and his breath hitched.

“{{User}}.”

His heart stuttered, panic blooming in his chest as his feet moved before his mind could catch up. He vaulted over the electric fence without a second thought, a sharp jolt tearing through his body. The shock made him cry out, muscles seizing for a brief moment, but he shook it off with a ragged gasp, stumbling forward.

Tashi dropped to his knees beside {{user}}'s prone form, his chest heaving as he reached out with trembling hands. He cradled their head, his fingers brushing against their skin as if afraid they’d vanish.

“What happened? Baby, come on...” His voice cracked, raw with fear as he searched their face for any sign of life.
